What do you think? I think for sure they will go up. But will it be as high as countries like DK (50%) level.... I cant see how we will pay back this debt that has built up and with the impending govermnet change the poloiticians are talking an increase.

This was discussed at some length in this thread http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=130346

The Government already take a huge proportion of GDP in taxes but due to Gorden Brown's massive financial ineptitude (selling of gold reserves at knock down prices, pensions raids, etc etc) we are in massive debt and so they will have to take even more! IMHO they should come clean on tax and put us all on a unified rate (see the other thread I linked to), then folks will see just how much the thieving gits take!

My fear is the Liberals, they plan hikes in Income Tax and NI plus a Local Income Tax.

EDIT: Your poll is ambiguous. Do you mean income taxes will go up to those percentages or they will go up by those percentages?

Brown will promise no increase - anything to stay in.
Others will get a proper look at the books*, say ' ferkinell ' and have no option but to impose savage increases.
* We all know there are massive deficits built up by Brown & Co - the only question is the sheer size of them.

Whoever gets in will have to increase taxes. So get ready! The things that we've all come to expect (NHS, armed forces, roads, public transport etc.) will all continue to deteriorate without an influx of money.

Just a note, since i have been alive, its always been the concensuis that labour were a taxing party and they still are.
I read something last year that over 2500 new taxes had been brought in since 1997, stealth tax that the tories said would happen with labour, happened.
Taxes up, spending up, imigration up, service up? questionable.
Do the right thing at the next general election, get rid of these clowns before we dont have a country left and we have to sell our souls to europe.
Rant over, Phil

800 Bn http://www.economicshelp.org/blog/uk-economy/uk-national-debt/

Can't increase taxes too much or tax revenue WILL drop (tax avoidance becomes more worthwile)

While I would like a single tax rate plus a single basic tax allowance that everyone received whether they were in work or not. That's not going to happen so your poll should distinguish between lower & higher rate tax

balls

Apologies if this isn't the place for naive economic discussion; but what do we (as a country) actually make money on? Steel etc.'s gone so I guess it's just services? But credit & banks are up the ****ter so what else?

UK GDP by industrial sector:

Services Sector - 76.2 per cent of UK GDP
Industry & Manufacturing - 22.8 per cent of UK GDP
Agriculture - 0.9 per cent of UK GDP

Tax as a percentage of GDP reached a percentage of GDP reached 46 per cent as of 2005-2006, according to HM Treasury. So the answer to Demonz poll is definitely 50%
