View Full Version : Shout at me, I am an idiot.

I was moving the SV around the garage today and over balanced, dropping her very slowly on her right hand side. As she lay down the front indicator bulged and then shattered. The saddest part of this, she went down really slowly because I did not have the strength to hold her up, but just enough to make sure that she did not drop, so there is no other damage other than a 5mm scratch on the edge of the fairing. :(
Once she was down I was able to get into a good position and pick her back up, which took some doing, where upon I ripped something inside and am now back in bed with the old pain flaring up again. I had been pain free for almost six weeks prior to this and feel like I have ripped old scars. I am such an idiot. Carol was really sweet and has said that it hardly matters, indicators are easy to fix, but that is besides the point. I am really cross with myself.
I have not even been for a ride yet and I have still dropped her, not fair. Oh well, time to get a new indicator then. :geek:
Wonder what I can find at work that is both cheap and pretty?

That's the best kind of drop, minimal damage. Doesn't stop you feeling like a complete t1t though. Everyone's done it.
Hope you heal up as quick as the bike will!

I put my indies back together with heat and melted the plastic back together, held out and looked OK as was done from inside. Depends on how bad it is I suppose.

Thank you for the kind words of encouragement folks, I do feel really stupid. If I was actually riding her, I could have passed it off as an enthusiastic off, but no. I was moving her around the Garage to make room because we have three motorbikes, two mountain bikes and the generator for Carols band's PA. Silvie went down on the sloping concrete bit that joins the garage to the road, so had not even made it to Tarmac before I dropped her. :laughat:
Thanks for the offer of one of your spares Shelly, if I am unable to find a nice cheap pair at work (Halfords) I may ask you about one. :smt059
As to why I struggle to pick my SV up, until very recently I have been suffering with chronic pain due to major surgery in 06. Things had improved so much that I have been off the TENS for about three months and have hardly had to take pain killers at all recently. I am hoping that this is just a flair up and will fade away again. :smt102
Oh well, hopefully this week the new bits for my CG will arrive and Carol can put my little bike back together. I miss Henry, but Silvie is my one true biking love, even if I treat her badly and drop her in the garage because I am a (rhymes with hat!). :smt006

How is CG repair going? Did you strip the top end in the end to see if top end had grenaded itself?
We have all dropped bikes. Better to get it out of way sooner.
Picking bikes up is all technique.
Bend down, push back against seat and lift. You can even lift some overweight POS like this, like BMW or goldwing or something.

Carol stripped the engine and then did that teeth sucking thing that means I have either broken something expensive or am about to abuse the post man again!
She has ordered a load of parts from M&P, but they got delayed by the Bank Holiday weekend. She has said that with the new bits it will actually be better than when we bought the bike and she is going to teach me how to fit it all when it does finally arrive. Turns out it needed a few extra bits, but (and I know that this sounds lame and girly which is not good for a card carrying dyke like me) I don't know what they are or where they go! :smt061 She has said though that the important bits are actually ok, so way to go Honda, the CG is indistructable nearly. Judging by the size of the box that is about to arrive, I am wondering if it is going to have a new engine in kit form in it!
As for dropping Silvie, I am just glad it was not out in town where I could be seen looking like a loonie by passers by. Thanks for the tip about lifting. I just hope that by the time I finally manage to get on Silvie, I have not knackered her completely. :smt018 I really do not want to have to pick her up again.

don't be hard on yourself JF - we've all dropped bikes before, and at least a) it wasn't in public and b) there's v little damage done to the bike. (I'm sure she'll be grateful for your self-sacrifice there!)
Oh and if it's any consolation I can barely pick a bike up - thankfully haven't had to practice too much! It is largely technique, but you do need a good dose of leverage as well and TBH I'd always look for help if it's available.
Hope you GWS anyway! x

