I took the datatool system 3 off my bike as it was a pain in the a$$.
lock it up well and lock it to something.
If someone wants to take your bike, they will.
You just have to try and slow them down.
laa laa laa
everyone will have their own opinion on alarms and security, many people will tell you that A is not worth it over B
check with insurance what cost would be for bike with/without alarm/chain etc..
then work out what is worth it for you
people who say its not worth having an alarm are the ones who live out of town, as many times its the only way to have a fairly new bike in the city.

i have a cat 1 immob 4 sale
i have a cat 1 immob 4 sale
its a cat 2 (if your talking about the one in your sig)

also, most insurers will only accept an alarm that has been installed by an aproved installer
Alarms...main use is as a deterrent! But like someone said....if someone wants to steal a bike, they will.

TSM - thanks a lot for ignoring my questions in the other thread on alarms!
did you turn up, no, whichever way you wont get the info from me now
TSM - you were willing to share the info with me which I appreciated and I asked you about the Soho meet but you ignored my posts which I found quite rude. I was free and able to meet you. I took you ignoring my posts personally. In my comment above, I was just expressing this...
Apologies - I have edited
I have an Acumen Cat 1 alarm which was fitted to my k4 when I got it, whilst it was great when I first had the bike, it has developed a fault and I have disabled it now - I use a ground anchor and disk lock while my bike is in a (padlocked) garage, and intend to buy another chain and add that to the disc lock I always use when parking outside somewhere.
Acumen have provided some very good support to me, and I'm hoping they'll send me a diode to prevent the "hotwire" signal that's coming from my indicators and making the bike think it's being nicked!

sorry you're right TSM!
My current datatool is cat 1, got mixed up.
As for whether they'll pay off - up to you to work out.... as tsm says.

totaly agre! if you want a superbike (r1,busa,ducatti) parked in a builtup area then most insurers wont touch you without an alarm fitted, fair dos but i posted my opion based on his avatar, a curvy sv as imho a chain or disklock or even both would be more effective!

I wouldnt bother fitting an imobiliser to cookie monster either...;)
Yes an alarm and immobiliser will save you money on insurance.
But no, It wont save your bike from being taken if someone really wants it.
The best form of security (in my opinion) is still to lock it down to something heavy.

Only reason I ask is because I've traded in my SV for a ZX6R and thought I should have one but was looking at the Datatool S4 but at £250 fitted and £0 discount on my quote TPFT off £244 with 1 yrs no claims it would be more of a piece of mind thing. :smt075

If it gives you £0 discount thats weird because they usually do.
You have to weigh up how often are you likely to leave it anywhere to get taken?
how secure is your garage etc.
£250 is a lot of cash for no discount.

I had a datatool alarm on my first bike. It was a complete PITA and drained the battery very quickly (I commuted daily and it still killed the battery). it also kept texting me to tell me someone was nicking my bike when infact a car had driven past it or something - most annoying. I have heard better reviews about Meta alarm systems. Personally, if I was going to fit an alarm, i'd buy one off ebay and sod the insurance discount (I live in a lower insurance area than the London folk). so long as it makes a noise when some d$ckhead tried to nick it that is good enough for me.
So in short, i'd go for a Meta going on past reviews if you want an alarm. i had a cat2 imobiliser on my SV (datatool) and that was fine - easy to use and far less annoying than an alarm.

that sounds like a duff battery rather than alarm or it was badly wired in
2 years of, day to day travel on my sv, lights on, 4 miles round trip, no probs at all
still have no probs with it, my sv has not been used in 3 weeks and it still started on the button with headlights on, so no alarm does not cause the issues in all "it drained my battery" situations

Just to ***** it up a little more;
Not had an insurer quote me yest (had a lot of quotes) who insisted on it being fitted by a pro/dealer/factory etc.
I've been getting more than a £0 discount

Had my bike for 3 weeks - Datatool System 3 is working fine. Parked on road, no false alarms, picked up a spare fob for £20 off fleabay and programmed it in myself. Only problem is it arming itself after 30 seconds - just have to be super gentle with fuel cap or keep turning it off.
Hoping that and a disklock will keep it safe 8-[. My house mate should be fetching his bandit back anyway so can lock to that as well.

You can put it into service mode whilst you fill up. Should say in the manual some where, from memory you hold down one of the buttons for 2 seconds, but its been a while since I had mine. I'm sure someone in this thread will be able to tell you.I was always forgetting to do it mind, then the alarm would go off.
for the acumen system, service mode is the same as diagnostic mode, you hold the arm button for a few seconds, the bike squeaks and it basically disables the alarm, then press the arm key again to come out of it.
Guessing from what you say about the datatool system that they operate in a similar manner
