well it seems like my speedo as gone and killed its self i rode home from birmingham in the rain about 45min ago and the speedo was fine perhaps a bit eratic and kept changing the speed like at steady throttle was going from 38-42mph (jumping)
then got home turned the bike off then decided to go to the shop so got on the bike (all seemed fine) then when leaving the shop was folowing a old bloke aparently doing 22mph (felt fsater so was suprised) then dident realy nitice the speed as was in some trafic in the vilage but as i got the the island going in to my estate(new houses) after the island there is a long straight so i 40mph zone but gave it the beans past a merc and it only showed 50mph i was like wtf (8000rpm in 4th) so was like ohh must be playing up but then as i turend in to my road in first ata bout 5500rpm it was only reading 17mph but once again felt faster and at that rpm in generaly doing 27mph (ish)
so i have no idea whats up but the bike was standing in the rain for a good 2 hours so some water maybe got in to the clock or the cable is sticking ? need a new one ?
the cable looks fine althogh there is a zip tie round it so might remove that and see if thats doing any thing, the casing at the bottom of the forks look fine to, so carnt see what the problem is
going to charge the battery see if that helps

Why not?

only have a abba stand and dont have the socket thing to get the wheel off, i can jack it from the exhast but no point if i dont have the bit that slided in to the axel to undo it
mikelcfc

the bit is £20 from main dealer, and take it to a garage, shouldnt cost a great deal to whack the front wheel off, n what not

yeh what i think im going to do is see if it corects it self (just a bit of water in the clock) if not then get them to have a look when i take it in to have the brake lines changed a blead
Just ask a friendly bike shop to drop the front wheel off. Put the bike on the side-stand, get them to loosten the axle so it's nearly out of the threaded leg, then pull the bars on the bike so it's supported on the side-stand and the rear wheel. Get them to finish getting the axle off and drop the wheel for a second. If the speedo rotor is buggered little black plastic bits will drop out when they pull it from the wheel.
30 second check that they won't charge you for if they're nice ;)

i thought someone who asked for advice would take it? especially that of YC who i think knows abit about bikes. go to a Garage and ask them for a hand dropping the front wheel out as neeja says it should be a free service if you ask nicely, they fix my steering lock when it breaks on a regular basis (and i go to main dealer)

^^^ well as i sead i dont have the tools so dont come saying im not taking his advice ........... any was it packed up compleatly to day so went to my dealer and they are having a look to moz for me to see whats the problem they think its the sensor thats gone (£111.00) << i dont think so! As they carnt get it in till tuesday any way i will get one off ebay (used) and get them to fit it or may invest in the axle tool and do it my self
PS mileomiter doset work ether and speedo just reads 0 all of the time

Mileometer just counts the same pulses as the speedo.
I think it is rotor, this is much cheaper than sensor.
they think its the sensor thats gone (£111.00)
No no no no no no no! Don't believe a word they say. It'll be the rotor. It's made of yoghurt-pot strength plastic. If it was the sensor then I doubt you'd have got the funny readings - it probably would have stopped altogether. The low readings you were getting was probably a result of a few of the rotor pegs snapping so it wasn't engaging properly - just enough to turn the sensor drive, but not enough to turn it at the right speed.
The front wheel comes off, little plastic bits come out. Buy new rotor - mine was about £20. Take it back from the dealer and get a 17mm spanner - you'll be able to fit it yourself and avoid an hour's labour (comprised of them making cups of tea and going "Hmm" a lot). Simples!
Edit: YC got here first. Should check the rest of the thread instead of jumping straight from an e-mail ;)

well they are checking it it tomorow i will see what they say then purchase the tool buy a second hand one from ebay (£30 for the whole lot) with 28 day waranty and then do it my self :)
PS can some one tell me where it plugs in as my wires are taped to geather (to make them look neet) so i carnt folow were it goes
the shop is bikersworld daventry so not a stand alone dealer and the one lad thinks its the bit you lot think it is and sead it cost £17 but then there laybor is steep at £50 a hour.
they are going to be fitting my braided lines for me and im suplying all the stuf :) as im having some lines made up for me because the renthals make the lines to short :)

Go to Halfords. Buy one of these (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_17 7537_langId_-1_categoryId_165572). Your brake lines don't need to be fitted professionally - it'll take all of about 5 minutes to fit them, and maybe another 15-20 minutes to bleed the system (if it's your first time doing it).
The ratchet set linked above will be sufficient for almost every general maintenance task short of chain adjustment. At £14.99, if you do one job that would charge an hour's labour (say, for instance, changing brake lines ;)), you've just saved yourself £35 at their rates.
I started doing all my own maintenance a little earlier this year, after graduating from just doing oil+filter changes, chain adjustment etc. It's really not that hard. Get a haynes manual and it'll walk you through everything, and things like brake lines are common sense - you take the old ones off, and put the new ones on in their place, making sure nothing rubs or pinches and the hoses are routed correctly :)
If in doubt, ask for local .orgers to give you a hand - there'll be someone near you who can show you what to do and help you through it. In no time you'll save yourself a fortune in mechanic fees :thumleft:

looks like mine is playing up too. it was reading at 0 then i pulled into garage and wiggled the cable and seems to be working ok. Is there a way the wire connecting to the sensor can be done up or is it a complete unit? sensor and wire?
barwel1992

aparentyl its seperate and just plugs in (google search turned up a parts thing)

spoke to block at dealers and he think my problem could be the rotor as he mentioned they dont sell many sensors infact dont stock them but they do sell the rotor which does go more often. so i think i will pick one of these up and see how i go

Take it to a garage, have them take the front wheel off and you will see its the rotor, mine went in exactly the same way, it was reading strange numbers then stopped, the rotor had turned to dust, it is DEFINATLY the rotor and the rotor only. What I am saying is: GET THE ROTOR!!
barwel1992
24-10-09, 09:40 PM
^^ ok will get the 12mm allen to morrow then get the front off and have a good look if it is the rotor then will just get that :)

You can get the part from a dealership for about the same price for the K3, I did, thanks to a van reversing into the front wheel at low speed

i forgot what time it ended. Think i just put £15. I was only bidding incase when i get the rotor it dont solve it. Yeah i too rung round and got £110 quotes but no where stocks them due to not going to often which makes me think more its just the rotor.

Your better of spending a few quid on tools, be cheaper in the long run. Im using a car jack to lift my bike from under the engine then i took the wheel off, put the axle back in and rested the axle on a piece of wood held up by two axle stands lol. The rear supported on a secondhand paddock.
Cheapo socket set is only £10, jack and stands £30.
barwel1992
26-10-09, 08:12 AM
^^ yup i do have the tools now well the tool lol all i needed was a 12mm hex socket(allen key in a socket) i have a abba stand so can just pivot the bike back and stick the jack under the engine, just thorght that if its the whole thing then i have lost out on a k3 one and would probs have to pay full wack :).
if its only the rotor thats gone then i will be having a few words with the tech at my suki dealer (bikersworld). The youngest lad there sead its probs only the rotor then the old blokes(2) were ohh no no its whole thing ..... and they dident even get the bloody wheel off !!!! so i decided to do it my self and save my self £50 a hour and £110 for the sensor

as long as it dont fall off the stand like mine its easy.
take front wheel axle out. also calipers and the sensor just comes away. The rotor is just a small magnet inside so this pops out. you dont need to take the calipers off but gives better movement.
when puting back just make sure you line the sensor up as theres a notch on the inside of fork

^^ ok cheers well mine will be on a abba stand and a jack sounds easy :)

You can use just jack, lift the engine and lever it over onto sidestand.
