I play guitars and currently have 1 acoustic, 2 electric, 2 electric basses and an acoustic 5-string bass, and I sing a bit as well, and have been known to stray near djembe / cajon / random hand percussion. Back in school (somewhere in the mists of time) I also had a fair crack at cello, and all things sax

Verna, Alto was exactly what I am looking at, but trying to find out make and model to go for I want something that is of good quality and none of the made in China rubbish. Also as I havent played in many years I am trying to find out what grade Reed I now need, but I guess I will have to start back at 1 and see if that is ok for me.

I have a Fender Strat and Peavey Rage amp.
Mr VT has one too.
Neither of us can play. (my guitar teacher hit on me after the second lesson so I only learned a few chords of 'Paranoid' which have now been forgotten).

But I would love to play an instrument, much respect to those who can.
Speedplay promised to help...

Sax sounds wicked , you will have to do a youtube vid when you get it and can play, would be great to see. Good luck chick x

banjo..

Now thats something that I would like to learn to play. But from what I understand theres different types of banjo's and I dont know which is what or where to start.

I taught myself to play guitar, is the Banjo easy / difficult to pick up and just learn yourself as you go along as thats how I like to learn.

Type of banjo depends on the type of music you want to play. I play tenor banjo as I play Irish music. Your best bet is to decide what sort of music you want to play and find a local group/ session/ teacher to seek info from.

As with any intsrument, getting to a basic stage of competancy is fairly easy if you've been shown the basics and implement them correctly (ie dont slip
into bad habits). An understanding of the music you're playing is a big a
factor as anything else. From that stage, getting really good depends on you, how much work you can put in and how good you want to be. I'm not interested in being second best and as such won't say that I play an instrument unless I'm completely happy with my playing. And I'm only happy once I've mastered it.
Lots more people are happy being able to knock out a tune, thats enough for them to enjoy. So have a go, once you've got the basics itsfun playing and noticing how you develop as a musician.

ahhh i see. I dont play it like that, i still widdle  i often find I cant stretch my fingers enough down the bottom end of the fretboard (near the nut)

I would like to learn to play the drums for real, it seems like such a fun past-time...beat the crap out of something (in an artistic way), and for some songs essentially running on the spot (Dyers Eve!!!)

Can't go wrong with either of those AFAIK :) - but have you looked into to hiring with a view to buy? that way if you don't get on with it you can return it after a few months (3 was the minimum where I hired my alto from) or you can pay the balance and buy it - but gives you an idea whether you will get on with it or not :D

btw what style of music do you play?

I like the idea of hiring but really only to find out which model I like most ;) I should imagine though that considering I havent played in over 10 years it´s going to take me at least 6-8 months to get the embouchure back again.

I mainly only played classical on clarinet, but my teacher was forever trying to get me into blues. I think that might be the way to go with Sax, but after such a break I think it will take me a bit of time to be able to be good enough to say I have any sort of style.:smt044

Shouldn't take that long - I only started playing Saxophone 18 months ago (after many years of flute) and my embouchure developed within about 3 months :smt023

Definately get into blues - blues scale is so easy to learn just waffle up and down it and bobs your uncle! I go to a local blues jam - mind you I bought the Tenor for that reason and haven't touched the Alto really since.....just love my tenor soooo much! :smt055 there's a pic of it in my albumn on my profile page :D

Guitar, bass, keyboards and vocals for me.

Bass- there is a difference (at least in approach- I don't use a pick. But then again- sometimes I don't use a pick on the guitar!). :)

Currently engaged in a guitar renovation project (ie get all my current guitars fixed up proper before even considering new ones!).

Dont knock the Chineese stuff, some of it is pretty good quality nowadays. My mate Mike is a Guitar aficinado and he reckons some of the Chinese copies of stuff are not bad, or as bad as they should rightly be for the money, so dont dismiss them

My grandad was mean on the banjo, he was gonna teach me and pass the banjo on to me but he ended up getting alzheimer's. :(

Would love to learn, just so I could sing "when I'm cleaning windows"! 8)

Getting my new instrument on Tues / Wed - can't wait :p

This ones hand made in the UK which I'm told is so much better than the mass market Japanese ones that are about.

Although the improved tone may only be noticable to people with a refined ear, I'm sure it will improve my overall enjoyment.

Will put pics up as oon as it arrives !

Sorry, I forgot to say didn't I !

I got so excited at the thought of the first notes echoing round my home and the thought of it sitting there highly polished in it's box I got carried away. It will be a shame to pick it up and get finger prints on it, but I always think that polishing it and seeing it sitting there gleaming is part of the joy.

Well... here she is!

Isn't she beautiful ? From the moment I first opened the box it was love at first sight. I just coudn't wait until I got home to get my lips around her.

Let me tell you, I wasn't dissapointed.

The deep tone and the slight taste of cutting fluid was about enough to drive a man insane.
Never again will I be content to listen to the Japanese ones like I used to listen to.

I just can't wait until the weekend when we can both sneak into the garage with the bike !

Decided I needed to dress the part for her first public appearance.
