Not very nice

New (three month BAB here) is it just me, my helmet or the bugs around Wilts & Dorset, but on evening rides especially I have to put up with bugs / flies whizzing up the inside of my helmet and if not stunned or dead (bristled to death on my beard) they walk up & down the inside of it.

I'm sure they fly up between my chin and the front of the helmet as there's an inch gap there.

Any advice ?

Cheers

Scarf or neck tube. Or do what I did- gaffer tape a bit of cloth to the bottom of your lid to close the chin gap. Keeps the wind out too

Clamp you jaws together, then open your lips like a big grin then suck

Doesn't stop the buggers getting in but it acts like a filter.

Just remember to clean your teeth before kissing anyone important!

Love this pic... reminds me of the Biker from (I think) the original Gumball Rally film.

I had a dead something INSIDE THE VENT... must have just crashed through the outside and landed inside. Couldn't get him out either, tried with tweezers and he just disintegrated!

I so misunderstood what this thread was about and although relieved that it was not about what I thought it could have been, I am also slightly disappointed. :p

Am I the Orger with the dirtiest mind?

I recommend a scarf, although I was at first going to recommend that you see your Pharmacist!

Going off track a wee bit here, but one November, coming back from Inverness, the road was wet and mucky, but it wasn't actually raining (therefore the visor was getting dirtier and dirtier), so had to slow down to about 50 and raise my visor, just so I could see where I was going. It was dusk, too, so that didn't help. Then....splat...something hit me just above the bridge of my nose. To this day I don't know what it was (I'm guessing it was big fat moth).....but.....ugh!.....it slithered down the side of my nose, down my face and it was all I could do to stop safely. Immediately into my pockets for a tissue. None! I hauled the sleeve of my jumper down past my bike jacket sleeve and wiped it away. Horrible, horrible!!

So although I am not the dirtiest Orger, I am up there then? \\:D/\\:D/

I wish I could tell you why I have such a dirty mind, but apparently I have been amused by my own wind since birth, much to my Mother's shame. :smt084

Kate, I had a similar experience up in Scotland, I found out afterwards that the cause was a Haggis dropping. There must have been a flock of them flying over me on the way to their roost in one of the dis-used malt mines :D

I blame watching to many "Carry-On" films as a boy.

I must admit, being a Born-Againer, I do struggle at times. On the last evening ride-out we stopped for a coffee and a nice lady I was with got a spray and a tissue out and asked if I needed my helmet cleaning - I love biking :smt082

I had a wasp in my helmet briefly in France last week. Luckily I just opened my visor and it got sucked out quickly. For a second I could see it crawling round the inside of my visor and I wasn't happy!

Ref the gap at your chin, what lid have you got? They may be getting sucked up there. Don't you have a wee mesh guard to put across it that came with your lid?

I keep my lid in the garage. If you want shivers down your spine, put your lid on when there's a spider in the gaps where your ears go. Couple of miles down the road it starts crawling into your ear! Serves you right for forgetting the ear plugs.

The worst wasp experience has to be it hitting you between your temple and your cheek pads, getting stuck, then you can feel it wriggling around trying to get it's ar*e end on your face to sting you.

Lift visor and look sideways work quite well for clearing bugs at speed.

Don't you hate it when a bug hits you chin vent and you get the squashed bug smell flowing through your lid?

Anyone else itchy?

Seriously, if a spider crawled into my ear when I was riding, I would crash. If a spider was in my helmet or anywhere near me when I was riding I would crash. I am terrified of them - to the extent it isn't funny!!

I've had 1 wasp in my lid on the road didnt sting me.
Had one go into my body armour while downhilling in france that f'er got me 3 times that we counted on my shoulder. I had to bail off into a field to rip my stuff off and get the ******* out. (Brilliant fun to watch apparently).
