Just a heads up for those who own cages as well as bikes and, like me, have tasted the bitter earth of the roadside...
Had a conversation with my car insurer this morning on an unrelated matter, the end result of which is that they don't count motorcycle claims in their policy pricing.
I'm faxing them a copy of some documentation showing the vehicle model during the claim and they're going to be giving me a refund of the extra amount the policy cost had I not put the claim on the record*
Great success:cool:
*They're also confirming in writing that they're aware of the claim and that it doesn't affect the policy, to cover my back should I need to make a car claim in the future...

Which insurer?! How come they charged you for it originally?

Admiral is my current broker, although the AA also said they wouldn't take M/C claims into account
They charged me originally because I was under the impression that they take into account all claims you had, and there was no option when taking out the quote to say what type of vehicle you were driving at the time of the incident, or what vehicle the policy you claimed on covered:cool:

Admiral said it's because they don't offer bike insurance, so sounds like it's a case of whether your car insurer can cover bikes, rather than any benevolence...

I’m with Admiral as well. Only started driving a cage this year. When I used the net for quotes I always put down about the time I wrote a Corsa off with my leg, but when I called up to take the quote the guy on the phone told me it needn’t count so took it off, not sure if it saved me money though.
However a week or so after I get a letter from them saying there is a discrepancy between my quotes and policy and I may have to pay extra and such. So I called them up relayed the story and initially got told that as it was an accident on the bike it would count against me. I said fine, if that counts then my 10 years no claims discount will need to be applied to my policy as that is on a bike as well. The chap had to talk to his supervisor before letting me know that they weren’t going to do anything and my policy stands.
The trouble is every insurer treats no claims on cars and bikes differently which really angers me. There are some out there that will just use the fact you claimed against you, but others will let you use your car no claims against your bike. However I’m yet to find one that will let me use my bike no claims against my car and so I have to pay far too much for insurance yet again.

Should have updated that I received my letter and refund earlier this week, £30, not a huge amount but ~10% of my premium and better in my pocket than that shifty sailor type:D

chuffed at that, don't wanna speak to soon (not asked for it in writing yet or took out the quote) but this thread could collectively save the org thousands. maybe worth a sticky.

maybe worth a sticky.
If fizz is watching, how about a new thread with simply a list of brokers who do and don't take bike accidents into account, with a confirmed list where people have actually taken out cover with the company??
Let me know and I'll start it, you can sticky me;)

I've had quotes off about 10 companies and so far admiral are the only ones, elephant may too as I believe they are the same company just different trading names (v possibly wrong though)

Just for completeness, Diamond also fall under the Admiral umbrella, but I don't think they quote for blokes?

Norwich union/aviva count bikes differently
Edit: a very competive quote too (despite her telling me at the start of the phonecall it'd be thousands), just weighing up whether uninsured driver losses cover is worth a couple of hundred £
- I'm thinking not

just on hold waiting for a manager admiral have spent the last 10 minutes dragging their heels about putting it in writing. I've just said I won't buy without so waiting for a manager.

hehe, it's actually worked out slightly cheaper for me to add my (on paper ) lower risk girlfriend.
So far the girl I was talking to has referred to her manager twice and I've had a long discussion with a team leader who's now got me on hold while he speaks to custard services about getting a paper document of them accepting my bike accident declarations sent out by post.

All in all, nearly £1500 down on last years premium, not too bad for a days work:smt020

I'm with admiral. They phoned me up 2 days after I took the policy out to welcome me and ask if everything was ok. Double checked some details and then gave me £12 back as something minor had been left out by me (didn't think it was pertinent!).
As long as they remain competitive, they shall have my custom.

Yup, got shed loads of letters from admiral today (and guess which one I ripped in half whilst trying to fathom the intricate design of an envelope) the letter says something along the lines of "we have not rated you against your previous motorcycle accidents" which I'm sure is proof enough I declared them.
