Nah.....anyone coming to the AR should just be able to chillax and have fun, but I am looking into getting a local mobile mechanic on standby so that anyone with a problem will have the best chance of getting up and running again!
Got two getting back to me next week!
Was only jesting!
There'll be plenty of competent mechanics about if someone should have a mishap, I shall also have a van and tie-down straps, so can aid in the return to base!

I knew you were joking hun.....but I have actually been looking into this because I'm nothing if not thorough....lol.
So.......after reading DavePrestons post......do you have a van, tie down straps AND a spare chain?????

The Wales proposal allows some fantastic scenic riding opportunities for those who have never been. You will be hard pressed to beat it south of Scotland. And great stuff to do for non-riders, eg. Hay, walking etc, even 4x4-ing.
Baskerville has been used as a location by UKGSer, never went myself but I think it was a good location. The hotel as has been pointed out has rooms etc but these are a bit 'amusing' and Fawlty Towers-ish I understand , not that that in any way detracted from anything. I understand the 'disco' is fun if anyone one is interested but doesn't affect anyone if not, but young men, abandon all hope ye who enter there, we nearly lost a whole contingent of Polish blokes to local women not so far from there .
The key thing is it is geared up for what you need, most campsites not being so, and I imagine you won't have to worry about noise etc too much.
Petrol station just about opposite.
Some good traillie riding around there too ;)

No spare chain unfortunately, I'm a believer in they'll never break. LOL

Hahahaha, now I'll be waiting for the thread, "Bl00dy chain snapped today"
As for what the White Rabbit said........+1 to all of it.....it's perfectly geared up, the hotel is fit for purpose as far as the rooms go and I've only heard good things about them.
You get what you pay for......apart from the camping, in which case you get a whole lot more!!!
Been away for a few days. Can we just announce it at Wales yet?

Not sure how but could someone create an unofficial poll along the lines
AR10 - Wales
Happy with what has been proposed lets just sort the date?
Need more time for others to beat it?
I personally can't see how anyone can beat what has been offered by the Wales crew so lets get to voting on the dates?
Not done an AR before but this does sound about as good as it could ever get.
I too think the Wales suggestion sounds terrific.
There might be an explanation why nobody else has suggested anything: it seems to me that expectations have become too high and so the planning becomes a nightmare. It's no longer enough to find a campsite and a good route. People expect very high standards but want to pay as little as possible. Silk purses and sow's ears etc. Whilst high standards are nice - they aren't really essential - are they?

Ed, I'm in total agreement with you. Was talking about it with Stretch and Squirrel Hunter on Thursday night and really....all that's needed is a field to camp in, toilets, somewhere to get food like a pub nearby and a well planned route.
Messie and Vox did a superb job this year and When Hovis asked me if I wanted to help him, I honestly thought that we could do it, but it would never live up to peoples expectations and so we'd probably have a complete nightmare.
Then we stayed away at Baskerville Hall Hotel for a weekend camping with a Land Rover Competition rally and could not believe what I was able to arrange for such a ridiculously low price.
The venues are out there, but I think unless you happen to stuble upon them as I did and relate them to and SV AR.......they can be very hard to find.
I just hope we get it, but to be honest.......I think it may end up being a perfect venue for any Wales weekends......we'll have to wait and see!

Like I said at the start, its your forum, its your weekend, you guys should have input into the process of site selection and dates.
Therefore IMHO I dont see any good reason why somebody shouldnt start a thread with a poll in it. However I dont think this person should be a mod / admin or somebody who has put a proposal together.
So if somebody wants to start a poll then IMHO get on with it, dont wait for a mod to come along and do it...

don't forget the ride out has to actually go to somewhere not just round in a circle, not much point of that.
i think your geting confused with a track day?:p

Hovis, the only thing i would say is that 160+ miles is a bit long on an AR. It will eman that EVERYONE will need a refuel half way round, and with 70 bikes, that could take a while. Just a thought oh granery one. Other than that, im for Hay on Wye. I used to stay at the holybush inn a few times...until it went downhill.

yup,
on the 2 ARs i have been on there has been 2 petrol stops, just like AR10, so i cant realy see a problem there. it just means everyone filling up.
now, weather people can/want to do a longer rideout is a differant matter, it started out at 190miles, everyone on the peaks ride seemed happy with it, i have got it down a bit, and i think 160 is fine (last year was 130ish)
its early yet though, get a few recces planned sooon

I was looking with a few others this weekend at Hovis' planned route, and i personally would be more than happy doing 160 miles i will say that. We just did this peaks run and it all was fine and that was over 160 i belive? GM correct me if i'm wrong was even more again? Either way i'll go with the flow i'm coming whether it be in wales or kuwalalumpa.

