A couple of days ago I had a conversation with a mate regarding tattoos and how people react whilst having them. I have seen people who turn white then throw up, pass out, run ( which was hilarious ), but for the most they just grin and bear it. For me I just don't seem to react other than after half hour sitting there I tend to fall asleep ( even when I was getting my spine area tattooed ). So mighty orgers how did you react when you got your tattoo and do you have any funny stories to tell.

I have a mate you owns his own Tattoo parlour. Whenever he gets someone he knows into the Tattoo parlour it depends on whether he likes them or not as to their reaction.

If it's someone he doesn't like he can tattoo them in such a way he can make them either turn white, throw up or pass out.

On the other hand if he likes them he can make it a relatively pleasant experience.

Always makes me laugh when he has someone we both don't like and he tells me how they reacted. It makes me laugh even more when I speak to the said person who claims it was painless and that they enjoyed it :)

Well I didn't fall asleep, but its not a traunatic experience.

What was especially nice with my 1st one is that it was a rather cute girl doing the work :)

On my first one I went a bit white (despite it being rather small) but on all the others I have found sucking a wurthers sweet stops that. Weirdest one was when I had my thigh done the muscle kept twitching

I've got three but the only one I found particularly sore was the one on my belly which made me cramp my foot....but apart from that...I just sit and let them get on with it and really react in anyway...

Only have the one on my upper right arm, took 3 hours to do, was a bit sore at first but after a while I got a bit sleepy tbh, want to get another one done eventually, just trying to decide what at the minute

I have 7 and the only one that i felt some real pain with was the one on the edge of my pelvic bone...actually made my eyes water!
The others are on my arms, chest and back. Getting a tattoo gives me a an odd sort of high. I can not explain it but love the feel of the needle piercing the skin and the burning? sensation for want of a better word. The one on my chest i did not feel at all in anyway and no i was not drinkin at the time :)

I sit and watch a film:)

I have found that depending where you have it on your body, depends how much it will hurt.
My arms, chest, back and shoulders were fine but my ribs hurt a bit under my arm and in my armpit hurt lots.

Both of mine are on my upper arms and after the initial wince as the needle first made contact, I found myself watching intently. I thought it was fascinating.

When Pete had his tattoo his daughter apparently had to ask the tattooist to stop for a while as she thought he was going to pass out! :D

I swore a bit when I had mine. Same for my two piercings! :D

Reactions will always vary depending on the size of tattoo, the ink being used, and the placement on the body.

Most tattoo places charge additional for the tummy being done due to the amount of nerves there, it can be tricky to do.

See that explains a lot. Everyone told me that the fleshier the area, the less it hurt but my other two, back(over the spine) and wrist didn't hurt that much at all.

Yup normally over bone you will feel a little discomfort and a lot of people will tell you that they feel pain in another place in their body, for example over the shoulder blade it is typical to feel it in your elbow.

It isnt just this though there are factors of peoples own pain thresholds.

I have seen many blokes go white, pass out or throw up having their nipples peirced. It isnt because of their pain threshold being lower it is because they go into the parlour and big themselves up, fill themselves up with adrenaline and then make it worse for themselves. Women tend to go in and talk about how they are scared of the pain and talk about it a bit more hence not such a big deal when it happens.

Ha ha, I didn't pass out but did go very white and sweaty

I was sweating buckets getting my 2nd one done but that was at the top of my arm going onto my soulder. It did hurt on the bone but I think the main reason for the sweating was the air con wasn't working in the tattoo shop in Cyprus.

I fell asleep... The tattooist threw a wobbly, she thought I'd fainted. I've done the same at the dentist. But can I get to sleep in my own bed? No.

First 5mins are painful if I'm honest ,from thereon the hardest bit is holding the position for so long!:smt087

My first was on my backside and it didn't really hurt, it was a touch uncomfortable - a bit like being tickled heavily. When I had my second done on my right shoulder it was painful when she was doing the outline, but the filling in and shading was fairly easy going.

Anna mentioned nipple piercings, mine was over so quick I didn't have time to think about the pain. It was a short sharp sting and then everything setled down quite swiftly afterwards.

