New thread to avoid completely derailing TLW's chain lube thread, regarding the photo's here http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?p=2042380

IMPORTANT NOTE: This thread is not a dig at TLW or the mods!. I haven't had any PM's so I suspect the mods concerned are otherwise engaged and perhaps haven't yet presided over it yet, and TLW has said straight away that he is happy to change the thread if the mods aks him to, so there is nobody at fault here, this thread is just discussion to avoid derail of the other thread which is definitely going to happen otherwise. TLW has put warnings at the top of the page and you need to ignore these warnings and scroll down to see the images.

TLW, I don't want to be a prat, but U rating?

Don't want to interpret this wrongly and this question isn't combatant, it's just seeking clarification, so take it at face value. What's confusing?

The pictures wouldn't be allowed in a U rated movie, video game, or any other U rated media that was professionally rated and published. This means that if the site truly is U rated, these pictures wouldn't be allowed either.

Now if the powers that be, decide to allow the photo's that's absolutely fine with me, it's not for me to decide what content the .org should and shouldn't allow, but if that's the case then the site isn't truly U rated, it's 'what U want to allow' rated. Again that's fine by me, I understand the modding of the org is a dictatorship and I've never had a problem with that, nobody forces me to sit down in front of a computer and post on here, and it's one of the nicest forums on the net as a result.

Some of the other discussion points threatening to derail the other thread have been...

TLW, I don't want to be a prat, but U rating? I know you stuck a big red warning in, but if a kid is browsing Daddy's favourites, this big red "Don't look down!" is going to cause them to do exactly that. Those images wouldn't make it into a U rated film or video game. Can you stick 'em on photo bucket and put a link to them or something so they don't just appear on screen?

Without wanting to turn this into a censorship debate I'd say any child not old enough to understand a photo like the ones here would probably be quite capable of finding more objectionable material accidentally via google and it's the parent's responsibility to actually look after their children and ensure they don't...

However...

If the mods think links would be better let me know and I'll change it...

I agree, but but different parents have different ways of doing that, and it's a difficult thing to police unless your going to sit next to them. For many the answer is to install a parental web/content filter and trust that to do it's job, but this site will get thru 'cos it'll be classified U. As you say lets the mods decide and I'll say no more.

For those of us who view the forum upside down, ie most recent post at the top, or have very large screens, the warning doesn't work anyway.

Doesn't on mine. Also it wouldn't cut your fingers off cos it doesn't have any torque, rubbing gently on the clutch.

:smt101 Oh my - that's truly horrible.

Doesn't the blood rush to your head?

;)

No that only happens on other websites :smt087

And what harm could it do? Either teach the poor mite not to touch daddy's/mummy's computer again or not to oil a motorcycle chain with the engine running. I bet the guy in the photos wishes he'd been frightend by these images as a child!

The photo's prove what I've always thought - Common sense just ain't very common.

well it varies from psychological damage that isn't immediately apparent, to just being a bit upset. There's various levels in between such as nightmares and sleep terrors.

This is just some potential effects. I'm not giving an opinion on whether the images should be allowed or not.

could make a claim for that pays quite a bit out.... we are paying 65k out to one girl who witnessed her sister break her ankle while at our ice ring and the poor sister is only getting 45k.......

Right who do i sue those pictures have given me daymares of doing the same!

Do What?

One of the staff Kick her over or something?

Jeez!

no they tripped on the ice!

Why would i want to touch the floor while riding it? Surely my feet would be on the pegs?

OH SWEET JESUS:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Was there no warning signs saying "Ice may be slippery":rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Did I use enough  ?

Oh well, a couple more...

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Out of court I assume?

i broke my collar bone while playing ice hockey does that mean i can claim that from the ice ring? it was two years ago tho

sounds about true there but stopping would be funny to see.

What idiot would put their fingers near a spinning chain anyway? The chain lube I buy comes with a wee tube and sprays a narrow jet of lube so your hand and the spray never need to get nearer than a foot away from the chain.

The ice rink thing is just ridiculous.

My screen res is 1280x1024, so I don't see the red warning anyway, until I scroll down on my mouse wheel, which is the same on my mouse as using the page down key, so I get the first bloody finger and the warning on the same page.

Come on dude

The very first part of my post warned about the images...

If you have your computer set to scroll half a page with the mouse wheel and you didn't want to see them then you shouldn't have scrolled:)

Yep, sorry. I had completely missed that bit. "Moderately graphic" is a matter of opinion though ;)

now we are on about the U-rating, there has been some photos recantly in the burlesque thread which in my opinion are worse than a bit of blood, and i will tell you for why.

up untill now i have said the U-rating was a bit harsh, but i was on the org the other day in work, and the pics in the burseque thread came up, the girl i was working with made a bit of a fuss about it, saying should i be looking at that sort of thing in work?

