View Full Version : A knack to starting it?

Having collected the bike and left it overnight in my garage I went out today to find there were issues starting it up. It kept failing like the battery had died. The battery had not died though as it was serviced / charged etc etc and on ignition the lights and all the usual dash workings occurred.

Anyway after much tries I think I flooded it so gave up. Then went in 10 minutes later and it started, just.

Is there something I should do / know when starting from cold?

curvey or pointy?

Pointy dude (I saw da photos)

Clutch in, engine kills switch off; hit the starter is all I do with mine and it fires. Have you got a charger? If only only just started you might have drained the battery a bit. Other than a nice road should bump it back up.

As it's fuel injected you can only pull the clutch in and press the starter.
As far as I am aware thats it.

Crusty terminals, corroded cable ends, bad earth, dodgy starter or solenoid are a few causes. You say the battery was serviced, but what is its age and condition?

Could be any of the above I guess, not sure.

It has started a few times today, was just this morning that was the real problem. Im about to go for a blat, so will monitor this over the coming days.

It has a 3 month warranty so can always have it looked at if needs be.

A mate with an SP1 suggested there will be an idling control / swith somewhere under the faring, so might be if we can find that it is something to do with it?

That works fine for me also

I think I saw mention of an idle control in the manual, but if it's been check over by the shop it should be set up but thats only for tickover.
The ecu and sensors should fuel it correctly for start up.

Seem to be discussing two issues here...

I have been out this afternoon and started /stopped with no issues.

It was only this morning when I tried it after a long night of no usage that I had an initial problem. It felt like the battery was flat. However the dash and lights dont suggest this is the case.

I will record tommorow and post it on youtube to show you the sequence of events. I may have been trying too quickly to start it today - should I let the noise and dash illumination go on for a bit before attempting to start?

Ahh poo Dizeee hope you get it sorted.

Can't be as bad as me, I wondered why mine wouldnt start when I had it in gear - side stand down ha ha ha

TBH I think it is fine, it was a minor thing and I did get it sorted. Just seems to be when left for a long time.

My old superdream did the same but then that was old, **** and with a manual choke. How do these things start outside in minus 4 in the winter?

As mentioned it's the ecu and sensors, it's all computerised these days.

Yes, that'd be the fuel injector starting up(I think!), trying to start it before the bike has finishing whining will probably not work :)

Optimate charger is your friend.Despite the lights seeming fine you probably have a weak battery.SVs need a lot of welly to start them, and anything less than a top nick battery will struggle, especially when it gets a bit colder.

Maybe a new battery it is then.

Not convinced the lights are as bright as they should be. Very yellow...

Totally with BB on the Optimate. My 675 has a tiny battery and anything less than top nick, it won't start. So I put it on the Optimate all the time, even if it's just been for a long run, and it starts first time every time. Go get one, you won't regret the spend.

What is it and how does it work?

I am going from a double garage without power to the house of my dreams with no garage and street parking...

Its a charger/maintainence unit.
It will chechk the state of the battery and tell you if its ok or knackerd.
Also when the bike is not used for weeks it will maintain the battery so it's always tip top.

Needs a power point but you can get extension leads to add on to extend the range from the charger to the bike and comes with permanent on bike weather proof connectors.
There are various makes from about £28 upwards.

above as an example, but I think it's a bit expensive on that site.

So next question, how on earth does one get to / molly coddle the battery?

Just leave the optimate on when not in use for more than two weeks, if it tells you the battery is OS when you fisrt set it up then you need a new battery and go from there.

You're not trying to start it with the lights on are you?

cant turn the lights off on a pointy dude......as already said chances are the batt is either duff or just short on charge due to been sat in a dealers....ride the thing and it should be fine, of course an optimate works wonders too