Awwwww, thank you every one for your lovely comments. :D
Good news on the SV front. I picked up a set of mini indicators at a very reasonable price (thanks to staff discount) and just have to find the time to fit them to the bike, they are actually quite sweet, look really dinky and should just plug into the gaps left by the old ones coming off.
Thanks for the offer of bits from folks too, Shelly and Rorshach, you are both stars. :D Big hugs to you both.
Silvie is a lovely Pointy (ooh I can feel the hate from the Curvy owners!) and to be honest, I love her to bits. Even Carol, who is a dyed in the wool Kawasaki owner has said lots of nice things about Silvie.
As for me, I was back on the TENS last night and had a quiet day at work thankfully, but had to ask for help a couple of times. I did get laughed at when I told them I had dropped the bike in the garage entrance, but despite a some minor pain I am in good health. I think the healing I have been doing recently has been good and so when I hurt myself, I actually did very little real damage. I can't ask for more than that. :geek:
Finally Carol has been a tower of strength as always. :smt049
She does not realise it, but she is so good for me, I would be lost with out her. This weekend, three friends of mine split up with their long term partners. I am so lucky that she still has yet to see sense and realise that actually I am a flaky old whatsit. It is her birthday this coming weekend and I have arranged a party for her friends to come and say hello and show her how much she is loved. There may be one or two straight people there, but some how I think they will be in the minority! :rave:

Did my return to running tonight- only 1 mile, 9:32. I'm satisfied with that for today. Expect it to be under 9:00 in 3 or 4 runs time. I think I may sign up for the Breakfast run 8 miles in March next year- set a goal...

did similar after i'd done a service. Had grease on my hands and tried to move it round, it slipped and all I could do was lower it slowly into the wall.
Realising if I moved it'd fall to the ground but if I stayed still I'd pull most muscles in my body I had to yell to next door who was cutting his hedge to come help me lift it back over. He laughed an almost evil laugh when he saw the predicament I was in.
For this Jayne you have my sympathy :) hope you and the bike heal well.

As you've discovered indicators are replacable vertebrae aren't. So, next time you drop something weighing ~200kg get some help, that's what men are for!

When I first joined this thread, I had a boyfriend and he lived about 70 miles away from me. I bought the bike with the intention of riding to his for weekends of passion. :riding:
I have always been involved in gay culture and meeting Carol was a revelation, she is not the typical gay woman, but she is very strong and determined. We chatted on Gaydar girls for ages and when I finally met her, I knew I had found my one true love. We have been together ever since. :thumright:
I did give boys a try though, three boy friends and four girlfriends before I met Carol means that I have been switching between them for years. These are not dirty secrets, just a bit of honesty. :smt038
Anyway, thanks every one for the kind comments, they mean a lot and as I said to another of you folks recently. I may not recognise many of you in the street, but I have come to value you as friends. The world would be a much colder place with out the warmth of friendship that we share on here. Thank you every one for your friendship, compassion, pee taking and joking. You have touched my heart.

Hi VT,
If it wasn't Jayneflakes I might have made some allusion to the other uses for men, but she's clearly happy so it wasn't appropriate. I was simply pointing out that blokes have some genetic advantages when it comes to picking up a 200kg bike. Especially if you've already hurt your back.
As far as "turning" lesbians, why would I want to?? It would be just as ridiculous as trying to interest me in men!!
Keith.

I fixed the damage to Silvie yesterday, two shiny new indicators fitted to the front end and it only took three hours (including a stop due to heavy rain and an urgent chat with a friend). I have never had to do that sort of thing before and it was a great learning experience for me. The hardest part of the exercise was making the new units fit on nicely in to the large odd shaped hole that the OE ones left behind. However a quick blanking plate and all was well. The new indicators look really dinky and I am very pleased with my self. I did have to swap the plugs over to the new units, but that took minutes and was a doddle. :D
However, things were slowed down considerably by the sudden and essential gossip with my friend Siouxsie about her date later that night. I can report that she looked amazing, blonde, 5'10", slim and a nice bust. It strikes me as amazing that she is single. What is wrong with straight guys these days? Just because she is a hard core punk rocker...
Blah...
