Says in the manual to replace the chain with a DID 525V8 108 links. Where do you buy them online?

They have 525 V but not 525 V8. Does that matter?

No. The 525V is a suitable replacement for the OEM chain.

Or buy the OEM set from Robinsons. Not too expensive as it includes the sprockets as well. Only problem is that it is supplied as an endless chain so you have to drop out the swingarm or break it and re-rivet it. Think a new link is also included in the package.

The sprockets don't really need changed. They were changed along with the chain just recently but the chain hasn't lasted any time at all :(

How recently? I always change chain & sprocks at the same time. If your sprockets are at all worn badly they'll wear your chain faster accordingly.

Just looked at the bank statement to see when I paid and it wasn't as recent as I thought. It was the beginning of April.

What make is the genuine suzuki one?

visual inspection on the front sprocket might be an idea if your really skint but it is good practise to change them together. Not a clue they are just steel with no branding on IIRC. You can get DID 525 chains with steel sprockets for about £70 the kit on the net

I'm not going to be cheap when it comes to chain/sprockets. Don't want another tzr moment.
Where have you seen these kits?

With respect Dave, if you changed all three items at the same time you'd probably be swapping in under 10k miles. The front one usually wears first as it's rotating almost 3 times to the rear. We got 30k out of an OEM chain, without Scottoiler, but that was with several sprocket changes.

The front sprocket came off the tzr and jammed between the frame and swingarm pivot, locking the rear wheel.

20mm play at one point, 35mm at another. :(
Won't be riding it unless it's to the shop to get a new chain

Cleaning time!

hmm interesting, it makes sense that if a sprocket looks ok to the eye it shouldn't do anyharm but I was told to change them all at the same time when I first started and never really questioned it.

Dave, I think we all know that shagged sprockets will ruin a good chain and some of us at least realise that the counter shaft sprocket is the fastest wearing part. By replacing that sprocket regularly (or in my case rotating with a couple of others at each service to even out the wear) it is possible to minimise the wear on the chain caused by sprocket wear. The replace everything way of thinking is still right, but this just goes one step beyond that. One rear sprocket, one chain, three or four countershaft sprockets, oiler and a bit of TLC for maximum mileage.

Good thinking really, might do that on my next chain.

Why are these chain and sprocket kits only £80?

The chain is the most costly item, the sprockets are peanuts in comparison. So for the sake of the chain it's worth the extra pennies.

I put a tsubaki x-ring chain on at the start of the year and it's barely needed adjusting. I think I paid £100 with steel sprockets. Also looks wicked in gold.

I think the original fitment by Suzuki (at least on my 99 model) was D.I.D. As Pete said, they're endless chains so need the the swingarm dropping out. Most alternatives are split chains so will need a riveting tool to join them properly, unless you can borrow one you're looking at at least £30 for a tool. So it's the old time/money debate

If you want a chain that lasts the longest, buy a DID 525 ZVM gold X-ring chain. It's suitable for fitment to an SV and will last a lifetime if properly maintained. They don't cost that much more than the lower grades but are excellent in terms of strength and longevity.

Even a cheap DID chain should last quite a while if a Scottoiler is fitted. The one on my Versys hasn't been adjusted in the 4500+ miles its done from new, but the Scottoiler was fitted before the bike ever hit the streets. There's no visible wear at all.

That's expensive for a cheaper lower grade chain and sprox set. DID ZVM chain and something like JT or Caravielli sprockets will be about the same price and will last longer if looked after

Yeah but remember to select the right number of links (108 IIRC) and I canny remember the sprocket sizes think it's like 15/45 but am very likely wrong just find out what they are for the SV and get some steel sprockets (I usually end up with JT ones).

google bandcexpress - think they do em. Can't you get em from the same place your getting the chain (if theyre not really overpriced) to save on postage?
