View Full Version : Cardboard/liquid gasket
New engine has no LHS engine case, so am transplanting mine from the dead engine. Unfortunately it needs a new gasket, and I can't get hold of one before Sunday by the looks of things.
So...make a gasket out of cardboard, or would liquid gasket be ok? I'm planning on getting a proper one ASAP, but need the bike running by Monday.

Breakfast cereal packet will be OK I'd have thought
Wouldn't leave it on there for years but it'll get you through until Suzuki get you a proper one

Neeja,
I've found a place that has one in stock.
I'm happy to go get it but only problem is, "will it get to you tomorrow, if sent first class by Royalmail?
Alternatively, I'm guessing special delivery for Saturday might do it but of course will bumb price up.
Or you could check interparcel and see if you can get a Saturday delivery.....
Hopefully , you se this post sooner, trather than later , as I have to leave soon.
Cheers
Ben

Special Delivery Next Day guarantee is currently suspended, planned to be reinstated on Monday
RM say they're "prioritising" SD and Recorded items, tbh I think it's a lottery, we've received our post yesterday and today

Yeah, this has been the problem with delivery :) I think I'll go down the cereal packet route and order one to arrive whenever the post's better. It only has do to 10 miles per day in the meantime, so should be fine.
Cheers guys :)

H'mm ceral packet will be ok, but from my boating engineering days we bought sheets of gasket material and cut out our own. You can get it in various thicknesses.
But the only thing is where to get it from? Engineering surplies I'd guess, it's not the sort of thing you'd get from a motoring shop.
Be bloody careful with liquid gasket should you go that route. Any excess squessed off into the engines internal could block an oil journal etc. Its been the cause of more than a few engines demise!

It certainly was the cause of my mates matchless engine seizure on its way home from the restorers. and the subsequent row about stopped cheques.

A good motor factors ( maybe even Halfrauds ) could well have sheet gasket material. Think I used to get it from Edmunds Walker but that was DECADES ago!
Sure Yorkie Chris would know, but don't buy any old lino off him when he rips his floor up!

Might have to go to a big Halfrauds though, my little shop won't do it.
Maybe a Wilco (if you have them in you part of the world) or Unipart place
Eh, for the cost of buying a sheet of gasket paper (only a few quid, fair enough, but I'm broke after buying the engine), I think I'll stick to the cereal-box cardboard for the rebuild and place an order for an OEM gasket tonight to hopefully receive one by Weds next week.
Thanks for the replies :)

I'd just get some gasket paper and not bother with the genuine unless it leaked.
I get mine from the local motor factors.
