View Full Version : What Tyres To Put On? Sticky Tyres.
Hi Guys, I Have A 02 SV650, My Tyres Are Due For Changing Very Soon (On Wear Markers) Ive Been Doing Some Reading On Tyres & Im Confused On What Tyres To Fit :-( Ok Im After A Good Set Of Sticky Sports Style Tyres, That Have A Soft'ish Compound, I Use My Bike Mostly On Dry Days, Only Done The Odd Trackday & Rarely Use My Bike In The Wet But Sometimes Get Caught Out In The Rain Lol, Im Looking For A Set Of Tyres That U'll Do Around 5000 Miles With A Good Sticky Compound For The Road & For Knee Downs On The Odd TrackDays, Can Anyone Help?? Have Been Looking At Michelin Pilot Power's But have Heard There A Hard Compound Tyre, Cant Seem To Find The Right Tyre For Me :-(
I have Avon Viper Sports on at the moment. Very sticky and have done over 3500 miles (including a track day) but are almost at the wear markers now.

myself also. i'm now onto the new version which is called the VP2, which has a harder compound in the middle for better wear. they're great in the wet too, when temperatures don't get up very high. this is my 2nd front and 3rd rear of this model of tyre. i've been really happy and can't see myself changing.
would agree with the Viper sports. Was very impressed with them on th ZX6R. especially on track, held the lines and gripped like sh*t to a blanket :)

I've had a set of Bridgestone BT016's on for a few months, super grippy but I found they give far too much feedback - I can feel every bump or imperfection in the road surface with them.
The rear's just gone after about 2500 miles, and I'm getting a BT021 put on in it's place today. BT016's are superb for a racetrack, but I'll not be getting them again for road use.

I really like the avon storms, however I've not tried the VP2's.
Has anyone that's used the VP2 tried them after having tried the storms?
Thinking of replacing the storms with storms for the winter wetness then moving onto the vp2 for my next set.

You arent going to find a sports sticky tyre that will give the the tyre life you are after. Just isnt going to happen.
You either get sticky with good grip and short lifespan or less sticky with more life span.
You wont get a tyre that will give both.
Loose your fixation for sticky sports rubber. If you look at a sport touring tyre it will still give you more grip than you can use on the road and you'll get good life out of the tyre. So thats...

Bridgestone BT021
Avon Storms
Any of those will do what you want. Plus if you do get caught in the rain they'll work well then as wel.
So IMHO pick one of those that fits your budget.
as an aside i know a few people on my other forum that are really liking the Maxxis sprots rubber. cheap as well. My other half has just had them put on her bike and scrubbed them in arround mallory and loved them in.

+1, was thinking the same as I have seen some sports touring tyres not even get to 5000 miles. Depends how spirited you are. FWIW - The Avon Storms for me were good for 6k......not much more though</p>

Err yeah , i destroyed a rear Dunlop roadsmart in less than 4000 miles at the begining of this year.

Dunlop Qualiferers perform brill on Gladius,but got down to legal limit at 4000 even with running bike in. mich.pilot powers seem as good and are lasting longer but that could be with roads being a bit damp n salty lately on the A686.

I keep saying, but nobody seems to be listening, try the Rossos. I really do rate them as a sports road tyre
warm up a lot faster than my previous corsas and corner very well
Whoops, just checked the range and they do not do em in SV size

You'll get 5k out of then, but not a huge amount more, but if you've got a LOT of confidence if your riding ability to get your knee down and push your bike more than most, these are what I would recommend, especially as they keep their heat well even in rain, which means you're fine if you do get caught short.
I've had them on during a track day and they performed brilliantly! Much easier to warm up than the Supercorsa Pros, and much more grip at full lean than Sports Tourer tyres like the Avon Storms.

I Can Really Recommend The Maxxis Supermaxx Tyres. They Are Very Sticky And Also Good Value For Money At £160ish Fitted Ride In Ride Out. :smile:

I've gone to Qualifier RRs - they take a while to get heat in them but once you're there, you're really there. I can't use the whole tyre either without decking my exhaust, which is rather nice.

I can't agree with you there Fizz. I've been using Pilot Power 2CT's for a couple of years now and got over 5000 miles ( including 3 track days ) out of a rear and my current front which is nearly dead has done 6500 and 5 track days. This is on a SV1000S
They are easily good enough for knee downs on the track, even with my diddy legs. My current rear which is also 3 track days old is more worn on the edges than down the middle ( Vee-ed off ? ) showing how well the dual compound works.
Not cheap ( until you consider the life ) but excepitionally good tyres and the mags like them too.

