£60 fine? And they want to add points to it too but that's not come in yet.

But they might start finding other points of concern with your bike had you not drawn attention to yourself in the first place...

£60 fine, if you get pulled enough for the small plate, the DVLA with withdraw your registration number and issue you with a Q plate.. not nice for resale value...

Why go so small 9 x 2 is asking for a pull, and then it gives them an excuse to do you for a your race can, dark visor etc etc etc

I asked on BCF (after someone posted in righteous indignation about being hassled by 'the pigs' for his small plate) what the point of them is and nobody could tell me. hovis says it's just for the looks.

I don't really see the point - a nice looking bike is still nice looking with a legal plate on it, why tempt fate?

That's a letterbox plate isn't ?

Almost certain tug followed by a fine, especially as you live in such a densely populated area.

I like to refer to them as c**k plates. You know the people that have them are.

can you put the above into English please?

Roughly translated

I want a small plate so that I dont get zapped by a camera van or a fixed speed camera.

I can think of better ways to get rid of £60!

Braided lines
Heated grips
Curry and beers for two
Lots of miles on nice roads
Bouquet of flowers for the missus
Give it to charity

Get the picture?

What's a Q plate/what's the difference? Google's not being overly helpful here.

A dude I used to work with had one this size, black background and italic lettering. Also naughty cans, black visor etc. He has never been pulled, despite riding with plates like these for over 3 years. (he always changes the plate when he gets a new bike)
He knows the consequences though, if and when he gets a tug for it he has nothing to whinge about.

If thats all you want it for why not ride around with no plate and if you get tugged say it was nicked. If you ride around with a dodgey plate then it's a definate fine......

You'll get a pull and a fine. Especially in England and North Wales.....

Not worth wasting £60 of your hard earned cash on is it??
Once they pull you for that, they'll look over the rest of your bike with a fine tooth comb. Oh look sir, that's a race can - that's another £30 fine on top of the £60 for the plate. Keep it legit, you don't get pulled... or buy a harley, and you can run any plate size you wish... those things and touring bikes never get pulled over for a check - only the sports bikes...

My commuter bike exhaust wakes the dead (handy for filtering), but I run a legit plate on it, and have passed several cop cars stuck in the traffic gridlock whilst filtering. Never been stopped..

What's a Q plate/what's the difference? Google's not being overly helpful here.

From the direct.gov website

A ‘Q’ registration number means:

· the age or identity of the vehicle is not known
· the vehicle may have been rebuilt from old or new parts
· the vehicle may have been imported without proof of the vehicles age
The registration certificate should say why the vehicle has been registered with a ‘Q’ registration number.

The 'Q' shows that the vehicle was either not originally registered in the UK and proof of age was unavailable at registration, or that it has been built using a significant proportion of used parts.

If a vehicle has to be rebuilt, say after an accident and many new or used parts have been used that it calls the identity of the vehicle into question, the vehicle needs to be registered on a 'Q' Plate. This is done through the DVLA. It does not mean that there is anything wrong with the vehicle, just that it's original identity cannot be clarified from the parts it is made from (i.e. from different vehicles). Kit cars usually have a Q registration and this is perfectly normal, but on other vehicles, it suggests that their full history may be difficult to trace.

"Q" numbers are non-transferable, meaning that they must remain with the car. You cannot transfer them to another vehicle, and you cannot purchase another number plate for the 'Q' plated vehicle.

Before you purchase a vehicle with a 'Q' plate, it is very important that you obtain a HPI check to ensure that it is not stolen or ringed and registered correctly with the DVLA.

OUCH! good luck selling that then!
I doubt a small plate will stop the cameras, maybe make it harder for a Van driver to read your plate in time as you go by but in the balance of things seems like a bad trade.

My Girlfriend genuinely lost her plate off her 125, didn't have any issues for the couple of months it took her to replace it but she drove sensibly on a little bike...

But on a bigger sports bike and riding like a loon the cops may well decide you're taking the mickey and take some rather nasty steps.
(not to mention I imagine a lot of cage drivers would be more than happy to phone it in, especially if they see you regularly on a particular route).

why would they give you a q plate ?

I found that too, which is why I asked the question. Doesn't say anything about why they'd give a Q plate to a bike that's been stopped repeatedly for having a small plate. I'm gonna guess that Fizz was incorrect.

If you fail to display your registration mark (and as a small plate doesn't actually count as being a number plate, so that's what you are doing) they will revoke the registration.

You will then be forced to re-register it and it will be a Q-plate that will be registered at that time.

Presumably because they're stuck in traffic and you're away down the road! :p

My baffle'less can is a safety feature...the guy who knocked me off earlier this year said he couldn't see me, with the baffle out, he and people like him are likely to hear me.

The other thing to consider is that since the Gov't increased the fine to £60, the DVLA are VERY keen that each time a ticket is given out, they are told about it. Photo's can be sent direct and revocation notices sent out. It's a big thing appparently.

Times are a-changin'.

I like this idea and it would fool the speed cameras! Cant be blamed if it gets dirty while riding!

why not get an age related plate if they take it off you? theres a guy called Roy Bacon on the Isle Of Wright i think send him a photo of your frame number and engine number and he will give you a certificate of age and you can get an age related plate :P

or the easy way out of it is keep a legal plate and learn how to brake hard for vans/ cameras
