I don't think they did Ed, I think it was just a loop from the visitors centre around one of the reserviors.

But I know the road you mean and love it

no, it was coming to the end of the day, so we just went back to the bunkhouse

I take it you went up the Elan Valley then judging by the signpost photo? Did you go on the mountain road to Abertwistyourwristoff? Because that road is amazing, can't wait to bribe Chris into doing it again...ok so it won't take much of a bribe :-D

no see above post.

i like the A44 to aber, its a bit quick, but will need to do the mountin road in question.

i relise you turn left just after the metal bridge, where we stoped, but what then?

Ooops sorry am a bit slow today/most days :-P

If I remember rightly you just keep on following the little narrow twisties passing a couple more dams then take a left at the first fork you come to and carry on all the way to Devil's Bridge. But tis all signposted lol. It's a loooong road though and one you need to be wide awake for  :-D

hovis
28-09-09, 01:28 PM
hmmmm.

i think the 25 mile loop of elen vally is good, but not sure if i would want to do the extra 30 miles to aber on the same type of road, and it was a bit damp on the sunday, and we had "fun" on the A44

anyone fancy a rideout this sat, elen then aber on the mountin road?

Done that run a few times now, up the Elan valley then left after the metal bridge, then just follow that road down through Cwm Ystwyth to Devil's Bridge. If you turn left at Devils Bridge, you follow a B road into Aber for lunch. OR rather than go to Aber, you can turn right at Devils Bridge to get to the A44 about halfway between Aberystwyth and LLangurig for a loop back to Rhayader.

Fair play to our Hovis, he has organised some superb rides, in my mind turning the Surfers into the undisputed leaders in weekend rideouts *cough*

I am certain the next AR will be a great sucess, some fantastic scenary in this area.

Well done Hovis, I knew you had potential all those years ago when you were a whipper-snapper and I met you at Aber.

All hail the new King.

Don't know about that but, how about an old mod?

http://www.outsideleft.com/shrinker465.php?s=i/stars/wellerfeller.jpg&w=465

But seriously as there's no Monkey or Dr Rich any more, and then that Grinch bloke from 'daan-saaath' seized control, and then we had to be put under special measures and an Admin brought in to mod us, I say 'Why not?' Yes, indeed 'Why not?' 'Hovis for moderator I say'. Hand him the keys to the executive washroom, forthwith.

Great Bunkhouse.. really good and highly reccomend its use..

And the lady and man are brilliant.. even to the point of leaving us all there- and me and mady in their house- as we were B and B cos she had to take her hubby hospital at 5am on the sundayas he was ill.. they just left us the keys, and the dogs (4), and the chickens and geese and ducks.. and didnt even question us leaving the money we owed them.. brilliant. it really is a nice place, big pond, ducks. ace views, long walks after a ride out.. a swing in a tree !! and the bunkhouse is real real clean and breakfast is superb. (even the sunday one cooked by Mandy and Mrs Pingi.) ..

I was temtped to do devils bridge, but never done it? is it just left where fizz took the photos at elen?

I'll take you Hovis

That pic above is where I was talking about. Coming towards the camera in the pic, over the metal bridge, up the little twisty bit and take a left at the top (so that would be off to the right of the picture) is the road taking you to Devils and then a cracking set of bends takes you to Aberystwith)

I thought you'd done that??

Sure did one of the best if not the best road in the UK. Tyre melting, knee scuffing, bug eating, warp factor riding. Now thats riding! Just next time Hovis could you book the sun to make an appearance for a few hours?

ps Hovis practically had his knee on the deck with out slider......... proper bike skills.

I remember the invasion of the Valleys and the numerous attempts at doing a reccy, in the end I was the only one to have done a full circuit before the weekend (which I didn't make it to in the end. emergency 21st up north)

I remember one particular attempt saw one of Xans indicators get ripped off, my front hugger nearly come off, something happened to Vickster but can't remember what, all that before even getting to Abergavenny. And then my front sprocket came off south of Aberystwith.

NOOOO, this was a group of orgers in a bunk house near Llangorst?? (VB is that right?) and Squirrel was leading a group dance (changing bulbs, changing bulbs, dig the lawn, dig the lawn) and Hovis was in his boxers, helmet and boot. Little Hovis nearly made an appearance at the end, I think he was trying to do the splits

I think that was the day alex's cbr was hit by a low flying bird and mangled his indicator on way to Abergavenny !?

As for who am I ???

Wow - some really fantastic pics.

Hovis - if you've never done the ride up to Devil's Bridge then it's like not having pudding after dinner - miss one, die one short. It's just fantastic:cool:, the road isn't very wide but it doesn't get much traffic, sheep are the biggest hazard - oh and looking at the scenery. I don't remember a straight bit in the entire 25 mile length, don't do it if you don't like twisties...

Do you really need a whole weekend?

i dont, as its not that far for me, and im happy to do a 200+ mile rideout, as i would throw a bit of the AR route in for good measure, depends who else was intrested, and how far they had to come..... plus the org weekends away are the best:p

Nope my tent and kip bag are now away until next spring.

But I'd be up for a ride from Rhayader up through the valley to Devil's Bridge, turn right A44 to Llanidloes, turn left onto the road past Clywedog, left onto the mountain road to Mach, then on to Aberdyfi, Tywyn, up to Dolgellau and back.

That's a nice ride, and easily do-able in a day.

Well, back on topic.

Apart from pics which are similar to those already posted, we took these from the mountain road overlooking Hay.
