picking up a new (well used) bike.....?

Hi,

getting a used ZX6R from a dealer they say they will service etc before I pivck it up, but should I give it an oil & filter change so I know there is good quality oil in it and put some injection cleaner in the tank???

What do you do/check when you pick up a new bike?

Ask them what they consider to be a full service. If it has fresh oil in, you should be able to see the oil is somewhat clear in the window (it shouldnt have been run enough to go black, unless of course they didnt change the oil filter or then engine is just so neglected there is a build up of rubbish in there). They should probably provide an invoice for the service too, if only so you have a record of what was done for when you come to service the bike next time around.

See how the bike runs before buying injector cleaner. Maybe fill it up with some super-unleaded (Shell V-Power or similar offerings from other good-brand petrol stations).

If i were picking up a new bike, I'd check fluid levels (oil, water, brake fluid) and check the tyre pressures (someone on here ages ago picked up an RSV privatley, and the tyres were flat...only 10 psi!), and just check things feel correct...handlebars go lock to lock without the engine revs going up, lights all work, and also test the brakes when you ride off to make sure they behaive correctly - if they dont, you can quickly pop back and get anything sorted out

I wouldn't trust previous owner has kept it in good nick, and wouldn't trust a garage to service it properly.

Personally, I'd have negotiated money off for them not servicing it, suppose it depends on whether you want the book stamped and whether there's warranty.

Check brake pads and tyres for wear, not cheap consumables to replace, so worth getting them done within the sale price if you can.

i took the sv to wales after picking her up from the dealer and found that front didnt feel right and then had to ride all the way back, i would of noticed but it was first big bike and i had just had a massive off so i wasnt sure what to expect until i got used to riding again then thought this doesnt feel right.

I wouldn't trust a dealer and would completely strip and service it all myself on getting it home.

Mine came with a service & 3 months warranty from the local dealer - and I had to adjust the chain, wheel alignment, clutch, replace the air filter, oil filter and oil (which was good, coz there wan't enough in anyway), refit the clutch cover to stop the oil running out, bleed the brakes...

A mate of mine bought a Aprillia Mlle rs, from a Large dealer in the stoke area ;), it was fully seviced before delivery,Hmmm, when it arrived was running rough and on closer inspection found out that one of the plugs hadn't been changed!

He then found out a month or so later that it wasn't a R version, but a standard, sunsequently swapped it with a big kick off for a Gixxer thou and a few sweetners thrown in for good measure.

Never trust a stealer...oops dealer ;)

a mixed bag from bikes that I have bought from dealers some were very good and others did not even change oil as part of a "full service"
