I need to learn a proper knot so I dont look a knob when I'm tying things down.
Imagine I'm tying down a load inside a tranny van to the hooks.
I want a knot where I pull it and it gets tighter, but when I want to release it I do something simple and it releases, not sit there 5 minutes picking away at the rope.
Similarily for tying a bike to a trailer, securing a bike to a platform for work etc.
I know ratchet straps are the answer, but they're never there when you need them.

I believe the old 'round turn and two half hitches' might be the knot that you seek...

NOT to do it up so tight you cant undo it again.

TK Max had a pack of 5 ratchet straps for £7 the other day.

The problem with knots are that as the knot gets tighter the rope tension gets less therefore not actually securing the goods as it were.

You also won't be able to get the amount of tension you will need and then be able to tie the knot whilst holding that tension.

Agreed on the Bowline, it tightens when it's under pressure, but dead easy to undo.

I'd just buy some ratchet straps.

The Bowline is great for putting a loop in the end of a rope, but no use for tying off an end. If you're going to tie something down and you want to pull the rope tight, yet still be able to release easily I always use a combination of slip knots. I'm not sure what it's called but pull the rope tightish then put a slip knot in the rope about two feet from where you are going to fasten it to, then pass the lose end around the ring/securing point and back through the loop created by the slip knot. You can then pull back on the lose end giving you a two to one reduction to pull the rope really tight, and when it's tight enough do another slip know around the body of the rope. For safety I then do a half hitch with the second slip loop around the line to stop it flapping around and working lose. To undo you just untie this half hitch and pull the lose end.

Double dolly knot and stand on the second loop with your foot, that holds anything and if not happy add a third dolly.
It works like a pulley and the more dollies you add the more pressure you exert
Finish off with a half hitch.
To undo it release the half hitch and pull the loose end,the whole lot just comes undone.
