View Full Version : 2010 holiday booked
Mrs B:smt061 will be 50 in June - oops, I'm not allowed :smt018to tell anyone how old she is. But that is very old!
We leave on Eurostar, 1st class, to Paris. Across Paris to Gard Du Lyon, then the overnighter to Rome, via the Alps - 15 hrs so it goes through the Alps in daylight.
1 week in Rome, then back to Paris for a few days.

Ever done Eurostar before?
We went on for the first time this year and it was brill. I found it much more relaxing than flying, especially with the kids
Hope the Alps aren't shrouded in cloud when you pass through them

Not much of a holiday then ;)
I'd like to take the Orient Express or the coast to coast ride on Canadian Pacific

We'd spill the champagne.

I'd agree with you if it was the east coast line outside Corby:p, but this an altogether different experience.
Like Bri says he'll spill the champange & where would he put his caviar sandwiches if he was on the bike

Put the sandwiches in the topbox, wife on the back, then tour the alps in style! Not on a sweaty train :D

Sounds lovely - id be happy with a weekend in a seedy b&b in cromer :-)
Sweaty train?
A 2 berth air conditioned cabin that converts into a day room. A big wide window to sit next to, in T-shirt and shorts with a glass in hand.
Or the view thro' a visor, with sticky helmet and sticky leathers - mmmm tough one.
1145 miles in 18 hours, with someone else doing the driving - mmmm tough one.

Just READ the paperwork...!
Just READ the paperwork...!
good shout!
After reading your thread i made sure she repeated it back - she's got it wrong. We'd have got on the train to two seats for the 15 hours, no 2 berth cabin.
And it wasn't even Cookie's - had that before with them and vowed never to use em again.

Pah you call yourself bikers!!! :smt011
You will be sitting on the train, trying to look through the grubby window, and you'll see the lovely twisty roads, and you'll see a biker cruising down the road having the time of his life. Feeling the heat of the sun, the wind in his face, enjoying the beautiful views (all around!!) and you will think......
"damn I wish I was on the bike....." #-o

yes and when you had got there on the bike you could have gone camping, but instead you have chosen the easy option of living it up in some swish hotel with room service and champagne, lightweights.:)

I hope your trip doesn't clash with the AR, otherwise you'll have to cancel it and slum it in a tent at the AR for a weekend, surrounded by drunken buffoons :p

Fantastic! I took the train to Italy in daylight in July (only to Milan tho), and it was ace. I did it in 3 legs of about 3 hrs each - left London at 7am ans was in Stresa in time to change for diner. You see lots of bits of rural france that are so different from the NW bit that you're used to seing. The bit as you approach the alps is ace - uphill on the TGV at speed makes your ears pop. Then it slows right down to follow along the river valley - sit on the LHS for best view. Very pretty art nouveau stations on the French/swiss border. And if you're passing through Geneva, the views of the lake are stunning.
And
don't forget to get your ticket endorsed by the yellow machine as you enter the platform at Gare de Lyon.
take a few swiss francs in case you need them for the trolley on the swiss leg
furnish your wife with a shawl as the aircon can be a bit brisk

AR is clear but GM3 might be a tough one.
