View Full Version : Locking jacket and helmet to the bike
We have already booked a week away for next June to Alsace area of France :D
We were chatting today about locking our jackets and helmets to the bikes. Wondering how any of you have found a good way to do this. Any recommended long and not to thin lock that would be suitable to run through the jacket sleeves? Going to the NEC show so thought i would ask here so i can check out any locks or whatever that anyone may recommend.
There are places like the castle and Mountain of the Monkeys (enclosed park) you just dont want to lug your helmet and jacket around!

Ive got a 12' cable lock that I use to secure Jenns kit and the helmets to the bike.
Rolls up nice and small too.
Something like THESE (http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.jsp?action=detail&fh_secondid=9284229&fh_reftheme=promo_159030003%2cseeall%2c%2f%2fcatal og01%2fen_GB%2fcategories%3C%7B9372015%7D%2fcatego ries%3C%7B9372044%7D%2fcategories%3C%7B9382012%7D&fh_view_size=10&fh_location=%2f%2fcatalog01%2fen_GB%2fcategories%3 C%7B9372015%7D%2fcategories%3C%7B9372044%7D%2fcate gories%3C%7B9382012%7D%2fspecificationsProductType %3dbraided_steel_cables&fh_eds=%C3%9F&fh_refview=lister&ts=1256229460214&isSearch=false) are ideal.
I loop one end through itself to the front wheel, feed all the kit on it and bump it over the bike.

How about a pacsafe?
Wire mesh thing that you can put around your jacket and helmet then attach to the bike.
See here (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Pacsafe-55_W0QQitemZ190337258804QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Spor tingGoods_BackpacksRucksacks_Bags_EH?hash=item2c50 fc1534)

I cut one off a bike when the guy lost his key..
Didnt take long even with the wire cutters on my leatherman tool.
Must have been 2 mins at most.
But if someone sees your kit and wants it bad enough, they will come back with tools anyway.

My OH uses a chain to secure his jacket and helmet to the bike, just watch out for stray dogs though
I think the Masterlock cable is something that may work as i have a Boss disc lock that i can use with it. I will have my Renntec rack attached for the trip so can wrap it round that when not in use.
I just had a look at the Pacsafe website but it looks all a bit fragile to me though they do a few bits just for the bike.
Thanks for suggestions so far guys

Hmm i was hoping i may find a way to lock it all off the floor and somehow have the helmet on the Renntec rack to avoid stray doggy problem :smt002

This might sound daft but myself and others have done this when going to the coast, if there's a supermarket around which has the facility to lock your trolley away whilst you go do other things, we tend to load our kit into a trolley then disappear to the beach, just make sure you note the closing times though. ;)
Don't know if France has the same facilities, might be worth checking out the local amenities on arrival.
Abi.

Good idea in general....the 2 main places we will need to lock stuff to the bikes are the top of 2 remote mountains....one has a castle on top and the other has an enclosed monkey sanctuary so i may have to give that idea a miss :)
if me and the missus go out on the bike we lock the jackets through the sleeves over the riders seat and pass the lock through the frame then lock the helmets on the hooks under the pillion seat

top box for helmets, they are too important
I have a long cheap oxford lock for jackets when I go to brands hatch with my dad. Jackets will bunch up a bit anyway so the chain dosnt have to be too long, as always the shorter the better
