View Full Version : Should I Report Them?

Last week, I noticed some kid riding around the estate near my house on this tiny little bike. Sorry I dont know what it is, but seems to be a tiny tiny crosser/trials bike. and i mean tiny, like a miniature bike. (all i can say is its a 2-stroke because it smells nice)
This bike seems to have multiplied into 3 miniature tiny bikes, and basically, 3 kids are now riding around the roads near my house IN THE DARK with no headlights, no brake lights, no number plates, no helmets, no protective clothing, riding up one way roads, overtaking traffic in really dangerous places, over pavements and walkways.
these are obviously not made for the road, the kids are all underage so no licence, and they have no consideration for anyone else on the road and are downright dangerous now. they seem to be getting braver and more dangerous everyday.
what should i do? should i just wait for one of them to fall off and smash his head open? or cause an accident (they obviously arent insured) or report it to the police? or just ignore it and hope its just a phase that'll go away once it gets icy.

Yes, please report them...

as funny as it would see for one of them to end in the ICU from being a ****, someone else could get hurt so report them is best.
in fact noone in my area likes bikes they report me if i wake them up on the way home from work, why hasnt anyone else in your neighborhood reported by now?
report them, a few months back I was in the doctor's waiting room sat next to a lad who had crashed one of those mini bikes and had busted has ankle up badly.
His mum was furious (I couldn't help overhearing) the jist of it was that this guy is facing a long and painful recovery, if he recovers well enought to walk properly again, because he was doing exactly the same thing that you've seen.

drive next to them and kick them off.
Nah i would report them too its people like that who can cause real damage to other innocent people i dont really give a toss about them i hope they crash and seriously hurt them self.
Definately report them before some one gets hurt, if they did have or cause an accident how would it make you feel knowing you perhaps could have prevented it.
Daryl.:D
For their, and everyone around them, safety I'd report them.
Unfortunately it appears that the current system means they'll have their bikes confiscated, and crushed.
Pity the local authorities can't take them in hand, work with them making sure they have the right safety eqpt, and a suitable area to do their off roading - happened for skateboarders.
Way of the world I guess

although Leeds police ignore this kind of thing as they cant chase them because it is unlikely they are wearing helmets.
Report them for sure!!!!!!!!!, why wait until they fall off & injure themselves, it would only be a waste of cash the NHS can hardly afford.

Report them Gracie and get some video if you can as well. .Walk into your police station and show it to them. It's difficult as they can't chase, but where I lived a few years back, the cops just sat in unmarked cars on the road, watched, waited for them to get off and BAM...they were had!

Yes phone up the cop shop and speak to your community liason officer (if you have one) they're a bit more helpful than the normal officers, as its their job to sort out stuff like this.

I absolutely agree with you Bri w............my boy pays a lot of money to go to a purpose off roading track with his bike, because he is a good boy and values his car licence.
But.......Ive been thinking about this alot - when I was a little girl the the boys used to build carts out of old prams with a bit of string to steer - IIRC they got up to some pretty high speeds and were always crashing them. Its in boys' nature to do these adventurous things. Unfortunately today - because these little bikes seem to be so readily available they will be the choice for adventurous kicks.
Although I agree there are always a few bad apples but when is society going to stop demonising young lads and come back to some good old common sense?
Just the way I feel about it :?
PS Gracie I don't have an answer for you sorry...

Its silly their is a big piece of abandoned land near the Trafford centre called cardycaff .. its just beside the flyover ... and over the years all the dirt bikes and quads that go on their have engraved a really good track ... its massive with some good jumps ect ect .... but every Sunday you get the police waiting with recovery trucks taking away the quads and bikes from people ... at least these people have the decency to find some where off road Why don’t they just turn the land into a track and charge a small amount per person ?? im pretty sure its owned by the council.
If the kids had somewhere to take there bikes it would solved!! And we wouldn’t have this problem.

Carts, skateboards, bicycles and roller skates dont need insurance and road tax. Certain
mechanically/electrical propelled vehicles on the road do,motorbikes being one of them so it surprises me that some of the elder generation are allowed to drive electric mobility vehicles along roads and pavements without the same
I have no problems with kids riding low cc bikes on the road as long as they are taxed and insured with the same safety standards as normal vehicles
On the continent kids ride 50cc pedal mopeds from a very early age, possibly about 12 but they do have at least insurance

When I was a brat, we had a huge big area that we used to take our MX bikes on, the local cops didn't mind and everyone was happy.
Now it's built over and the area is full of kids on pit bikes, some of these are pretty quick and it's a matter of time before one goes under a car.:|
I'd report them, but it's the lesser of 2 evils.:D

that be a good idea Bri - now where's my funding forms?
Why don’t they just turn the land into a track and charge a small amount per person ?? im pretty sure its owned by the council.
because Local authorities can't afford the insurance for running a track like this. Sounds stupid i know but all our locally owned tracks are ran by individual groups - easier to get funding, cheaper insurance and the staff that are willing to fund it. the hardest part is getting the group organised and willing for the adults to get involved and scro checked

