View Full Version : I hate Ebay part 2
Blimey I feel like Tara did - an expectant mother.
I have my trusty Honda CBR 125 on ebay and it ends in about 4 hours. After the initial flurry of bids it has stuck at £821 for the last couple of days. I have a reserve on it but it just looks like everyone is sitting on their hands till the last minute. I hate that. It's all about outbidding each other rather than just placing a bid for what they think the bike is worth.
It's winding me up cos I had a buyer last week when it was advertised in Freeads for £1500. They pulled out at the last minute and cos I was peed off with him I stuck it on Ebay. Just hope it gets its moneys worth!!!!!

But if you got it on reserve it will reach what you want surely or not sell?
Ebay for me is getting a bargain and bidding at the last min, many people don't bid before as they are simply bidding up the price otherwise. Ebay is better for buyers than it is for sellers IMHO.
Hope you get what you want for it, it'll be a mad rush at the end dont worry xx

It seems more and more people are sniping things they want rather than bidding themselves during the auction.

i snipe or buy it now-otherwise you show your hand too early
Weird experience today. I put a car on there, a cheap but decent shed with a realistic Buy it now of £300.
Someone used the buy it now within half an hour of the auction going live, had an email and a phone call off them to get the address and they are on their way with cash to pick it up
This is very much not the experience im used to with ebay sales - im half expecting them to either not turn up or turn up with a shotgun and mug me :/
mustnt grumble

Which is the correct way to bid at an auction, surely? Why would you bid early when all that will achieve is raising the price?
Some sellers have very odd ideas about eBay IMO.
Well its got 19 minutes left and is on £990 ....... COME ONE !!!! Grrrrrrr
I sent a complete stanger £100 today with Paypal and I have to wait for them to be honest enough to send it back.. or its gone!
I types in the right Email address for the payment but when it went through it had changed. Paypal don't want to know.
Fingers crossed!
Good luck with the sale!

hi, maybe you shouldnt have publicised your reserve, stops people bidding much more than that amount, maybe sqeeze an extra couple of hundred on last minute bids if they dont know it. hope your sale goes through ok

Using a reserve is a bad idea, it really puts buyers off. If you're really worried about value, use a friend or another ID to put a 'reserve' bid on. Look at the completed auctions to see what equivalent things are going for, if the condition is similar you can expect to get the same, ebay values are pretty consistent that way.
Edit: Looks like yours went for £1220? Looking at the other completed auctions, that was bang on with all the other completed CBR's of similar age. Interesting how all the classified ads want about 30% more than the market value, that goes for most ebay bikes.

I have 2 accounts one on my card and one on my girlfriends if i am selling somthing i bumb the bids up in the last few hours :) he he he .
and this way i dont need to have pay for a reserve price . and can advertise as no reserve because if its not got to what i want in the last few minutes i just put a bid on and win on my girlfriends account . then leave each other feed back.

I assume most people do this kind of thing now.

Nearly always room for negotiation on classifieds - plus the benefit of being able to have a look & buy it wthout it selling while you're on your way. Plus as a seller - no EBAY fees other than the cost of the ad. Plus it stays up for ages. bonus.
so what did it go for?? we are all awaiting in anticipation!!

Good price! Goes to show that lots of people bid at the last minute. The most annoying thing for me is putting stuff for sale & not getting a buyer at all :smt088

Hope you remember to submit the Agreed not to continue with sale form to get back your final value fees ;)

Hi sorry forgot about the thread. Sold for £1120.20 in the end. That's OK but I agree I should have kept the reserve quiet in the end as Im sure it would have gone higher. Had two snipers right at the end. Never mind though cos the should be coming tomorrow so its no hassle.
Gonna miss the old girl. She's been good for me!!

I recently bought an item from ebay and although I was happy with it I did feel I'd paid a bit too much, I checked the bidding history and found that the original bidder was the very same one who rolled up the price in the dying seconds of the bid. That seemed a bit strange - Why bid early if you intend to be there in the dying seconds?. I checked that bidders history and found that they had bid on several other items from the same seller and no bids with anyone else. This sounds like the practice you are advising I complained to ebay and they gave me a £20 voucher (this was roughly the amount I'd overpaid by, don't know how they dealt with the seller, ebay won't tell you.
I'm sure it's a very effective practice but I always check this now so if I bid on your items you'll probably get sussed and I will complain to ebay so perhaps you need to make sure you have plenty of accounts in reserve.
You'd think ebay would have automatic systems in place to check things like this although I guess as long as the cash keeps coming in they don't really care.
I've been pretty dis-satisfied with ebay lately, I don't know if behaviour has changed or if it's the nature of the parts I've been bidding on (motorcycle parts), but I've had so many 'issues' recently. Let's hope that it's not a reflection on motorcyclists.
I also think ebay works better for buyers than the (fee paying) seller and it worries me that the last minute bidding does not allow the seller to get the best price. I think ebay should work differently, as long as there are still bids being cast the auction should stay 'live' and only end when no bids have been cast for a period of time, 30 seconds say, after the intended end time. This is much closer to how a 'real' auction works and ensures that anyone who wants to bid gets plenty of time to bid to their intended maximum so working for the seller as well as the buyer.

This is how it works in NZ. We don't get eBay, but have trademe instead which is pretty much the same thing. If a bid is placed in the last 2 mins of the auction then the auction will automatically extend back to 2 minutes to closing to allow other people to bid/counter-bid. :) Actually works pretty well
I got caught in one bidding war for a bike and it eventually ended about 20 mins later than it was supposed to. Didn't win it which was just as well as by the end it wasn't a great deal anymore! :p

Pretty much the same as ebay - pay to list an item and pay a % of the sale price. The great thing about Trade Me is that it is NZ only and there is a lot less abuse/fraud than ebay. Downside is there is a lot less stuff on there...
