I was helping my grandson with his maths homework last night and his mother had an argument with the teacher this morning. Can you let me know what you think the answer is and how you achieved the answer
Facts: In my book there are 510 pages. The book has 10 equal chapters,
Question : What page does chapter 9 start on ?
Would really appreciate your thoughts.

i get 409.
510 divided by 10 = 51, easy. 8 chapters before the start of chapter 9, so 8 x 51 and then add one for the page that chapter 9 starts on.
Am i right? Do i win?
Shouldn't this be in Idle Banter?
my thoughts are............ why is this in Bikes - Talk & Issues?

First page of the book is the title page and un-numbered?

First page of the book is the title page and un-numbered?
think that sums it up
madness

think that sums it up
But, if the first page is the title page, that leaves 509 pages for the chapters, which cannot make 10 equal chapters.
you say 409 but write it out chapter by chapter
1-51
52-103
and it dont work out
except 52-103 (inclusive) is 52 pages, and is the same mistake being made for the later chapters?
My list is:
1. 1-51
2. 52-102
3. 103-153
4. 154-204
5. 205-255
6. 256-306
7. 307-357
8. 358-408
9. 409-459
10. 460-510
So first page of Chapter 9 is page 409. Q.E.D.:)

I would wait for the dvd, it's easier.

+1
you say 409 but write it out chapter by chapter
1-51
52-103

that will be why then.....
you've added a page. You added 51 to 52, when 52 is the first page of that chapter. if you add 52 (the first page of the chapter) to 50 (number of remaining pages in the chapter) it comes to 102, not 103

Wouldn't even want to attempt it - I have dyscalculia :(
I would say 409 too...there is no page zero...

I got 408. Each chapter is 51 pages long so chapter 9 must start 102 pages before the end. Right?
Wrong, it's 409 :-)

seconded,,
this is why in middle school I actually got the lowest maths challenge score in england because of questions like this...
In the real world you'd just open the book and have a look.
What a pointless question.

And its 409,unless we are talking about a Xong Du workshop manual. In this case the pages will be numbered vertically and it will be written in pictures. You wont find any chapters apart from in the Hells Angels appendix.

TheShed; what did your grandson put down as the answer? What did the teacher was was incorrect?
Did he write down his thinking to show his train of thought, or say his train of thought?
Did the teacher just tell him he's wrong with no explanation?

I calculated it the same way (before I read your answer) and also got 409.

It isnt 51pages in each chapter. I get every chapter is 50pages long (you start at 1 and contiune with a difference of 50 for each chapter) 51-1 = 50, 102-52=50, 153-103 = 50 etc you still end up with 409 as the first page in Chapter 9, see list below.
1. 1-51
2. 52-102
3. 103-153
4. 154-204
5. 205-255
6. 256-306
7. 307-357
8. 358-408
9. 409-459
10. 460-510

Oh and by the way the reason this is in the biking section is because that is what the teacher was told

OMG this question was given to an 8 year old?! No wonder he needed help answering it :smt102
And on that note - sorry bit of a derail - but why do parents have the job of helping kids do their homework? Surely it is the teacher's job to teach the kids and then the kids go home armed with the knowledge that they need to do the homework to consolidate what the teacher has taught them - my parents never helped me to do my homework and I didn't very often have to help my kids with their homework - they did it themselves and if they couldn't do it and I had to help then as far as I was concerned the teacher hadn't done their job properly!

Some kids can do this after being shown once and others need more practice and support. There's nothing that difficult about this question really, its basic maths. Judging by some of the homework that my 8 year old daughter brings home this is fairly typical.
The teacher ought to be able to explain. It's not good enough to say that she didn't set the question, that''s a complete abdication of responsibility, she should work it out and explain, isn't that what teachers are supposed to do? Isn't that what they're paid for?

I agree with that but then it all depends on how they are approached, if I was jumped on at the school gate on the way into work its entirely possible that I might go a little defensive when challenged.

Then the school should be the one's giving the practice and support - not parents - certainly in my case I would not have been able to help with Maths! (although I'd be ok with Literacy) and lets face it some parents would not be able to help with either!
IMO homework should be for the children not the parents
