This was a comment about with so many injured servicemen coming back from Afghanistan, we'd have a great Paralympic team.

It wasn't a joke, for the simple reason that it isn't funny. He wouldn't be laughing if it were him.

I suppose he could argue he was just trying to be positive about what was otherwise grim news...?

That said, one respondant, who lost a limb serving his country, said it was bloody funny.

Different strokes etc etc, FWIW I think it's typical Jimmy Carr humour, which I like.

I agree. Life is harsh and its sometimes being able to see the funny side or having a giggle that gets us through.

I remember at my Dad's wake. I was stood at the buffet with my close friend and she commented on somthing on the table being her favourite. I happened to say. "OH yeah, hmmmm, they're to die for!!!" as I said it I realised the circumstances we were in, turned to look at her and burst out laughing. so much that it soon turned to tears.

Laugh, Joke and be Happy!!!!

Most of the people that get upset about certain 'jokes' have actually nothing to do with the 'joke'. Which in itself is a joke.
A joke is a joke that's a joke.
Big deal, who cares, whoopy fookin do, get over it.
Oh and have a laugh.
Puckin jokes, sick of 'em.

I did 14 years in the RAF and still work on an RAF base. I can confirm that the servicemans sense of humour can at times be very "questionable".
Fortunately, I have been lucky enough to avoid serious injury during my service but I can tell you now that if I had been seriously injured I would like to think that I would not throw my teddys out of my cot if somebody passed a "joke" like that around. I would like to think that I could see beyond the initial horror and appreciate that what has happened has happened and that it is time to get on with life.

But then, after all, opinions are like ar5eholes. We all have our own.

I don't find him funny but i don't find the UK any funnier when we all get up in arms about this sorta thing.

Anyone here a lorry driving prositute murderer?

yeah i agree i did 6 years in army and the humour is completely different and something like this would be laughed off. Look at jim davidson alot of the UK cant stand him. But hes always doing things for the forces.
I think its some general people who dont understand this and think it offends.

Anyone who works in a role which puts them at risk or exposes them to the more bizarre sides of life generally develop a black sense of humour. I am sure serving and ex-serving forces, and emergency service personnel will agree with me on this. There are also other professions which use humour as a coping mechanism, its a human thing.

I dont expect those who work in an office to necessarily "get it".

:-k Ponders this one....(not the quote, the whole thread)

Hmmm, doing what I do, we also have a slightly strange/black sense of humour. Sometimes we need to laugh about horrible sights we see and things we mop up in order to deal with it. I can appreciate it will be similar in the Forces and I can also see that the majority will probably find this funny, or at least not be offended by it.

Saying that, I think that perhaps Jimmy Carr was a bit silly to have made the joke. At the end of the day, the actual servicemen who have been injured may "get" the humour and not find it offensive but what about their families?

I know and realise that some people will come away with the comment that, well, it wasn't the family members who were injured/maimed and therefore it's not their right to be offended but if one of my loved ones, either family or friends had something terrible happen to them and I heard someone joke about it, tbh, I think I would get offended and be a bit angry. I think most people would.

There are a time and place for these kindof jokes. Perhaps if Jimmy Carr had been doing a show for serving and ex serving members of the forces, not out in the general public, then this joke would have been recieved quite well.

Its also true,
The paralymic reps have been going round the re-hab centres for a few months now. These are physcially strong competative people who have been injured. To give them a goal and something positive to think about when they wake up its a bloody fantastic idea.

Jimmy Carr is a brilliant comedian, so dry its understandable that some people mistake his comments as cold and arrogant but its like Family guy, once you start to 'get it' you'll realise its brilliance.

Lots of people make a joke about what is a grim situation. Its not that the person is insensitive (not always anyway), its just they feel that maybe a joke will help to dissolve tension i suppose.

Look at the jokes made on here when people have off's and stuff...we know its serious, but a joke helps to dissolve the badness

in anycase, it is a little tasteless, but then how many of us laughed at jokes about michael jackson, or stephen gatley. These two individuals were loved by many

Im on an RAF site, the general consensus is that he actually heard the comment from an injured serviceman at Headley court rehabilation centre, personally I cant stand the the smug **** but he actually supports out troops so it may have been taken the wrong way, incidentally any serving or ex service personnel will tell you that a kind of black humour is often a saftey valve.

Is this, perhaps, a topical 'outrage' instigated by The Sun et al? I missed it all.

If so, that makes me more sick, as it's just mob-provoking hypocrisy that sells papers.

Personally, Jimmy Carr gets right on my t!ts, but I appreciate a good joke and perhaps would have laughed. It's quite a good gag really.

If this joke / comment had been made in a Mess or NAFFI bar the place audience would of been laughing. Sick / Black sense of humour in the forces (keeps you going on times).
He,s also right an old friend of mine is in training for that very event having lost his legs, and knowing him he will do very well.

I'm the only one then who doesn't find it amusing.

I don't care if I'm in a minority of one, and I don't care what anyone else thinks.

It was insensitive and sick. Black humour or not - and black humour is usually having a 'laugh' at someone else's expense - I didn't find it remotely funny.

Anybody who gets offended by comedy to the point of writing letters of complaint should drag their limp-wristed, yellow, left wing, hippy carcasses over to the nearest solid object and batter their heads against it until their brains fall out.

I don't think I've ever met a squaddie who didn't have a far more sick sense of humour than this. When somebody who was the target of this joke finds it offensive, there is a problem*. Until then I hope the complainants balls turn square and fester on the corners.

* This group of people are actually worthy of consideration in my view, one of the very few who are. I think comedians should go out of their way to try to offend everyone else!

Good for you Ed. Humour is a very personal thing - some jokes make some people laugh, some jokes make some people irritated, some jokes some people just don't get. I used to work in equalities and we used to dish out the most near-the-knuckle material, otherwise we'd all take it far too seriously and end up like the PC brigade. Of course, we knew when it was and wasn't appropriate to let loose. Mike says the same about fire station humour.

If only Hovis was here to tell us to get over our ****ing selves and put us all straight:(

Working in an office has nothing to do with it, its simply down to your personal sense of humour.

2 of my favourite Jimmy Carr jokes:

Chernobyl, 25 years and still no superheroes???

How do you make a gay have sex with a woman?

**** in her ****

It's funnier when he does it I'll admit.
