View Full Version : Need a new hobby
the white rabbit

Having sold up my bikes (at least until spring but maybe forever :smt107) I am looking for a new hobby.
Want something to occupy me that doesn't involve faff and too much of a 'need to pre-plan for a huge drain on my time' type thing. That was the problem with trail riding for me, whole weekends and lots of pre- and post- faff.
So looking for something I can pick up and do when I fancy, and maybe that has some element of tinkering related when I fancy an hour or so in the garage.
Thoughts so far....
Fishing, used to do and quite enjoy, so a maybe. Lots of evening fiddling to do with tackle :p
Shooting, again a maybe and I used to enjoy that but its getting pricey (clay shooting) these days and I'll need to get my guns down here from my Dad's etc. Can't really do just when fancy and I don't exactly live right out in country.
Horse riding? Maybe pricey and need to book up etc.
A small boat? Well I live in the right place but there's maintenance and marina fees but endless possibilities for sunday fiddling around I suppose.
Project bike or car? Not very mechanically minded, a fettler and farkler rather than a mechanic. Oh and I get paranoid it will then not work. I had a Triumph Spitfire one time and didn't use it.
Not really into fitness sports (ahem...) and I have zero perseverence so learning a skill isn't really on the cards. And I can't paint/draw/play anything blah...blah... linked to the above, most likely. And due to nature of my work rather not be studying or any such thing.
Any ideas? Needs a winter and summer element as otherwise back to sqaure one in spring or autumn.
What floats your boat that might float mine?
Sensible ideas please, so if amusing make them damn amusing...

Gets soggy if you do it outdoors.
I don't really want a money pit, Stretchie.
Get a cheap kit car / unfinished project...
that'll keep you busy for a few months and when finished you could possibly use it for track days. Or sell it on.
What ever you decide, I'm sure your level headed approch to everything, You'll make the correct Hobby choice in the end. ;-)

I've just started playing darts, that said, it's not really a hobby. But it is bloody cheap, and can be a laugh with my mates, few beers, chuck a few arrows.
Yes, my life is not that entertaining.

Fishing has that certain escape from all the other stuff that fiddling in the garage also has. And its pretty devoid of faff.

Buy a cheap restoration project car, an old metal bodied one and restore all the body pannels, lots of tinkering with filler, primer, paint and polish etc someting pretty to look at the end of it and something to sell on so that you can buy a bike again come spring.
You can pop out and do an hour or so when ever you fancy and just down tools when ever your bored. WINNER!

When I moved into my house there was a little shed in the garden with a latch bolt on both the inside and the outside. Why would you want to lock yourself in? Why would you want to lock someone in? The previous owner has some specialist interests involving rubber pants. Go figure.....
Anyway, what I mean is you could put a lock on the inside :p

He's thinking outside the box now...
Trouble is all those things need going somewhere to do them really. Especially the kite surfing, I have a friedn who does that it it seems a big travel and time thing. It also requires some perseverence.
Gliding or flying is a possibility, but its the learning bit puts me off.
Fishing and a project is currently up there.

A kite?;)
Kitesurfing is awesome but massive amounts of faff involved, if the wind is in the wrong direction you'll have to traverse the country to find somewhere to go, or live on an island;) - The kit needs cleaning after you use it or it'll rot, normally when it's cold and dark after you've spent every ounce of strength you had spending "just another tack" on the water
But it's still worth every minute:cool:

Can't believe no one has said it - learn a musical instrument (unless you alreadly play!) then go jamming at all the local pub jam sessions!! :D
Have you tried flying model aeroplanes. Uses the internal combustion engine, lots of fettling, Very little personal risk. There are clubs that dogfight, the planes have long ribbon like streamers and the idea is to cut you opponents with your prop.
and the idea is to cut you opponents with your prop.
sounds like Rugby... :smt075

Jigsaws?
Model trainset?
Circus skills - juggling, tightrope walking, plate spinning ,aerobatics fire performance skills, poi, devil sticks, unicycle etc etc etc
no studying just got out a enjoy it as and when you can.
train indoors then take it outside and wow everyone with your unusual skills
Kite flying/making
dancing - all different kinds
theatre performance skills
look at leisure classes at local college - I'm doing millinery at mine
Golf?
I suppose it depends on your age, relative fitness etc. I have a form of arthritis which means my rugby playing days ended when I was 24, which scarily enough is over 20 years ago now that I think back!
Golf's great for me, although I'd imagine any "serious" player would recoil in horror from the sight of my swing (the arthritis has to be accomodated in the swing :)). Nice walk around a course too, and if you really get into it, you can save up and go play some of the great courses around the country - I'd not try the Brabazon course at the Belfry for a while though :D

Airsofting??
Always a good group of people and a fun day out, and the only limiting factor is if you dont fancy going out in the rain.
Can be abit pricy to get started though.

. no point being a hairdresser - that needs time to study - all these things you can pick up when you fancy - self taught or go to clubs and be social

make models, either ones you just look at and enjoy or ones that you can drive or fly like model cars with real petrol engines by Tamia or helicopters / planes.
No too much faff before and after, bit of tinkering when you fancy it.
What do i win?
Wood carving! :D
Just collecting driftwood and shaping it however it pleases you.

pmsl.
some of those petrol cars are very fast you know and take a lot of skill to control and set up right.
How about attention whoring on internet forums? (fora?) . That'll keep you off the streets.
Stop being so weak and do a physical activity. How about Mountain biking?
Doesn't take too much planning.
Can do it not far from where you live.
Get to spend money on shiny carbon bits & bobs just like farkling your ADV bikes.
Get to spend a bit of time fettling the thing.
Useful skills cross over for when you man up and get back on a motorbike.
Yep. That's the answer.
GO MAC! donīt hold back there ;)

I am getting a mountain bike, but that's not going to satisfy a man of my needs. And I'll no doubt get ****ed off with that.
