View Full Version : How often does your radiator fan kick in?

Maybe I'm being paranoid here but my fan on the SV never seems to come on. Even when sat at a level crossings or in traffic the bike's fan never switches on. Is it normal for the bike not to need the fan very often? I don't think it's been on since I bought it in July...

Mine NEVER comes on, its been checked and it still works but it never comes on but then again I don't sit around in traffic for more than a a minute or two any ways

go faster, lol. no it should not come on too often and as long as boiling water is not coming out of it then should all be ok, imo. ps what temp does it get up too should come on at about 94-96 deg

in traffic it comes on, when temp hits 100 degrees, never comes on when on the move

No temperature gauge on my bike. That's why I'm worrying a little because I'm unsure if my bike is overheating or is ok.

Mine doesnt come on till about 101. Its k5 though.
Bike always runs at about 87-92 so i have never had it on while riding.

If u want you can test what temp it comes on at by just running the bike at home.

I had the same dilemma last season with my newly purchased curvy. I shorted the plug to the switch and the fan ran so then took the switch off and tested as described in the Haynes..all tested ok. This season the fan has only come on once whilst in the shed and adjusting the scottoiler. Might be worth doing the same.. if not just for peace of mind.

Mine comes on at 104 then goes off at 98 when stood in traffic.
Normally runs at about 78 when travelling.

Mine comes on only if i'm sitting on the motorway (going round the uk with lots of luggage meant i wasn't filtering) So after a couples of hours riding, then sitting with the engine running. The first time it happened i couldnt work out what the noise was.

Never had my fan come on. It is supposed to come on at about 104, but my bike even sat in Croatian heat never got above 96 IIRC. Usually runs at about 86 in the UK.

My fan comes on in heavy london traffic, but only in little flutters. I have a tep gauge on my bike, fan cuts in at about 100 (just over). And usually only in summer. Dosnt really do it in winter.

There is a little red light on the tachometer that, if your bike did overheat, would come on. if it does, hit the killswitch.

Check your coolant and top up with antifreeze if neccesary. Keep the oil level topped up towards the top line. This will help with keeping the engine cool (oil cools the engine too ya know)

Only when stationary for more than 5mins or so with the engine on, after a long blast, so not that regular!

Neither of my sv fans ever kicked in.

The Daytona kicks in quite a bit as it doesnt like traffic...

Speedplay ..... that the problem with the Daytona ... I could take it off your hands if your desperate ... ;-)

spooky topic just the other day mine came on on the curvy for the first time in the 18 months i'd owned it. No idea of the temp but it had been left standing for a good ten minutes after a run of about an hour.

Well when I got back from uni today I ran the bike on the driveway for a few mins at lowish revs and after about 2 mins the fan came on. First time I have ever heard it but at least I know it now works! :D

My Thundercat and BlackBird fans come on only when town riding, but on both you can FEEL why it should come on, boiled spuds anyone?

Once moving, a steady 15mph+ cools it all fine.

Mine comes on whenever the engine temp reaches 103C (I think) and goes off at 98C...

Isn't very often - bike normally runs at high 80's - low 90's.

I have a sort of related question to engine cooling.

How is it that no matter the air temp, and the speed I ride at / revs I hold for a given speed, the temp will not drop lower than a certain value (about 82)? Is it a simple case of thermodynamic equilibrium, or is there more to it?

Here's another weird one - when doing a constant speed on dual carriageway, I often see my temperature gauge (K5) cycle in a sine-wave between around 79-80 and 86-87. Anyone else noticed this? It's done it since new and seems fine other than that.

yes! i noticed this only the other week after 2 years of having my bike. i assume its always done it. goes from 83-92 and then back down again and up and down and up and down then back down again and up and down and up and down then back down again and up and down and up and down then back down again and up and down and up and down then back down again and up and down and up and down then back down again and up and down and up and down
