Mrs has just hit someone up the **** in the car, she expected them to move off at the roundabout and they didn't, by the time she had figured this out it was too late. The only damadge to our car is the front no plate is cracked and the bumper is damadged, problem is the mot runs out in next couple of days and the tax as well at the end of the month, seeing as you can't get tax without mot cert would it pass an mot with a damadged no plate?, if not we will have to buy a no plate and get it mot'd befor it goes in to be repaired in the next couple of days in order to allso get tax on it, and then put the damadged plate back on and send the car off to be repaired. hope that made sensce did to me any how, bloody women drivers, lol.

Is it still secure to the car, and legible from 20m?

If its likely to fall off, has had any of the characters made so they could be misinterpreted or excessively deteriorated then it may fail.

Might be worth getting one anyway, it could always be kept as a spare, get one off ebay. There's a shop I always use, 9.99 for a legal plate, no paperwork etc needed and nearly always next day delivery

Halfords will do a plate for about £15; you could always ring the garage doing the MOT and tell them about your situation though.

hi yes the plate is still easily readable and not likely to fall off, does this mean it would pass an mot or would that be up to the individual tester?.

My car once failed an MOT because the front number plate had a crack in it where I touched the tow bar on my dads van when I was parking my car one night. Twas only a small crack to.

For the price of a new number plate I'd get a new one.

Bit of a 'grey area'

All depends on the examiner ...

I would pass it if it was still legible .. but if it has become delaminated or damaged so that the numbers/letters were distorted it would be a fail i'm afraid.

Some testers will fail it if it is damaged in any way ...

At the end of the day it is the tester that has to sign the certificate ..

Is the cost of a new numberplate going to break the bank. Her fault make her pay for it.

And I thought Scotsmen were tight:)

1, i was born in glasgow ;)
2, paying for a no plate is not the problem it's getting one and getting it mot'd befor it goes in to the workshop in the next couple of days and the tax running out on saturday. but if the garage wherever it goes for mot can fit a new plate, ie get one made then problem solved.

KIDDING hence:D Surely you have a local accessory shop that does plates around Nelson. I live in a little town in Essex and we must have half a dozen within 5 miles who will do it while you wait.

Tax it on line - tonight.
Regarding plate, SWMBO put a .303 sized hole in rear plate when parking. Asked tester to replace it even though it was still a pass, but they got a front one!
Yours will be OK.

if the car fails you still get 14 days to rectify the cracked number plate.
