I have only been over it twice and now have no intention of ever going there again.

Jeese, RIP. I really hope it's not through stupidity. Would be a real waste of a life.

oh dear.... what a waste of life..

it isnt such a bad road really. many say its boring dont they Pete... I would hazard a guess that one was riding sensibly and the other probably Rossi 'ing round at 70 ish and came real wide on a double white line bend and slammed straight in to mr sensible doing nothing wrong..

its an OK road but it has some kind of Kudos and gets filled with nobs ..

I think it's a good road but the number of fatalities is worrying. I was concerned it'd be something like that quiff :(

Apparently the pub used to have a map up with a red dot marking all fatal bike crash sites.

I think it's just a road for the wekeend warriors to be honest. Its reputation attracts the 'wrong' kind of rider which in turn attracts the police. Its on my door step so I have ridden it quite a few times (obviously I am now the 'wrong kind of rider! ;) ), but there are far nicer roads within spitting distance of the Cat.

The food at the pub is ridiculously expensive too.

Agree with that there's a brilliant one like 10 minutes away from the maclesfield end.

Some roads I would steer well clear of. Cat an fiddle is one of them. Around sussex, I am wary of bikers on roads to popular bike meets, like bury hill and box hill. I keep well over.

The road is a road, not a race track. I don;t care if your GSXR1000 resembles a world superbike. Its not a world superbike race. Ride sensibly and consider other road users

TBH it wouldn't be a bad thing if bikes kept off that road. I used to live in Cheshire many moons ago and rode it regularly (remember getting caught in a blizzard one March day), but that was long before the era of the born again brigade. Some bikers are just statistics waiting to be recorded.

It's unfortunate that there are so few roads of this type in England (at least), so they tend to attract the worst behaviour.

I took a trip down to the Alps a couple of weeks back on the trusty Deauville, did some of the famour Tour de France passes, Cols de la Madeleine, Glandon/Croix de Fer, Telegraphe/Galibier, the little col de Sarenne from the top of Alpe d'Huez. Then rode back up the super little D911 from St. Pierre d'Albigny towards Rumilly. All stunningly fabulous roads, and virtually no traffic, no need to push it anywhere for "the buzz" because there's another 50km of the same stuff ahead. Any one of the Alpine roads puts the C&F in the shade, and yes there are plenty of bikers (and cyclists!) but you don't seem to get the same attitude that you do back here.

Sad anyway. RIP

The BBC news report says the accident happened at 16:50.

I was at the Cat (the pub) yesterday and my phone said 16:36. I spend about five minutes stretching my legs and then got back on and rode down to Macc.

I did notice on the way down that no one was behind me, usually there's someone on something faster trying to overtake, I thought it was strange at the time.

By the time I got to the Silk Rd in Macc, a traff poll was tearing the opposite way.

I think I was probably the last person to come down the road before the crash.

Just read the M.E.N. story it says it was near Macc forest.

When I was there I had to pull to the left a bit for a bike that went for an overtake and hadn't seen me. It wasn't close, but it was close to being close if you know what I mean.

All I remember, I think, was that it was a red and black sportsbike. M.E.N. says red Honda.

Article says police appealing for witnessess.

I'm probably no help but should probably get in touch. What do you guys think?

RIP. I think that there was another fatality this morning on the M4. The bike was a mangled mess (looked as if it had been a BMW GS) and the ambulances weren't going anywhere in a hurry, so it didn't look good.

I'd ring them, your information just might help the crash investigation.

its an OK road but it has some kind of Kudos and gets filled with nobs ..I agree. Didnt see what all the fuss was about to be honest, definitly not a road you should ride quickly on anyway, too many blind corners and the road surface is iffy to say the least.

A waste of a life though as everyone says.

It's unfortunate that there are so few roads of this type in England (at least), so they tend to attract the worst behaviour.

That is exactly the problem, we all tend to know the decent biking roads in our areas, and we tend to ride those above others. This obviously means that bike accidents will be more concentrated on those roads than elsewhere, it also means that the police know where to set up there speed cameras. Stating the obvious I know. We can't win.
The Cat and Fiddle is a great road, not just for biking but for driving too, it is not the road on which to 'push it' as a lot of the bends are deceptive and as has already been said, the road surface isn't perfect. Like ALL roads, it should be treated with respect.

RIP, poor buggar.

I thought it wasn't all that bad TBH when we went on it, and that was only being able to see 25 yards (if that(clouds or fog were blocking our view)) in front of you, on the Peaks ride. And it would be fairly easy to get into a decent rhythm down there.
