View Full Version : Hovis, the Cardiff Half Marathon

Well peeps,

I have recently got off the phone with the good people at Channel 4.

They can't promise to get anything organised as yet, but will be in communication with me over the next 10 days to see if they can fit something in to the programme on Sunday 18th giving coverage of the Cardiff Half Marathon. They have been incredibly touched and suprised at the number of messages on Lilys RIP thread and by the total now raised for Velindre Cancer Care and I will communicate with Lily over their involvement as well.

I will update this post as I recieve news.

One thing that they did mention was the possibility of having a group of us there in support. One large group all wearing one colour (yellow of course) would make for fantastic tv (I expected nothing less than for them to consider that) and so my question is:-

Would anyone be prepared to go to Cardiff on the 18th and support our fallen friend in his support of this very deserving charity???

-Also I emailed the organiser's of the half marathon last night and explained what has happened. I also spoke of how the fund raising had gone from just over 200 to over 1000 in just under 24 hours since we found out.
I should hear back from them today (hopefully) I requested if somebody could run in his name or could a group of us share the distance to complete the run in his name. As soon as i have a reply.... I will post it on here!

Didn't he want to run it in that godawful bananaman costume? Seems only fitting that whoever runs the marathon does so in that costume!

Reading between the lines, it has yet to be confirmed that this can be done. Can't see 'em saying "No" though

I'd like that, seems fitting that somebody almost as bonkers as Hovis was would run in his place

Right guys, I have had a few PMs of people wanting to run for Hovis, so we will wait for a few things to happen and then we can come to some decision on that. We need to wait for:-

1. Hovis' mum and family to give their permission, I feel it would be wrong to arrange this and do it without their approval
2. Velindre Cancer Centre organised Hovis' entry, so we need to hear from them if someone can run in his place, and if so, how many.

Hopefully, the support will be there and whether we have one runner or many, I think it would be fabulous to have a large contingent in yellow on the start/finish line to drum up support and cheer on our runner(s) on the ground and our favourite runner in the sky!!!

I am writing this now as my head has been a little fuzzy. I just read a PM on facebook that I had off Hovis AGES ago about running in which he mentioned FIL as being a massive massive support to him, so if only one person is able to run in his place, I think maybe Foxy should be the one. I know how very dearly she wants to do it and will even wear the costume, so just throwing that out there.

Foxy, if you add me on facebook (cheryl bray) and PM me, I'll send you a copy of that message xxx

I'll chuck my name in the hat to run for him. I'd nominate myself because I'm a a member of the taffia and I've known him a while and rode a lot of miles with him over the years and plus I came up with the idea first (http://forums.sv650.org/showpost.php?p=2052828&postcount=68) ;). A though a group of runners would be cool too.

Ok hun....we were talking about this yesterday and a few of us have had PMs from different people. I don't think any one person therefore can make the decision if we are only allowed to have one runner, so I'll leave it to you runners to decide.

Hope you're ok Chris x

That's fine. I'm not going to be fussy if someone else is chosen though I sort of feel like I'm obliged to make my case if you understand. I've got more links in south wales and I'd try and get more sponsors from my thai boxing gym, university and a couple of other communities I'm involved with.

It was on the 8th Jan that Hovis first decided to run the Cardiff Half. He had trained and looked forward to it for so long, set a target time and overcome injury throughout the year to do it.

It doesn't matter who runs at as long as the line is crossed for Hovis.

It would be great if a group could run it but if not wheels are in motion in the Running Thread as suggested by stewie to do a group run next year as legacy to Hovis.

When we have heard from the family and had their approval, they may be organising this themselves and if we get that, it needs to all be done through Velindre Cancer Centre as well, so hang tight buddy :-)

All

I have been in contact with some of Hovis's very close friends and the subject of the Cardiff Half came up. One of the guys who ran many runs with Hovis is going to run this on his behalf. He is a seasoned marathon runner and a policeman.

