View Full Version : My new belly pan

This cost me ~£45 new, shipped from Germany. I believe it's a JMV replica. I wasn't expecting much but it arrived in good shape (sturdy, no cracks or chips in the gel-coat) and after figuring out the mounting (pics below) I gave it a quick sand and primered. Hopefully we get a warm/dry enough day this week I can paint it (satin black).

Question for the paint-brains: I'm using Plasti-Kote. I've got the satin in black, but they only do a "regular" clear. If I spray that over the satin, am I going to end up with gloss or something in between?

I'm still working on a bracket to mount the stock gauges - I'd like a trailtech, but it's not in the budget ATM.

Red would look better imo

black pans look good imo on the black framed pointy.

I did think about red, but figured there'd be slim-to-no chance of getting red in a can to match the rest, and also figured it'd highlight my sorely lacking (non-existant) paint skills as well. I might add some red decals (maple leaf?!) to the pan to tie it in a bit though.

go black - and if you get a hugger - make that black too.

Keeps them nice and understated and the bike looks good that way too.

Ha -cool! I wondered if it'd be someone from the board here, and meant to post up a "spotted" just to see, but then I forgot (typical).

Try it on an off cut of steel first. I havent used Plasti-kote sprays but other ones I have used will leave the finish that gets applied last. In your case, the gloss laquer.

They can look good on other bikes too.. Mine is a blue SV, but with black mudguard, belly pan and hugger. Looks good in my opinion.

Well the colour is in my case not worth debating as:

a) I'm cheap and this red doesn't (I think) come in a pre-made can (at least not for £6/can).
b) No chance I'd manage to get a red paint job to look anything less than awful, even if I did find the right shade.
c) I've already sprayed it satin black - just need to give it a final couple of coats and then clear...

Maybe red would look better if done well, but I'm content that black will look good enough to make me happy :)

I have used this in the past and it has worked well - Matt Clear Coat (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1K-CLEARCOAT-MATT-400ML-AEROSOL-CAN-FOR-REFINISHING_W0QQitemZ160336967601QQcmdZViewItemQQp tZLH_DefaultDomain_3?hash=item2554d3f7b1&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14)

I have an identical belly-pan! :)

I did make some minor mods tho, i made a few small holes in the base because rain water has nowhere to go and collects in the pan. do you have the same problem?

I was gonna do mine in black to see what it looks like

Thanks. I try to do my bit every now and again. TBH I prefer a matt black look for the belly pan. I think it looks cheap shiny. Again, everyone to his own.

Nice one Che, I only have my bike, so its all weather riding for me. and on those rainy days before i drilled some holes, the belly-pan would collect water like anything!
I like the red pic, of the two Zunkus made :)

Got a pic of yours? I'd like to see what you did with your brackets as well - I'm happy with mine, but always interested in seeing if there's a better way.

I think that if you do go for the red belly you should also have a touch of red on the headlight 'cause otherwise the front would look weedy

LOL - Last time: I'm definitely not going red - it's already black, and I think I've done a decent job of it as well. :) Just need to spray it with some clear before I mount it. Should be early next week and I'll post up the finished pics (if the weather cooperates).

Finished! Well nearly anyhow -still want to add an SV or suzuki decal in red/silver to kind of tie it in a bit - and a maple leaf as well (representin' yo).

All in all I'm quite happy with the finished result. I'm very pleased with myself for how the paint turned out (first time I've ever tried to do anything with paint). Before I cleared it it was nearly perfect - I didn't do quite as good a job with the clear but you'd have to get pretty close to spot much wrong with it. I think the sheen is as close as possible to what I was hoping for.

Would have preferred it matte, but yeah it does look good. Black suites the naked better I think.

Ahh those aren't bad -you're pretty handy with the tin snips :) I like how you've used a couple of bolts for each of the front ones - my brackets are all just a single strip of bent 2mm steel bar - I'm wondering if they'll rotate, but time will tell I suppose. If so I guess I'll just triangulate one of them as you have.

haha, these are also 2mm steel, found some at work. yea, i wasnt sure if the pan was gonna start moving, so i used 2 bolts on the front, and now it sits rock solid.
