Headphones, Motorbikes & the Law

Evening all,

Just a quick one to ask - what your thoughts on wearing headphones whilst riding are?

Pretty much the only thing I miss from driving a car (aside maybe from the warmth and lack of the need to get kitted up in the mornings) is being able to listen to music on my journey to and from work. I find I don't really miss it whilst riding - because riding is entertainment enough, but I do find that I'm getting really out of touch with the music I love because I simply don't have the time to listen to new albums etc. any other time!

I find that (depending on what I'm listening to) music can influence the way I drive, often for the worse, which has never worried me because it's always been under control - but perhaps on a bike one might get carried away?

Just wondering what your thoughts / experiences are in this department?

Apologies for the lengthy and general uncoordinated nature of this post - have had a few beers at time of writing...

I have an Autocom system and on long lonely jaunts along the Motorways of Britain , at 4 in the morning , headphones have kept me company with a bit of Music . They don`t distract as much as you think they do and a good rider will stay alert at all times on a bike anyway . I still wear ear plugs as wind noise is damaging to the ears and trying to overcome wind noise with Music is folly to say the least and even more damaging to the hearing . I wouldn`t dream of having music going on a normal day run in town with lots of cars etc around me , but at 4 in the morning , on a practically empty motorway , they have been a boon :)

I have autocom as well and pretty much always ride with music playing, satnav chatting and wife talking as well.

Not had issues with any except when the wife tells you to look at something...

whats wrong with the standard 99 bottles of beer on the wall? why do you have to go and get all fancy? :)

I use my Ipod with sony phontopia headphones, or the autocom. just make sure you set the volume so it doesnt drown out traffic.

They come with 3 different size ear pieces, so you can alter them to suit.

and as far as the law goes with earphone, if you get pulled ask does your personal car have a radio or cd player? there reply yes, you then ask is it ever used while you drive there reply yes, you then simple ask whats the difference then? it does work plus annoys them! :D

i sometime ride listening to my mp3 player or with earplugs in, but when listening to your mp3 player buy earphones which fit into your ear like earplugs they work better i find

find mine bang on. bit quiet when using earplugs but sound quality generally very good.

Duct tape... Although it does still hurt when you're taking your lid off

Check out miscellaneous (chapter 8). You do not have to notify DVLA if you suffer from profound deafness to drive a car or motorcycle. What would be the difference?