Our honour to Hovis, will be in our biking. The running clubs honour to Hovis is a 5km run they are doing this weekend and then the Cardiff Half.

If you still wish to support the runner Steve on the day, then that is fine. However, having had a good conversation with them, I feel that this is something they need to do for him and as a group on there own.

I know this won't be the news some of you want to hear and apologies for that. However it is the wish of the running part of his life and so I will leave it at that.

Morning guys.

In response to the post by Drew above and having had a few conversations on the subject, am I cancelling this event. Only as a group thing organised by the forum, not on a personal level.

Something that has become clear over the last few days and really hit home at the Taffia meet on Wednesday is that Hovis had very different relationships with the different people and groups of people in his life. For us and the forum, he was an incredible character, always with a smile and giving smiles and laughs and well, most of you have known him longer than me, so don't need me telling you what he was like.

So, in light of the fact that we, as a forum of friends will be doing many of our own events in tribute to Hovis over the coming months and no doubt, something being carried on permanently; I would like to stay away from the Cardiff Half and leave it as an event that allows his group of running friends to go through as part of their own process of grief and in their own tribute to their friend.

This is not me saying that people shouldn't go to cardiff for it, just saying that I won't be, stating my reasons and saying that I and I know others involved feel that we would be paying better respects by allowing his running friends this opportunity.

Of course, anyone wanting to carry on and go on their own in support of the run has every right to do so and I think it would be a lovely thing to do. It is a personal choice issue, I am stating my personal choice and that of a few others closer to David than me and saying that I really do not feel it would be appropriate to do this as a forum now that we know what is happening.

OK.....serious stuff out the way because I really hope no-one takes that the wrong way........

Our house will still be open to all next weekend. I think we should go ahead with all getting together here and dressing up/being daft/ overpowering Stretchie to get him tranny'd up and have a bloody good weekend in honour of our friend.

It will be sad, it will be hard, but there will be laughs, tears, hugs and memories in abundance and judging by how much we were all helped through everything sinking in on Sunday by being together, it will be well worth going ahead with the weekend here.

We have a big TV to watch the Half Marathon on and we can cheer and salute all the way.

Again, hope this isn't taken the wrong way

Me and Drew had the same conversation yesterday when we found out his running club were organising something.

Me both made the comment that we felt we should leave them to that part of his life as they are the ones that shared it with him......

However drew and lily will still be at yours next weekend..... can not get rid of us that easy (if that is ok) :)

Cheryl, thank you for putting that. Spot on.

If anyone has any questions on this and why we have decided to back away, then by all means PM me. I was the one who has been speaking to the running clubs. From the way they were feeling and talking, I felt it would be more respectful for them to do this as a group, without a big song and dance.

They have said that any one who wishes to support them is more than welcome to do so. Hence why if people would like to go, then please go because you wish to support the runners who are running for Hovie's brilliant cause.

If they are having there own 'two footed' rideout for him then I'm not getting in the way.

If anyone has any questions on this and why we have decided to back away, then by all means PM me

Just to clear up some confusion, that's not to say we have decided that this is the collective .orgs response, it's just ours after speaking to some of his other mates.

I think this is wise.

As you say his running friends want to do their bit for Hovis doing the thing they shared together. I would hate for the ORG to overshadow what the running club are doing for him.

The ORG will do our bit at a later date doing what we shared with Hovis.

I am sure that those who want to go for personal reasons will still go and hats off to them.

I am looking forward to seeing a few of you at the Gruntystretch residence. :smt023

Respectfully and eloquently put.

Now why don't you guys stop worrying about everyone else, and take some time for yourselves. Miss Moss's orders!

I'm going to lock this now, I personally felt like it was something that I didnt want to attend. Seems to me that everybody understands why an whats been done.

If they guys from the running club read this I am sure I will not be the only one sending my best wishes to them for the Cardiff Half Marathon.

Dont forget if you want to do something in conjunction with it, then you can always make a donation to Hovis' sponship fund, theres a sticky thread at the top of IB with a link in it that you can donate via

Cheers
