I'm getting a few walls damp proofed in a house I let so will need replastering in one of the rooms. From memory it's a pretty standard 12'x10' room with two alcoves and a single window.

How much do you reckon it'd cost to replaster the whole room (inc and exc the ceiling?). Do you have to replaster the whole thing after damp proofing or just the bit they knock away for the course?

Cheers guys!

if they dampproof the wall and knock back to the brick then it'll need boarding or bonding out, then tis best to have the whole lot skimmed over, i'm no expert but my cousin is and he charges bout £100 per day and he works with his mate so thats £100 x 2 + materials, its about a days work.

Kwak is about right with that rough price. My brother is a plasterer and he charges anything upto £300 for the day

Depends very much on your location too. Central london worl for example always costs more than suburbs cos you gotta factor in travel and parking etc.

The house is in south Wales so shouldn't be high relatively, so you reckon the whole room would be 1-2 days work? I'll get some quotes in then as that's not too bad

Yeh a good plasterer will get that finished in that time.

My tame plasterer charges what the job is worth. I had a chimney breast (2 sides, front) skimmed by him a few weeks ago. £80 for a mornings work. He knew up front what I would pay, did he want the job or not.

I would also say a good plasterer should be able to do a room that size in a day.

But watch out some can be right mucky sods.

I have had one who I caught trying to clean his buckets in my 3 day old bath, new bath tub, not one that had been sat there, well you know.

Another who did my new kitchen, did his mix in a dustbin, very fast, very good quality job, but at the end of each coat, he turned his bin upside down and emptied it onto the new floor. If I had know he would do that I would have put a tarp down.

I bollocked the guy who recommended him. Oh he usually works on industrial and they do that on the concrete floor and clean up after.

Most of my brothers work is around Gatwick and Guildford areas. Cost varies depending on whether you look like you have plenty of money ;)

Were based in the midlands (Smethwick to be exact) and plasterers are on about £100 a day.
Because the amount of work has dropped, so has the daily rate.
This time last year most good tradesmen were on about £200 a day but hey, thats the recession for you.
Have you had the walls hacked back to bare brick?
If so, just dot and dab the walls yourself, tape and joint it and away you go.
Its really not as hard as you think as long as you get the first board on plumb.

Dot & Dab them yourself, buy some pre-mix and your away, it is a fine art though I tell you...When I was working as a plasterer I was never satisfied with one bit first time, you'd skim one part and feck up the bit that you just skimmed, it gets easier.

What does "skimming" actually mean/entail?

I've been told my walls need this....

Skimming, is a very thin top coat on a preped surface. That surface may be new board, or bonding on brick etc. and then polishing to give a smooth surface. It is more difficult than it looks.

Basically it is just applying plaster mix to the walls, I think it is the action you use that is known as the skimming though...

No, there is textured wallpaper on at the moment (sick) so would need to be removed and plaster knocked off, so I think it'd probably be 2 days work but I'd happily pay £200 for it