I had a set of those my GSXR, the rear lasted 3500 miles.. the last 500 miles of which were nooo fun at all.
Riding style, roads you ride, what you use the bike for all make a diference. I suspect your probably alot smoother with the throttle than I am, which will no doubt also help to.
I was generalising I realise that :D But I still stand by what I said. To expect to get decent life and stupid amount of grip out a tyre is a bit like asking for the moon on a stick :D IMHO.

I`m running a pair of race take off Pirelli Diablo Supercorsers in SC1 and SC2 compund , they are sticky , get crazy lean angles with them and won`t last very long at all . On the Flipside I have had 2 Avon Storm rears and 1 Front . One rear lasted 6667 miles , the other lasted 7250 and was well past the wear marker and as Square as a briefcase after doing lots of Motorway mileage . My bike was first equipped with Metzeler MeZ 4`s and they did not last long at all , I destroyed the rear in no time at all . They felt awful from the get go and did not inspire confidance , neither did the D202 ? Dunlop I had on the back after that . What I am basically saying in a roundabout way is that the tyre that gave me the best Mileage , the most fun and no dramas whatsoever and was used all the way to the very edge was ............................................ The Avon Storm .

Didn't like Michellin PP 2CT's at all. Standard Qualifiers are good, but the RR's are much nicer.

However the Pirelli UK website (http://www.pirelli.co.uk/web/catalog/moto/moto_catalogo_schedaDescription.page?categoria=/catalog/moto/hypersport/none&vehicleType=MOTO&product_id=91208&uri=/pirellityre/en_GB/browser/xml/catalog/moto/MOTO_MV_DIABLOROSSO_HYP.xml) does not list them in SV sizes. How annoying your New Zealand one does.
Then again not having an SV any more, it doesn't really affect me. Beyond making my recommendations to current SV riders look silly.

It's probably US actually! We won't get those tyres for a few years yet ;) Don't see why they wouldn't get supplied in SV sizes in the UK though? :scratch:
I can't praise the Michelin Pilot Road 2's enough. Great tyre, dual compound. sticky enough for stoopid antics and excellent life.

+1. I think I paid ~£40 for my current set with plenty of tread left. They might not be worth those last few seconds in a race, but I ran them at a track day over the summer and they stuck like poop to a shag carpet. And at that price it doesn't matter if they last a long time.
Probably not the best in very cold or wet weather though - but just ride accordingly.

Nah, I had some dragon SC pros and they were the same, brilliant when warmed up but not much fun when it was hammering it down.

Very true... I was using some Supercorsa Pros commuting through winter last year and bejesus did that get scary at times!!!
(I had plenty of tread left from the summer and was too tight to get them changed until they needed to go) :p
I used Supercorsa Pro's for over a year, (used race tyres in SC1 & SC2 compound) but went off them when I had a big slide on the Cat & Fiddle. I wasn't going fast and this is the problem - they only work well when warm. They therefore encourage you to perhaps ride faster than you should, and in cold weather they are almost impossible to get warm without pushing on real hard.
I'm currently running Avon Viper sports which I like a lot, but am greatly dissapointed that they look like I'm only going to get 3500 to 4000 miles out of them. But I do like them so much I'm considering some of the new dual compound VP2 version.

Might do when I've killed these. But the SV is going to get some more interesting work done on it and the GPZ taking over commuting duty, so maybe I will put something sticky on SV.

I'm considering them now but don't wanna pick them if theyll handle worse and do a lot worse in the wet. Specially as we're going into the wettest bit of the year

They don't look to have as much tread as the storms, charlie reckoned they weren't as good in the wet but were better in the dry.*

i have maxxis sportmaxx on my sv650 well i can say they are pants in the wet :/ not sure if it was because we hadent had rain in the while so was verry greasy or they are just pants, they are good in the dry thogh and brill on the M way (did 260 miles and dident square off at all) found them to be a bit sketchy to day when trying to get my knee down but that could just be because its my first time trying on this bike.
on my MT-03 i have BT21's and can say they are fantastic have had them on a good 3500 miles and look like maybe another 2-4000 miles depends how the "new owner"(when we find one) rides it i have pushed it prety much to its limits and can say they felt more sure footed on the lean and amazingly good in the wet :) plus the rear is dual compound so you get nice stickie sides and a hard center, this was with running 46psi in the rear and 36 in the front. the one big down side is the price :/ about £120 per wheel (cheeper if done at the same time)