I was with my ex holding her hand when she had a VCH piercing done (her very first piercing) and she said it was a most delightful pain, so she went back and had both nipples done, one of them twice in a crucifix pattern. She also has the whole of her back tattooed with a massive Japanese dragon that extends down her right butt cheek and around her right thigh, a half sleeve on the left and a full sleeve on the right.

She's well decorated

The only strange feeling I have had was with the black saw blade design just above my left breast. At the top of the design, I had a sudden warmth spread through my shoulder and into my body and I felt so much peace, it was quite beautiful. Mind you at the time I was struggling with very poor mental health and was using tattooing and piercing as a way of expressing internal pain.

After a few years had passed I had a Faery design by the Artist Jasmine Becket Smith tattooed on my lower back, but this was to celebrate my recovery from major surgery and getting well again.

The most painful thing I have ever had (and those of you that know me well can imagine some of the pain that I have suffered) was a sub surface piercing in the base of my neck. That hurt so much I very nearly fainted. However once it was in place and had started to heal it performed marvellously at what I wanted it to do. However, the chap I was with at the time found it revolting. Sadly it had to come out after it infected and became so painful I could not wear my bike lid. My CBT instructor kept yelling at me to lift my head and he had no idea how painful that was. So a pair of pliers and a quick wince and out it came (along with a load of manky goo!).

It seems that piercings do not heal well for me, but tattoos heal very fast, so once I can afford it, I want more tattoos up my back, more faeries and maybe my cats too.

I've always wanted a tatto of some sort, but really don't know what to get- and unless I get something that really says something about me, rather than the standard celtic designs or an anchor with 'mum' written across it, I doubt I'll do it.

Cheesy as it is, I'd like a yin/yang somewhere- I like what it symbolises... Or maybe the tiger/crane design from my kung fu club..

In total I have 4 female characters and 1 male and in every case I have fallen asleep. The samurai on my right leg was done at a convention in manchester and I had to lay on a table in front of a crowd. In less than 20 mins or so I was fast asleep snoring. The tattooist woke me up and in the end the wife was bringing cups of coffee and chatting to me.
Whilst there I saw one big guy getting a tattoo done in a traditional japanese way ( using bamboo poles ). Now thats painful, however this guy was getting it done on his neck and this guy was sweating, red faced and in so much pain I could not believe he was still going after an hour.
At another convention a woman went screaming off after the tattooist had just touched her with the needle, he hadn't even done a line and she was gone.
Anna has put some good points as to why people react the way they do and why it's different for each individual. I do find it interesting as to why people get tats, especially when some of them can be very painful.

This is an amazing art form, and if I remotely liked this style to wear this would be the way to go. I am always amazed to watch them at work and see the art work that comes from it.

In a way I am glad there is the pain stigma attached to them. It makes people think twice before having them, then if they still want them they go ahead. If it wasnt there, then I think a lot more people would have them as a whim.

My first I think I went white, because he asked if I needed any thing.
I can of coke please, and just hold it on my neck unopened and cool me down.

Dont drink the night before.

I've got 18 of the lil buggers now and I tend to fall asleep.....

The easiest ones were on my thigh, inner forearms and my spine....

The worst were the ones on my stomach and going over the kidneys twanged a bit!

I've got this weird thing going on where if it starts to hurt then I kinda focus on the pain and then block it out....Dunno how I do it but it works...

If I got a tattoo I'd punch someones lights out as they would have had to drug me to get it done as its not my thing. Hair yes... tattoo's no.

The only way I can describe it is like a weird form of self meditation?

The ones I've got over my kidneys really hurt but I did the focus thing and then carried on talking a squaddie through his on his shoulders (he was a wimp....He did the whole white face and almost passing out thing  )

I think the sound of the gun gets to a lot of people, I was ok with it cos I worked at the studio so heard it day in and day out, whereas we'd get a few people coming in who were fine up until the gun was started......

Maybe it's like the dentists :smt044

I've got 6 - my only advice is take 3 paracetamol about 20 mins before you get it done. that seemed to work for me. and also where you have them makes such a difference. the shoulder bone and the calf muscle kills !!
