View Full Version : Is there a problem with this C+S set?
Now I am almost convinced this is a Hitler post that I must have missed but I saw these pics on another website so had to share just in case - I have no other details other than someone was still riding it and it appears to be a curvy SV...
Looks ok to me?! :smt103

thats increadable, cant imagine how much effort woulda been needed to get it to go in the first place! looks like hes forgotten the spacer or has put them both on the other side of the wheel, but thats amazing
You'd think they would have noticed the noise it made, or the sluggish performance...Sorry, more sluggish than usual... was it a girl? or was it a septic?

OH MY GOD!
Why would you do that?? This has got to be a future candidate for the Darwin awards.. The only reason I can think of why someone would do this is to put in a wider section tyre maybe??
If it was just a spacer thng surley you'd think. "Well it was ok when I took the wheel out, and now I can't put it back in because someone has moved the swing arm over and the brake caliper too..."
Someone's put the YTS lad onto this at the local bike garage haevn't they

Someone has cut that out mate. That's an angle grinder job (or a REALLY long dremel job)

Looks like the cush drive assembly is loose, you can see the cush rubbers. Someone has forgotten to do up the nuts or they have failed.
He needs to lube his chain to, should have fitted a Scottoiler! :smt098 :smt043

Oh, and it's not a BlackBird either
; )
A shiny English pound says it's missing the spacer on the left side of the wheel. The wheel can then move on the axel to have contact, and given the lack of force pinching the hub in, the sprocket carrier is free to move out exposing the cush drive.
But I'm stunned that the noise / knocking didn't warrant attention.

That's mad. I reckon damage in use rather than deliberate though. I reckon they forgot the spacer.

Nope that is the Nuts on the Sprocket carrier wearing through , you can see it has worn in a circular pattern , if it was gradual , they wouldn`t notice much difference to be honest and Aluminium is so soft that the damage could have been done in minutes . Imagine leaving a tyre fitting place and hearing a funny noise as you are on the motorway , you decide to investigate the swooshing noise you hear from the back when you get home , by the time you are in the driveway , it`s borroxed .
The sprocket carrier has worked it`s way over millimetre by millimetre , eventually wearing through the swingarm .

i didnt even know what was wrong until dave pointed out the chain was rubbing on the swing arm - i didnt even know what the second picture was...
...and no, just because my c+S is fooked, its not mine!!

I realised after reading LuckyPants' post about the crush rubbers but thought I'd just keep me big mouth shut and hope no one picked me up on it.
You like my new lid by the way??

It`s ok in a "Grand Army of the Galactic Empire" kind of way
how the hell would you not notice that while riding, it must have sounded like a machine gun.

Afterall, if it does fail....
...just one less curvy in the world :)

I suppose with chain alignment and all , would that be as far as it would have worn through , or do you reckon it could have gotten far enough to cause a collapse ?

Nice but it has to be a setup, wear marks are'nt consistent with a clockwise motion and there appears to be no damage to the nuts/bolts, imho anyway.

The nuts and bolts are much harder than the Ally of the Swingarm so would not necessarily show any damage , you can`t actually see the edges of the nut/bolt that is hitting against the Ally anyway , and coming from an engineers viewpoint the wear is consistent with there being small slivers of Ally on the exit part of the bolts path of travel . Look at the picture where you can see the inner part of the swingarm , on the right hand side/lower portion shows a sliver of Ally , there may not have been one on the exit/upper part as the owner may have cleaned it to show off their handywork and the sliver can easily be removed with a caught cloth if worn through fine enough .
There is also a ground down type of Aluminium paste which has gone dark against the sprocket in the first picture , this is typical of Aluminium that has been ground down roughly by another component .
What has probably halted this from being a total disater is the chain tensioner inside the swingarm , with it being made of a Mild Steel variant it has proven to be harder to wear through which has then produced a more polished looking circle in the centre around the tensioner .
Thankfully the swingarm's thicker than the studs and nuts are long.
I've seen a nut work loose on a rear sprocket stud and contact the swingarm, thankfully it was noticed before it got much worse but the damage was similar, but less extensive.
In mythbuster's style I'd call this confirmed :D

The rear axle nut looks a little light on torque, too!
what about....
the spacer between the sprocket carrier and wheel bearing
with it missing, you would do up the wheel thinking all was good, until the sprocket bearing failed and it then the wheel moved, all while at speed.
this is the only way i can think that the person could have moved at all in the first place thinking all was ok.

Good morning all.
Collapsed sprocket carrier bearing anyone? I had one similar to that some years ago on an FZR600. The customer actually rode the bike until the rear wheel locked up, as the sprocket nuts jammed against the swinging arm. He claimed not to have noticed anything untoward going on!
I also had a CB500 come in with a collapsed bearing which was so bad the outer of the bearing had disappeared! Again he had ridden the bike until the rear wheel stopped. He said he thought the grinding from the back end was beacuse he had forgotten to lube his chain for a few weeks.
There are some DI@K heads out there aint there! What's worrying is that their on the road with the rest of us.
Cheers.

Just remember to SPEAK UP when you talk to him!
Collapsed sprocket carrier bearing anyone?
This is what i was getting at, but unlikley just that alone would do it, the spacer between the carrier bearing and wheel bearing would have to be missing to make the wheel move sideways.
I've found out who's bike this is (http://www.svrider.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1650905&postcount=54)...
He's on the SV rider site, snowman88 took the photos and went to pick the bike up with him...
He's only just bought the bike and is not responsable for the damage as I read it.
