I've had my Elite now for a bout 2 years I think and it's never missed a beat. Was using it all day yesterday and no problems. Forza 3 got delivered today (3 days early) and as soon as I try to play it, I get the 3 rings of death. This happened with all my other xbox's when new games came out as well. There has to be some kind of link there. My xbox is out of warranty now as well so I git a shiny new game that I can't play. Boooo to Microsoft.

Its easy to fix... I've done mine a couple of times now, as the thermal paste they use is cheap and gives up after a time. Mines had the GPU give up now and I'm not sure at the moment how to fix it, I have some suspect ideas but I need to confirm them.

Dan,

I'll fix it for you for beer tokens if you pay postage.

I've done 10 RRODs and none of them have had any problems since.

any pointers on the DIY route?

Yep, replace the thermal paste and re-secure the x-clamps as they deform allowing the GPU heat sink to move away from the GPU and it over heats.

I might look at that... though as I wasn't 100 sure it was the issue I was worried about wasting cash. I'll have a look at some.

Mine RRODed already, no problem, they fixed it and replaced the DVD drive.

Now I think the DVD drive is wearing out again ALREADY. Or maybe I play too much? ;)

I had this on my xbox which is an early one and ms paid to ship it to germany and repair it and then ship it back.

Not had a problem since.

My brother on the other hand has had the problem in the last week. Ms offered no help even though it is newer then mine was when i had it repaired.

He went out and bought a preowned console and tried it (leaving all the power pack and av cables in) and that was exactly the same. He then tried both consoles with the newly bought power pack and they both work.

Maybe try a m8's power pack 1st before spendin loads repairin/replacing the console.

I've got a RROD Xbox premium which has been flashed if anyone is interested. I'm looking to get rid of it. I bought a core and thats been ok since. No HD, no HDMI cable and no controllers. Comes with power brick and normal tv cables.

you not stealth patching your games ?

DanAbnormal

My Elite was stealth patched by me to 1.6. I took the BenQ drive out and put it in the Arcade but it won't recognise any games. I thought you could swap DVD drives in the different models but apparently not. My Arcade one has a Lite-on drive but I can't seem to flash it. Might just send it off.

Will look at one of those RROD kits off of ebay and see how I go. Cheers.

I also heard that the RROD is not just about the heatsinks and x clamps but about the solder on the motherboard. Over time it bows and then the solder cracks as it's brittle. You can fix it be rehating it but it will always be an issue. Cheap components by MS is all. Shame that this is such a HUGE issue for the Xbox. it must have cost MS a fortune.

Have you tried checking the hidden error code?
Turn the xbox on so the 3 lights are flashing.
Press & HOLD the sync button on the xbox (it's at the front next to the memory card slots)
Whilst this is held press the eject button to get your code. You need to press it 4 times to get four numbers.

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=484726
See "Secondary Error Code" section get the code and compare it to the list higher up. Should help you find the problem.

I did everything to my old xbox 360 and it still didn't work so had to get a new one.

Don't worry about warranty cover, just give MS a hard time on the phone if they refuse to repair for free.

The Sale of Goods Act says that products must be of reasonable quality and fit for purpose, and so you have a statutory right to reject the product at any point if that's not the case. Given that they offer 3 years warranty on new boxes, if yours is unmodified and has failed before that then it's basically a valid argument to say it must be substandard. The ultimate test is to take them to court and although I'm not suggesting you push it that far, you can threaten them that you are giving it some thought if they won't help you.

You'll have to be pretty forceful but keep pushing and you will probably succeed in getting a free repair. Layer on all the other arguments like telling all your friends never to buy an Xbox, buying a PS3 to replace it etc. if you have to.

It worked for me when my son's original Xbox360 went RROD 6 months out of 1 year warranty.

As a 'flasher' I can tell you each xbox has its own key which marries up the drive and the motherboard, so unless you can spoof the key from your lite on onto your ben q your 360's motherboard will not accept it, if you do want to do your Lite On you will need to get an executer connectivity kit and probe (iirc you can get them from xboxscene.com) or alternatively send it my way and will get it sorted for you
