View Full Version : Giving up biking
I'm having some health related issues and need to quit riding. It probably won't be forever, I hope, but I was wondering, what happens to my insurance no claim bonus? Do I lose it with too large a gap?
Also, can you get more money for selling a bike in pieces that selling it whole?

If it's a curvy yeah it's likely .... possibly on pointys too.
I was told by my insurance the gap is 2years + , may vary company to company - enquire

Kinda depends who you insure with when you return (I believe it's the next company usually imposing the term) but 99% of the time it expires after 2 years of no insurance. Sometimes you can convince companies otherwise when you return, though.

If you're off biking for longer than 2 yrs but a 100 quid $h1tter e.g done in 125/old bike, insure it 3rd party only for peanuts, leave it in the shed/mates garage etc and you've kepy our NC B.
I shall be doing this with both car & bike if it looks like I'm going to be out of the UK for too long.
It's a good idea Tim, but I'll probably have a few other things on my mind for the forseeable future.

Defo buy an old cheapo £100 bike, insure it, and leave it in a mates garage. Saves your NCB from going bye bye.... Keeps the NCB building up nicely too....
Most insurance co's allow you two years before dumping it..
how much to sell an engine with 16k miles on it?

Ask your insurer for a certificate of entitlement so you can prove your NCB when you get back on board.

Ask your insurer for a certificate of entitlement so you can prove your NCB when you get back on board.
Should be enough to keep your renewal certificate same as if you were looking immediately. But there is the expiry problem of course...
I think you might have the best luck going back to your old insurer when you start insuring a bike again, they seem to be the tales where I have heard of people getting some NCB after it elapsed.

It used to be three years, When I was at Uni I insured a wrecked Honda step thru that was in a mates shed just to keep up my no claims - then let it go one year thinking I would get another bike within 3 years, then didn't #-o, which is actually why when I did get a bike, I chose to buy an SV, V-twin grunt making up for the fact it's a small engine, plus group 10 insurance.

+1 get them to give you a proof of no claims.
When I got rid of my car insurance I got a letter from the insurers. It said I had 9 years NCB. that is a damm lie I should have 32 years NCB entitlement.
I know from my lad, some insurers really do faff arround validating your entilement. Even though we had emailed them the proof as soon as they requested it. He was getting nasty letters 3 months later and they were threatening to withdraw his policy at the end of the week. Suddenly an email to say thanks for the proof you sent us 3 months ago all is now fine.
BTW get well soon
