14000 untaxed for playing about with chemicals and other cool lab stuff, you jammy sod. Thats similar to what I get after tax, only I have to work in a stuff office all week (been on here) but pretending to work really hard :(
In all seriousness mate Congratulations, you kick cancer's ass.

I shall write that quote of yours on my fume hood to keep me going when the last 25 experiments have failed
I obviously did my PhD too early, I was on half that when I did mine. Lucky so and so.
Good luck with it though, the first four years are the worst.

Ah yes, everyone thinks they will finish in 3 years. I would have done if it hadn't been for the pesky workshop being a bunch of workshy comedians and making me wait six months for parts :smt021
The obligatory fourth year is spent in penury desperately trying to finish your thesis. Do not get a job before you finish your thesis, it will only end badly. a friend of mine did and never got his phd as a result.
The best thing to do is to live off your other half which I see you already have lined up. :D

LOL!
I'll try my best to support myself, I'll put money away...I promise!
We generally dont have trouble getting the chemicals we need, although there are some things we need special lisences for (my friend wants a compound hydroxybenzotriazole...HOBt...which is apparently quite explosive and therefore requires the uni posess an explosives lisence. I used it at ucl with some varying degree of care, never had a problem!)
I've often wondered, are there any other chemists on this forum?

This man speaks the truth. My "3 year course" went 4 years cos they brought out Oblivion on the PC
My advice: when your stipend runs out, your savings disappear like lightnening, so make sure you are either finished or that you have some other income.
Good luck and have fun Matt!

Well done and the very best of luck. I hope it turns out to be everything you want it to be. :D
Well done matey, spend it wisely. Kawasaki are doing 0% finance on the lovely Versys if you want a good bike.

I'm a biochemist if that counts. Good luck with the research - it's fun some of the time when it works, but frustrating the rest of the time (~90%);) I'm currently writing up my MPhil project which I've been doing alongside my full-time job (yes, I'm a glutton for punishment) and I'm contemplating a PhD but don't know how much it would benefit me career-wise.
Good luck!

Just had a look at the structure - looks similar to trinitrobenzene (iirc). I got locked out of my sixthform lab for making that :smt042
Good luck with the PhD tho

Its no-where near as explosive as TNB (or its similar derivative, TNT)...I honestly cant see what the fuss is!

I do but I dont then want to replace all the fastners and bolts and heel plates because they corrode / rub away :flower::flower:
aaaah something will come up bike-wise

"used as an additive in junk foods"
I must say, I havn't seen a COSHH / MSDS form for water, and have heard that the assesment is somewhat disturbing from many people...
