The kitchen tap now needs quite a bit of effort to make sure it's tighten enough so not to drip.

Do I need a new tap or new rubber washers? It's a mixer tap btw. If new is needed and since this was bought cheaply from B&Q could someone suggest a decent place to get one from?

Thanks

I'm sure someone who knows better than me will come along in a mo but from what i know ( i used to sell bathrooms and kitchens) mixers taps can either be rubber washers or ceramic disc inside.

Can you post a pic of the tap itself, that may help. And anything you know of the brand of it too.

it has rubber washers as I have changed them previously cause it was making a knocking noise like excessive pressure as one of them was not sat properly

no pic as I'm at work :)

If it is a rubber washer, then you can get a cheap set from B & Q with various sizes in.

Or post a pic :p

if you have had to replace them once best bet is to replace the tap, bristan make bloody good taps, make sure you get ceramic inners as they last longer and can cope with the higher pressures from combi boilers & direct fed mains water.

This sounds like something from Rogue Traders.

'I'd say your gonna need a whole new sink unfortunately, with new pipework. Will be back in a couple of days as I will have to wait for parts.'

eh?
Sorry that was a two part post, quoting Rogue Traders (TV Programme), then, recommending Dirtydog. Not throwing him into the hat of Rogue Traders. Hence the split in paragraphs ;)

Although, I didn't see your post as I went off to do something after I hit reply, so didn't see your reply, which is right.

Bloody hell Plowsie what you saying about me? ;)

Right it's most likely you could get away with new washer in it, how long ago did you replace the washer?

Hi you could go to your local plumbers merchants and get a tap revival kit for your kitchen sink taps sounds like you'll need the 3/4" kit, this replaces the whole valve & washer per side. Hope this helps you out. ;)

Why do that when you could just replace the washer for about 5p?

The washer not lasting long can indicate that the seat is a bit rough and needs re-cutting.

Fair comment Dirty Dog,
I usually ask my customers which they prefer if the said mixer tap is very old and the valve's are stiff & hard to turn a new kit could be better by the time you've stripped both valves down & seviced them, the B&Q brass ware is cheap inc the valves do you agree?

tbh I think it's because the tap was the cheapest one in B&Q :)

Tbh replacing the washer or the whole valve is cheaper for the customer in the long run why replace the whole tap mixer.

I've only ever re-seated 1 tap, it does work sometimes but not always.

True enough, I normally just say they need a new tap ;). Not many people will bother with the new heads as most of the time they prefer to have a new tap anyway.

Ah you see it's true that you get what you pay for! At the moment I've got a £40 set of taps in my kitchen as that was all my landlord would pay for . But you could easily spend a lot of money on taps. If you want good quality taps you're looking at around £100 for them. Or if you want to spend lots on your taps have a look at Crosswater stuff (spiderman will back me up on that one)

I think you are barking mad if you were implying that I invest in a Crosswater tap :)))

Screwfix aren't too bad with their range of taps, might be worth a look?

Edit: Just looked in my Crosswater catalogue cheapest kitchen tap they do is £95 and the dearest is £899!!!!!!
