I got offered a job yesterday based in Cardiff :)
I need to fins somewhere to live now, so does anyone know what areas in and arround cardiff to avoid/go for?
Im looking for a cheepish place that isnt in a warzone. Dont mind ex council houses but dont want to be on a rough estate.
any help would be great as I dont know anyone from there to ask for help and wouldnt trust an estate agent!
oh dear
i would be looking outside cardiff, as its either like iraq or mayfair, there is not a lot inbetween
stay away from ely, canton, butetown, grangetown...... theres probably more
the bay is nice, but not cheap
how far are you willing to commute?
are you looking to buy or rent

ideally buy, it will also be my first buy.
Ive been looking outside and north of cardiff, caerphilly, pontypridd and that area. I dont mind abit of a commute, say 30/45mins, if I can get a place that makes it worth while. I want to be on this side of the bridge, but going towards newport is also an option, but again, I have no idea of the area.
newport is worse than cardiff IMO
i would advise a pm to sarah, zombie jesus or jabba as they know more about cardiff
caerphilly is pretty good, and you have 4 org members within 2-3 miles. and only 15-20 mins from cardiff on a bike

any views on pontypridd?
phillys better than ponty (imo)
like all places have the good and bad bits.
and the futher up the vallies you go, the cheaper it is

ponty full of students housing can be shocking quaility or shocking pricewise if in cage can take an age to get into cardiff in the morning but train is ok and bike is fine if you don't mind some highspeed filtering

Good places are Roath, Cathays, Llanishen, Cyncoed, Pontcanna, Thornhill, Lisvane, and possibly the Bay (lots of new flats down there). Avoid Ely, Splott, Riverside, Adamsdown (often estate agents will try to fob you off calling it 'Lower Roath'), Tremorfa, Llanederyn, Llanrumney. Canton and Grangetown, it depends entirely on the area. Some streets can look nice but turn the corner and it's Basra.
The further up the valleys you go, the dodgier the people seem to get :p

thanks guys. I know about the traffic in cardiff, but the bike is my friend :)
I will go and have a look at some places next weekend, try and view as many places as possible to get a feel of the different areas.
I dont want to go too high into the vallies, but I do like the price drops :)
there are some really good fixed rate morgages about, so I think its a good time to be buying.

in a good way though;)

Uncyclopedia writes:
"The railways were built in the 19th century to bring all the slag down to Cardiff from the valleys, and the same holds true today."

Newport right now has lots of 2 bed flats in the sub £100k area with shared equity within walking distance of newport train station.
I have a 1 bed upside down house for £80k with shared equity and loads of goodies thrown in too. Buyers market still and IMO cardiff is over priced although newport is a joke to shop in.
Hovis is right cardiff is either £££££'s or dole land. Look up for houses between newport and cardiff placed called coedkernew i think not sure on spelling. a 10/15 minute commute to the center of cardiff, plenty of new small houses there.

If you need any help my mum is an Estate Agent in Cardiff and she can alway find places if I ask her nicely.
I do live up in the Valleys and as great as the roads are up here and as quiet as it is, the place is crap! As there is no good pubs or eateries and the place is populated (mostly) by inbred morons who's idea of fun is racing along my street in their chav'ed up corsa/fiesta/other-****e-mobile...
Anyway, I hope you enjoy Wales as much as we do, ha ha

thanks for the offer, I will drop you a PM if needs be :)
I have moved my looking more towards Swansea way as I know the city (went to uni there) and like it.

Maybe you should move to Bridgend instead of Cardiff? Or anywhere around there (Llanharan, Pontyclun, etc). Lots of lots of bikers in Bridgend (several big bike stores around there) and about the most decent place halfway between Cardiff and Swansea.

I live in Miskin /pontyclun so i am allowed to be swayed in my outlook
to be honest the cardiff side of the swansea-cardiff route is'nt too bad (porthcawl area may be worth a look)

Hard luck, I wouldn't want to have to work in Abertawe and/or have to do the 50+ motorway miles back and fore all the time...
Depends where you are working most doesn't it? If it is an even split then either is good, but, if it is more Cardiff or Abertawe then pick the one you'll be at more.

The west of Cardiff is quite nice, and there are quiet a few good roads that way

I think you're thinking of Port Toilet.
Hell, Cardiff city centre smells funny sometimes (when Brains are brewing) too.

I am pretty sure everywhere smells of something, just depends if you like it or not.
Plymouth always used to smell of salt to me, London of car fumes, Hull of fish etc
port talbot smells funny,
What ever you do don't move to port talbot - i wokr there (drive an hour each way as well) and its a ****hole. Smells like sluphur, which is down to the steel works (which is where i also work :( )

Don't you like the smell of hydrogen sulfide then?
I been to the oil refinery at Milford Haven and you get that smell there...

Port Toilet is like the opening sequence of Blade Runner - huge smokestacks belching flames over a squalid, hellish city.
I always thought the Brains Brewery smells like a bowl of Shreddies being microwaved.