AR08 only had one offical stop... But I had to cater for Rick on his VTR which is why he and a few others did a splash and dash at Dorchester... remember that if you get people with VTR's they only have less tank range, Remember what France was like...
You get such a big mix of riders on an AR that you might not get on the smaller weekend meets. AR08 had two riders on 125's on it, once of which was on L-plates... ( I know he wasnt part of the org, but the rideout was still done in such a way as he could participate in it )
The GM rideouts were longer, but you've got much longer stretches of road with no junctions etc and the roads in 2008 were pretty empty of traffic so making progress was hell of a lot easier...
It depends on the roads, if you have big long open sections of road, where the speed can be upped a little, you can make progress. Where as if you are riding on tighter, more technical B roads, it does slow the average speed down.
Anyway this is all stuff that can be worked out during reccies, or at a later date. Theres plenty of time for discussion and reccie of routes and fuel stops...

Peaks was nearer the 200 mark, but then we are tougher folk up here.
IIRC NW5 was 246 miles.
I, personally, feel a bit hard done by if the route is only just over 100 miles and i'm feeling fresh beforehand. But i think there was talk of a cut off section where people wanting a shorter ride could loop back round to the campsite.
Is this correct Hovis? You think it'll get done?
I, personally, feel a bit hard done by if the route is only just over 100 miles and i'm feeling fresh beforehand. me too, but the AR is diferant, looking back they are normaly about 120-130 miles, and they seem to take a full day. its early yet, so dont want to commet to anything yet, but the route will be good, no awsome:smt041

Hmm, I'm tempted to kit myself up to play support biker :)
With 35liters per Pannier, and 50 in the Top box, plus the back seat and Luggage rack I can pack:
Fuel
Puncture repair kit (50 tyres worth)
Foot pump
Jump starter kit
First aid
Flood Light
And an awsome Orange rotating light that would sit on the luggage rack XD!

Looks like I can fit 2x5 Litre Jerry cans in each Pannier easy enough for 20 liters but 40 out of 70 liters used seems a bit of a waste, will experiement with a larger can and see what I can load up without upsetting the balance of the bike.
if everyone fills up when at the petrol station we shound not need pertol (viper might on his VTR) but you never know.

Could be useful when turning into a car park or petrol station to let the traffic approaching know that the group is not turning all that quickly.
PsychoCannon
16-09-09, 11:48 AM
Oh yeah sorry I didn't mean I'd be holding the group back :)
It just means that when I'm in a slow moving situation (Congestion, all of us trying to get into/out of a car park, or pulled up to assist a breakdown) I can set up the beacon =p
I do intend to be riding the white lines a lot or being stopped in strategic locations when the group is passing certain ...obstacles... to make sure other traffic gives us a clear run and a beacon will be handy especially as large groups of bikes tend to steal peoples attention :)
That and when traffic sees a large bike, black leathers, white lid, reflective jacket and a beacon people tend to give you a bit more leeway when holding routes open for bikes and don't like to cut you up so much :), not that I'm suggesting that I'm going to try impersonate a traffic officer just that it has it's unintended benefits :)
*on that note I notice most of the London Police bikes are BMW's instead of the Pan Euros now?

Besides I've only just reluctantly given in and started wearing the reflective vest at night or when raining due to my last off, I doubt I'll be striping my bike florescent any time soon =p
If the two bikes I saw on Monday are representative, they're R1200RT-P. It'll have come from the 1300 pan weave affair, if I recall.
I don't think a beacon is a good idea though... Motorists don't seem to have too much of a problem with ordinary riders blocking uncontrolled exits when they see that its 20 or more bikes, if you're reasonably nice about it.

Oh.....as for the weather, a few have made tongue in cheek requests for the weather to be good. Just thought I would repeat for those that didn't know, we'll have our own bar open for the weekend, exclusive to us and so if it starts pouring with rain, we can all just go in there.....LOADS OF ROOM! plus a big huge tent/maquee thingy

In answer to you Phil, I don't know. I will be asking, but there is no point in asking that now and as we will have two other areas for all getting together, it's not going to be something we need, just something we want. :-)
