I think sometimes it can be quite fun to say something particularly cutting or even offensive in such a way that it doesn't sound like it. Not necessarily open sarcasm but just very subtle use of vocabulary. I watch some of the period dramas shown on the box just so I can enjoy how politely they can have an argument. Has proved to be quite useful over the years in my job where you're not actually supposed to call someone a "whatever" directly to their face.
