Does anyone fancy a ride to the stunning Elan Valley on the above date? Leaving Shrewsbury services at around 10-10.30. up the A488 to Churchstoke. Across to Newtown, quick drink at Harry Tuffins and then to Newtown. A489 for @ 15 miles and then the superb A470 to Rhayader, Elan valley visitor centre for lunch. After that the route will be decided on the day, probably take the road up the side of the reservoir to where ever it leads. then back to Shrewsbury. I'm planning on this being a relaxed ride for everyone to enjoy the roads and the fantastic scenery, no times (apart from the start) to keep to. the route at the start can be altered if the roads are wet as the A488 can be tricky. In that case we'll take the A458 through welshpool to Newtown. If you haven't been to the Elan Valley before you've missed a treat and this is your chance to see it. :D

Brilliant, as i said from the Elan Valley what happens depends on the weather, but the idea is for an easy paced ride taking in the scenery. Fingers crossed for the weather.

Cannot make this one, as I'm working this weekend.

Funny that I predicted that this would happen while at the Ponderosa with DaveP on the last Wales ride. I only work 1 weekend in 10, and it nearly always seems to be when these are arranged!

Looks like a decent enough turn out already, hopefully some more might find they are free closer to the time. I cleaned my bike up a bit today, rideouts usually shame me into doing it :-)

Am I right in thinking the area is covered by mid wales police or whatever they may be called rather than NWP and if so whats their view on exhausts? I'm guessing not as bad as NWP so I'll take my chances with sensibility on getting an idiot fine.

Mike, Churchstoke is on the 489, newtown to lydham road where it meets the A490 from welshpool. We will be leaving S/bury service no later than 10.30, so should be there by 11.15-11.30. leave there by 12 ish and arrive elan valley visitor centre 1.00- 1.30. Lunch, leave 2-2.30 then up the side of the lakes to the top and then back to rhayader. Down the A44 to crossgates for a brief stop then the A488 through Knighton, Clun, Lydham, Pontesbury. if time allows and people want to we can cut across to my house at Longden for a cuppa. as i said in my first post this should be a scenic, steady ride for people to enjoy, times are guesswork but somewhere near to these. i think a couple of my friends are coming, (2 up) and he hasn't been riding that long or ridden in a group before so the pace will not be manic. lets have fun in good weather.

Given the pace and style of the rideout suiting my ability/preference is it wrong that I'm now pondering IAM at only 28? LOL. Some say I'm old before my time though so perhaps it isn't that far off and I don't need extreme speed to enjoy myself.

Will start another thread in bike talk after I've had a look into it to save derailing this one yet again :)

Slightly more on topic, rideout on a Saturday seemed to work really well as I was knackered by the end of it so had Sunday to recover before being back at work. just my POV perhaps but thought I'd mention it.

It was your pace and style that made me consider it, I saw the sticker on your bike (and it had been mentioned before) definitely considering it. If I get serious about it I'll give you a shout, thanks.

Phil, seemed to me your pace was fine, I suspect you would have easily out paced me on the corners toward the end of the day, I'd gotten distracted and spooked by some gravel and was being too cautious.
When you get your camera give me a shout if you fancy some photo trips, good excuse for a ride and a reason to use the camera.

I tend to arrange some days out with a friend to take specific event or type of picture and it gives you an excuse/reason to use it, plus try out other techniques if its not something you would have thought of etc. very basic stuff though, you may be beyond it but the offer is there.

Following you was suiting me fine, after i had the front end go on me a bit on the gravel at elan valley visitor centre i was paranoid as well.
Better to be paranoid than bin it IMO.

Definitely up for camera trip some time, i know some basics but not much.
I might bring my mate along (pillion) as well if thats ok as he's a lot more experienced than me and he would be up for new surroundings / different shots.

Don't you need to be able to see the obervee in order to observe? :flower:

Guys, don't get to hung up about the gravel, little slides are fairly common on those type of roads. They only get bad if you do something big to counter it and 'over ride' the bike.
