So, following on from another thread...

I have a few OCD type habits and I was wondering how many of us on here have similar?

I personally have a thing about handwashing. Wash my hands LOADS of times a day and I am never seen without my alcohol hand gel. I can't handle touching things other people touch, including handrails, shopping baskets, money etc etc.

I also have a few other habits like making all my coathangers point the same direction etc etc.

so, out of interest, what do you guys do?

I have a little habit at work, if i fit a tyre i have to make sure the logo of the tyre lines up perfectly with the valve.

OOOHH I forgot one. If I eat something with foil around it, ie, a Tunnocks Tea cake, I have to smooth the foil out with my finger nail.

What a tantrum I had when I did that the other day at work and a guy grabbed it and scrunched it up.

My daughter has to open/close doors before she can do anything else, also has to walk up and down steps a dozen or so times before carrying on down the street. Don't think it's OCD but sure does drive me nuts!

All the CD's are in alphabetical order of artist name but also obey the following rules...

:help: 'the' does not count in the artist title

:help: Alanis Morrisette is stored under 'M' (for Maladjusted Neurotic Bint :D )

:help: artists with multiple releases are stored in chronological order

:help: all CD's are in the same orientation in the drawers

Now you might think this a little strange, but we have circa 1000 discs so unless they are in some kind of order we would never find anything.

All our DVD's are in alpha-numeric order too...but then there are over 300 of those so the same reason applies.

All PV's books are in order of author...can you guess why? :smt118

I'm the same.

Another thing I've learned... my 'lucky' blue knee sliders (which have been mangled at both Croft and RAF Leeming) might not be so lucky, as I have crashed both times I've worn them.

My other black sliders have been down only once, but I changed them for the blue sliders and then crashed.

I can't stand people stacking dirty plates on top of one another.

Tv volume must be on an even number.

When doing the washing up it goes Cutlery, Glasses, Plates/Bowls then Pans and Oven stuff. I anything gets put down after I have finished the category it will wait until I go round the order again.

Phone has to ring twice before I answer.

I need to stack the dishwasher in a certain way, can't stand seeing mugs and glasses on the bottom rack

Also, for fear of reopening that particular can of worms, I hate seeing an apostrophe in the wrong place. The girl that used to do all our office work had a total blind spot when it came to punctuation and every time I went into the office there was a huge label marked "REQUISITION'S" staring me in the face.

When she left for another position I actually burnt that damned label...

Silly wee things like that totally get on your goat though. Start off as a silly wee thing and end up the single most irritating thing you can think of!

one of my mates has ocd i think, his chick was moaning about it, saying he always has to iron his shirt the night before. just wasnt right ironing in the morning. she got drunk and blurted this out in the pub saying, even when she's 'begging' him to go to bed, he has to go iron his shirt for work! also he has to seperate all the food on his plate, for instance sunday roast would have meat in one section, potatos int he other then veg in another, and they cant touch! that like contaminates them!

i havent read all the posts, but i dont think anyone is saying its not real or funny or anything. my housemate from last year has it and it made her life hell, and those around her.
but everyone does have OCD tendencies, i think thats all Nic is talking about, or little habits that become stuck or superstition.

i for example, cant queue up in tescos etc and just stand there, if there are boxes of gum or sweets or something i will make sure that the columns are equal (gum boxes usually have 2 columns per box of packets of gum) and if there is an uneven number, i'll put the last packet so its in the centre of the 2 columns.

Yes everyone has a level of anxiety - that's normal but it only becomes OCD when it is serious enough to significantly affect one's life and the phrase OCD is bandied about with regard to quirky habits in a way that can feel quite offensive to sufferers.

but shes not claiming to have OCD, or saying that its funny subject, actually it sounds to me like she's a little worried by her obsessive hand washing and whats to know if other people have obsessive behaviour or if its something she should worry about

and in no way in the OP does she make OCD seem humourous, or not to be taken seriously

Bri w
11-08-09, 07:31 AM
We all have habits, and all do things that probably appear humourous to others, even down to always putting my right shoe on first - if, by accident, i pick my left one first i'll put it down and pick up the right one. Wallet front right pocket, change and keys in front left.

Full on OCD isn't funny, nor do i think anyone was having a cheap pop at it. There's no harm in laughing at ourselves for it, which is what people are doing here.

My mate's son has the full on version, he's 28, and they quite literally can't leave him alone in the house. Once he gets into a cycle of doing something they have to ease him out of it, or he will still be doing it hours later, or even smash the place up thro' frustration. He started with it whilst revising for GCSE's - got mega good results but so sad to see the shell that he is now.

Couple of habbits,

Boxers have to be speperate from my socks, and all socks must be in pairs and rolled up any odd socks have their own little place where they wait for their partner to come through the wash/dryer cycle.

Wallet in front left, phone front right, keys back left.

Must finish a task if I start it, If something is going to take longer than a day to do I need to decide on a stopping point before I even start otherwise I'll carry on all night until its complete.

Plug sockets, if I see a socket not been used and its switched into the on position I have to turn it to off. A bloody nightmare when I go to B&Q and notice the sockets and switches isle but I try not to look at them when in peoples houses as it tends to go down badly if I walk around playing with sockets.

and Finally my desk/workspace I dont mind it been a mess but if I do tidy it I have to have it really tidy everything must line up etc. Even went to the trouble of making some hardboard desk tidys so that when I put stuff into my draws it doesnt take hours sorting it all instead it all goes into set areas, pens, pencils, colours, paper clips, rubbers etc.

Ok, I understand what you are saying but GP has hit the nail on the head. I was not claiming to have OCD, but I do have a certain level of obsession regarding the germs on my hands and thereafter, a very strong compulsion to wash them.

I would love to move to London, I would love working there but I know I wouldn't handle it due to the dirt. I spent 3 days in London at the end of April and if I had been on a subway or a bus I couldn't even drink from a bottle of juice, I wouldn't touch my face and I couldn't even touch cutlery until mI had washed my hands thoroughly...for like, 10 minutes.

At one point, I got to the stage I was almost crying because I needed to wash my hands!

This thread was meant as a serious thread. In no way was I laughing at the condition or poking fun at it or it's sufferers.

Me and the GF are heavy readers so books get organised by Genre, sub divided into Author, sub divided into Series by Alphabetical order of the Story arc name or order of writing if an overall title isn't available.

Same with DVD's, Genre, then alphabetical, and games by Platform, Genre, Name.

Oh and food has to be served up presentable, no sloshing onto plates!!! washing has to be done straight after cooking, sometimes during....and I have to lock and relock the bike several times to make sure :)

I always make sure my pockets on the bike jacket are zipped multiple times. I will check when I put something in them, then when I put my gloves on, then when I am sat on the bike and a final check as I am setting off.

I line my socks up in neat rows in the drawer, and the same with Tshirts which have to be folded in a particular way. All shoes are lined up under my bed in colour order, and shirts are hung facing the same way in colour order, same with suits. My toolboxes are the same, everything is laid out neatly and in size order... and then there's the kitchen cupboards.

I'm not really mentally unstable....
