View Full Version : Cheapest brake discs?
mods feel free to move, not sure if this is in the right seksh
ive been looking at getting new discs for both front and rear. the cheapest i could find new are from busters for £89.99 each (still a bit steep imo)
a seller on ebay seems to have the same disc for £160 for both fronts and about £50-60 for the rear
heres the bestest bit... if i was to get them from south wales superbikes it will cost me £441 for the front and rear
busters seem to be top of the list at the mo
so do any of you lovely orgers know of any sellers of said disc at a decent price?

I am not going to tell you what to get or where from.
My advice however, Brake discs are subjected to stresses, abrasion and thermal cycling. They also save your life. Therefore, please don't make cost the primary driver when choosing discs. Go for ones you will be confident to use at extreme braking with a bloody great 4x4 bearing down on you. Also daft as it sounds, fakes are known to exist

ive searched and searched and im still none the wiser
as good as the search facility on this site is, there can be to much conflicting opinion which just ends up with me being even more confused than when i started

tbh cost is a factor at the mo. all 3 discs have worn evenly down to the limit so i have to do the 3 at once
the discs from busters are EBC £90. surely they are a good disc?

EBC is a safe choice.

yes as others have said, "cheap" and "brakedisc" aren't normally words I'd want to associate together for obvious reasons, as long as you make sure the ebay ones are the same (ask for the part number) then I don't see a problem, but a statement of "the same as" would have me turning away rather sharpish.
Cheers Mark.

Do not know what Ebc's are like today, but when I bought then a few year ago for my CB 350SG (solid discs not like the two piece ones today), they looked good to start with but the plating soon deteriorated where the water and dust spray up.
Also I had Ebc HH pads fitted and they only lasted 3 months, wore down to the metal and started ripping the disks too bits (well 3 month and less than 1000 miles I wasn't checking wear).

Plating on disks? Your experiences with EBC pads have been the opposite to mine.
The only time I have torn disks (not EBC btw) and pads up is constantly running them across black soil country after rain. The clay is incredibly abrasive. The worst has been a full set of new disks and pads in three weeks, but all vehicles out there were experiencing the same problem. Not exactly SV country though.

Yeah they were plated, because when they had been "Worn in" the rain would rust the brainig area but leave the non working part as bought until it degraded.
Wasn't impressed, as i say they were one piece for 1985 tech bike.
Nearly **** my self on first braking with new pads thought I gas going to hit the car in front and these were EBC.
I found this quote on the net "Zinc Plated"
Made from tough heat treated carbon steel for extra long rotor and pad life. Elliminates rotor galling which wears pads. Available with or without scraper holes (according to original design).
All discs are precision ground and zinc plated to prevent corrosion and are a direct size for size bolt on replacement for original parts.

EBC are usually good stuff, if you can try and buy direct, they sometimes do discounts
If you can part with the money I'd look at OEM, Suzuki re-jigged their prices a while back and I think an OEM disc is around £130. That's a bloody good deal. The OE discs for my ZX6R are £230 each. I looked into my options and bought a set of grimeca discs at ~£180 per disc. I could have got EBC discs but decided while they undoubtedly work sufficiently, several people have suggested that EBC discs work best with EBC pads, and these pads seem to accelerate the wear on the tokico 4 & 6 pot caliper bodies due to the thin backing plate.

i think i shoud have used the words reasonably priced
ive already got the ebcHH pads. i bought them a couple of months ago because i knew a disc change would be soon. carbon lorraines on the bike at the mo so i wanted to sdee what the difference would be
these are the discs from busters

i know nothing of the science bit with discs but £440 for OEM's are a tad spensive

If money's tight I'd happily have EBC Contour's on the front for that money. Most people will be using EBC Prolites which will have a higher iron content for higher friction, but the contours will be fine.

IIRC Sandy bike spares only stock Kagizume (http://www.kagizume.com/main_page.htm) brake discs.
They might be fine but I don't know anyone thats used them.

Not used the discs yet, but have had good service from CJ Accessories
www.cjaccessories.co.uk (http://www.cjaccessories.co.uk) with supplies of other stuff, oil, filters tools etc.etc.
They list Armstrong rear discs, wavy, perhaps give them a ring see what they say, price looks to be OK.
Let me know what you think, think mine will be due in the near future.