The one with the keyboard in it has the potential to get you into trouble at work, but somebody in the powers that be would need to be looking for an excuse to have a pop at you, in which case it's actaully got nowt to do with the photo and more to do with the fact the boss doesn't like you. Playing with yourself won't help matters.

Why does us being adults mean it shouldn't it be open for discussion? If somebody gets up to make a coffee while surfing the org this evening and comes back to see their 8 year old wide eyed and white faced looking at the photo's, I don't think they'd agree with that. (anyone who says you shouldn't allow that to happen, or should teach them otherwise, clearly doesn't have kids, they do have a mind of their own when they want to)

And that's an old thread, been there a long time, they are pretty uncomfortable to look at IIRC, but I found the fingers more uncomfortable because fresh blood and severed body parts.

I guess we are not really U rated then.

Like I said, the point of starting the thread was to avoid derail on the other one, not because I'm particularly bothered whether we allow it or not, my son is only two and when he is old enough to surf the web, I'll be blacklisting this site on his parental filter, I don't want him reading everything his Daddy types anyway. Simples...

My wife wouldn't know what "locking your workstation" was, never mind how to do it, and since most home computers are set to log in a user automatically and go straight to the desktop, if people were to lock it, they wouldn't know the password to unlock it again as they haven't used it since the day they took the machine out of the box. To say that you have to lock your workstation at home, just isn't in the real world IMO.

The difference with those is that they are hosted elsewhere. It's still up to the mods on here to decide if they want to allow the link, but the difference is you tube, photobucket, etc will be blocked on most web filters, be they parental or work 'cos the web filter database knows it can't rate the content.

Presumably you may have done things like put gates on your stairs to stop your lad going skiing, plastic blanks in the plugs to stop him electrocuting himself, you don't leave pots / pans on the edge of the stove...

Setting a password so that they can't access the computer without you saying seems like hardly any inconvenience, especially given how concerned you appear to be that he's going to be harmed by something he might find online:confused:

Separate user accounts also don't stop a kid jumping on your account while your out of the room making a coffee.

Separate account is exactly what I will do when my boy is old enough, but that's easy for me to say as an IT guy, my sister and brother in law with a 4 and 6 year old wouldn't have a clue where to start setting up different user accounts on their PC, they have chosen only to allow internet access when directly supervised, and in the next couple of years when the older one starts using it for school, they'll need somebody like me to go and set it up for them.

See above post, my sister has done all the things you suggest, but any parent can fit a stair gate, she needs someone like me to sort out the user accounts/passwords. Since I moved down from Scotland I've already has one relative up there have to take the PC to a repair shop to get her internet access working again, I was the ONLY person she knew that could help her, lots of people don't know anybody.

You are not being "real world" here guys, computers are a mystery to most people, and many, many parents simply don't allow internet access for the kids 'cos they don't know how to control it. Once they have to allow it for school, they get all worried about it.

What certainly doesn't help is questionable content on a site that is supposed to be U rated, how can parents possibly win the game if they are playing to a set of moving goalposts.

Well you should know how to, after all XP asks you if you want to set up other accounts at the beginning anyway. As for walking out the room, same as everything, Windows, L takes less than a second.

Tricky situation from my point of view...

If we enforce it rigidly it leads to complaints of over moderation

If we enforce it with a lighter touch let the odd thing go through, we get are perceived to be being to slack with it.

Another one of those situations that nobody is going to be happy with...

The U rating is the most commonly and most hotly debated subject amongst the mods constantly....

I think Ralph was pretty good to take this to another thread. TLW stop debating silly points about computer security - the question here is about the U rating, not about whether people can work their own computers. Most other sites don't declare that they are U rated and therefore don't have to stick to it. It's one of those things that makes this place different.

Public vote wouldn't work as some members only drop by occasionally, so it wouldn't be a good representation of overall site users. This is why we have mods instead.

Personally I didn't find Bigape's firkin leathers thread nearly as graphic, even if the injuries were more serious.

The BBC wouldn't allow pictures like that. I think they're a pretty good yardstick for what is U rated.

Bri w

Why does the org. have to be responsible for what someone's kids see?

Surely its the responsibilty of the parent. Would you leave a pan bubbling on the edge of the cooker and walk out of the kitchen leaving a toddler behind? Pick any scenario you like, its the parent's responsibility?

If we as adults see something we don't like we have a choice. Come out of the thread, or if we feel it has crossed the bounderies of common decency we can report it.

Please don't turn the place into some sort of PC orientated, sanitised, (read boring) forum.

