Better make sure he has decided on a colour scheme first Ed
Lol... I will Cheers. My driving license runs out at the end of the month and I should really pull my finger out and sort it.

:gulp:
Umm, I may be being a thicky here (it's not unheard of) but ummm... do they run out? I wouldn't like to hazard a guess how old the piccy is on mine but it still kinda looks like me. In low light. If you squint. And if I'd been dunked in Oil of Olay overnight.

Photo licences have to be renewed and have the photo renewed every 10 years - I think it's about £17 ? Check your date!

Oooh, that'll be those dates next to 4a-4b on the front of the card?

And it will soon be changing to 5 years for those with C1,D1 entitlements. Probably to force people who don't use them to give them up.

Hmm, that's annoying as C1 is useful exactly once every six years. Assuming you move house every six years of course.

Grinch me old china. No need to get the photo signed unless its your 1st photo licence. You should get a form from the DVLA, i did. Mines off in the post tomorrow. And its £20 + the photo(s)

Just had a thought - do the DVLA remind you that its up for renewal or do you have to remember yourself?

Maybe a Hitler's licence post but I'm always pessimistic about this stuff- http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/watchdog/2009/04/dvla_removing_license_entitlem.html
Take a copy of your photocard before you surrender it to them in the post!

Ouch, no they dont Maria :(
Our Traffic lads have been doing lots of people for driving with expired photocards, no one seemed to realise that they have to be renewed. Fortunately Mr VT and I only need to renew ours next year.
So thats a heads up to everyone out there, check the expiry date on your licence, some police are not very sympathetic to the 'I didnt know' story.

Yes they do!
I got mine 6 weeks before it was due for renewal

Two points
1. If you renew as soon as you get the reminder, the new licence will only run for 10 years from when they issue it, so you'll lose a month or so every 10 years.
2. It's the same price for a replacement licence as it is to send off your old one & renew it. So I would recommend you just apply for a new one & say you lost the old one. Then you have no worries about losing your entitlement & also I'm sure a spare licence is bound to come in handy sometime ;)
Oh & 3. if you ever do lose your licence & have to replace it, make sure you update your photo so that it's 10 years before you have to pay the fee again.
I've never had a photo licence - still got the old 'parchment' variety.
I've, er em, moved house 3 times and sort of forgotten to tell them, oops.
Oh damn, now other people know - best get it sorted sharpish!

Ours didnt, we moved address in Feb a year and a half ago, yet we will still need to renew it next year...

Read somewhere recently that you can sort it out online, and this option gives you 21 days to return the old one?
Might help to look into that.

It's the photo that lasts 10 years. So if you send a new photo in with your change of address, yes it would last another 10 years. But since it costs £20 to change the photo, but change of address is free I wouldn't recommend it ;)

Ah, I did get it though the post but for the life of me I can locate the paper work, so I'll sort this tomorrow. I need to get my passport renewed anyway too, so I still need to get a photo done.

If you do decide to take this advice just remember which licence is which and don't make the mistake of producing the wrong one to a copper like some bloke did to me a few weeks back. They have an issue number on them and if you produce the one that you have made a signed declaration was lost/stolen you may find the copper decides to be a "****" (to quote YC) about it. Given just about everything these days can be cross referenced against computer records producing dodgy documents at the roadside really isn't recommended.

I was actually meaning the DVLA's profiteering to be ****-like behaviour!
But for a copper at the side of the road, I reckon if everything else is legit then they should let folk off with a warning about it. Out of order when the fine for a slight clerical error is worse than doing something totally stupid or dangerous.

Erm, they sent me a reminder, so they do!
Well I got my photos today and as Viney said I don't need it signed for the driving license.
Lets hope they dont get yours and my photos mixed up as mine is on its way now!!

I think there must be a bit of an issue with the reminders! I have spoken to numerous people recently who haven't realised that they needed to renew their licences, obviously some people are getting letters and other aren't. Anyway, mine isn't due for another 4 years.....
Should be interesting as I still have blonde hair and a dark goaty, might look like I have no hair in those new black and white photos.