Guys do you wanna stop baiting people. Ralph brought up a valid point and quite frankly i kinda agree. There are somethings that i dont wanna see and that if i am on the org at work dont think should be about. Yeh yeh people dont have to click on it but then that kinda makes the fact it is a u rated site pointless. It should be here in the first place

-Ralph-
23-09-09, 02:03 PM
Why does the org. have to be responsible for what someone's kids see?

It's because of what Ophic was saying, the site has decided to be U rated because they want it to be open to as many people as possible, and open to people at work. If they start to allow dodgy content then web filters will start automatically blocking the site.

Indeed. The U-rating was in place a long time ago, I don't even know why, I think the original founder of the forum insited on it. So now the mods have to try to keep everything U-rated, whilst trying to allow threads that are informative or interesting. Its a hard job trying to tread a fine line, but if something it is deleted, then just try to remember it will have been at the detriment of some, for the benefit of others. I think stopping someone seeing gore on one forum out of the whole internet is a lot less important than scaring small children or getting someone fired from work for innappropriate web surfing.

Whether this forum remains u-rated I think is a different debate that we could all have possibly.

Fingers with bones coming out of them is sick though. BigApes thread was just bruising and scars, pretty different.

Whether this forum remains u-rated I think is a different debate that we could all have possibly.

I think the modding of the forum as a whole is the reason the site is so successful. There's a reason why I don't have a login for visordown.

Everyone on this thread seems to enjoy coming here and posting because nobody is forcing them to do it, and the forum is accessible from work, from computers that need parental filters, etc, etc. If they think the forum sucks they can go and post elsewhere. I would vote to keep the U rating if the question were asked of me.

I'll just have to lock her out the house if the computer is on mate:smt010

She can't open it... No opposable thumbs you see...

But then she might see through the window:o

Of course if she's outside she might experience reality there too, you just can't win these days...

I think you two are being kinda rude. Ralph had the decency to not litter your thread, but you are not exactly showing his thread any respect.

 men

Fizz, I for one am glad that it is hotly debated amongst mods, it means that you guys care about the forum and it´s content.

TLW- Your point about locking your pc around children is a valid one. Most parents know about parental controls and locking their pcs. If they dont there are enough help tips out there, schools and info when you buy the pc.

However, Ralph brought a subject up aside from the original posts to discuss this, it has been discussed, and it has now been moderated.

End of story no? If people feel this forum is lame then either discuss it openly as Ralph has, or keep quiet. Digg´s at the forum is a little insulting to the good people of the .org who actually like this place.

I would hope Fizz knows hovis and I well enough to know while we differ in opinion, there's no malice intended:smt083

As for other users, it's like life, some will agree and some won't, if you don't like it use the ignore function:cool:

Fine line to draw.Id have said leave it in on the grounds that it is relevant on a bike forum, just like the ferkin leathers pics are relevant on a bike forum, this tipping the balence a bit beyond what would normally be ok.But I respect the decision.Thats what mods are for.

We've removed stuff like that before and been moaned at for being killyjoys, over moderating etc etc...

I will remove those pictures and NO further ones of the burlesque weekend will be posted on this site!

why should i PM you, they did not bother me, i was just comparing those pics to what TLW posted. and saying that your photos may have got me in trouble, which is my fault as i should not be on the net in work. but i dont think TLW photos would have

Nope I was never under that illusion. Just seems like the U rating thing keeps coming up and is discussed then brought up again and again and again... we go round in circles, between being accused of "over modding" then back to "you arent modding enough"

We've tried to find a balance where some fun and banter is acceptable and then that doesnt seem to work either...

I dont want to spend my time on here, going round looking at every post and removing every single swear word and looking for things that somebody could possibly take offense to. If I did that I would have no time to enjoy the forum myself...

If you guys want black and white modding with hard enforcement of the rules with no give and take then thats what we'll do. I dont want to do that, it'll ruin the place IMHO.

I saw them, I didnt actually think there was anything wrong with them, everything that should have been covered up was covered up. I've seen more risque pictures in The Sun newspaper...

What if you let the folks who don't mind viewing things like the burlesque weekend or the chain lube warning have their threads, but enforced a rule whereby if the thread contains anything like that you must put a NSFW warning in the thread title, that way the majority can enjoy a discussion without feeling like they're in the local playschool about to get crucified for farting and people who don't want it are given plenty of warning before they even enter a thread

That policy has been used on several forums I know and it seems to work just fine:cool:

+1

i was just trying to make a point that TLW pics were quite mild, and should have not been removed, as they were also informative.

i think the modding has been pretty good over the last few months, apart from this 1 thread.