Someone reported my nephew for riding his field bike on the field accross the road from his house.
Cops turn up and threaten to seize his bike, despite him saying he is allowed to ride there. Who gave you permission? My dad.
They laugh, So who is your dad. The bloke who owns the land you are trespassing on.
He thought he had them.
So after he finishes, he opens the gate to ride over to his house. Can we see your licence, tax, insurance etc. before you bring that onto the highway.
So now he rides the long way round so he doesn't need to cross the road. Which really pee's off the neighbour who complained about the noise of kids on their bikes.
its been suggested for years and years and nothing ever happens
as above its ahrd for local authroities to get the end product of the track and that is a big stuumbling block - but we have a great push on interventions like that at the moment so we may just be able to get the foundations started. we need tie in with neighbouring authroities and groups. and all at a time wihen we have £6mil savings to find.
thats won't stop me - there are a few police forces doing something will need to look back thro the paperwork.

Hi all, first post but thought I'd weigh in with something I saw on road wars.
There were 2 kids on a scooter teararsing around an estate and the cops couldn't chase because they were putting the kids in danger as they didn't have the correct safety gear..... It seems the police are unable to do anything unless they catch them when they stop :?. But that said I'd deffo report them as you might save someone some injury.
Oh and hi and I will be getting an SV very soon :thumright:

I realise it was a joke - but sometimes people do actually get really annoyed and try these things without realising the consequences. So I just made sure the consequences now appear next to the suggestion, for anyone reading this thread.

In response to the original post - Yes. Not for the good of the kids riding the bikes (someone mentioned Darwin) more for the fact that if they cause someone to have an accident, who is that person supposed to claim off?!
Got a bit of sympathy for these kids. The days where you could find a bit of scrubland and break limbs without bothering anyone seem to be gone.
Back in the dark ages I can remember parents throwing up assualt course adventure playground type things on wasteland to keep the kids entertained over the summer holidays.
Doubt in this climate of " Risk aversion, No such thing as an accident" culture that could happen now.
Think we live in the worst enviroment for fun police (By which I don't mean the actual police police) there is - no wonder our Kids are supposed to be the most miserable in europe.

Just as an addendum to my original post...I was watching helicopter heros this morning while doing the ironing (yep, I actually did some) and there was a very poignant story on there.
An 18 year old lad that HAD gone through his CBT and WAS on the road legally was riding around on his scooter as we see so many youngsters riding around, not paying proper attention, all over the road, weaving in and out of traffic etc. He overtook cars that he thought were going too slowly but had failed to notice that car 1 had it's right indicator on and he slammed right into the side of her because in his own words, "I wasn't even looking in front of me, I was chatting to my mate that was riding alongside". He was 18 and is now paralysed below the waist as he came off the scooter and hit a brick wall......this was doing 20mph!
Now, these kids on minimotos or whatever they are really are putting themselves in great danger. They are unlikely to injure anyone in another vehicle, but couldn injure pedestrians. They could cause damage to third party vehicles or property....but they could kill or seriously harm themselves. Not long after Stretchie and I moved to where we are now, one of the young moped lads there was killed because he didn't even look right when he was pulling out into a main road.
Report them, but speak to someone about your concerns and why not back it up with a letter or petition to your local councillor. As much as I abhore these kids running riot on our roads, I also understand that they very often have nothing better to do and no better a place to do it.

but my point is that they arent riding over some land near my house. they are riding on the road in the dark with no lights etc overtaking traffic at about 30 on roads that narrow and uneven and have many obsitcles that require cars to pull in and out of all the time - i dont know how they havent been hit by a car pulling out on them already
thats cheryl - im gonna try and get some video evidence of them when i next hear them coming and i'll definately report them to the police

I completely agree with your sentiment, I used to be able to ride my bike wherever I wanted when I was a kid......I wouldn't let my kids do it though...it's a different world now. There is such a greater number of vehicles on the road and uninsured vehicles at that that I feel we need to think of other ways to give kids that release and fun they need. At the moment, local authorities will build a skate park and think they're job is done.......it isn't. More needs to be done to give kids something to do.

Natural selection at work.
Same with little idiots on their mini dirt bikes, let one of them go under a vehicle and that might (just) teach their mates the error of their ways. The Playstation generation have no appreciation of the risks involved and are to stupid to realise you cannot press 'RESET' in real life.
You also have question what the parents think their little angels are up to on these bikes...

Call you local cop shop, speak to community liaison officer if they have one and DONT give them your name or address and tell them you dont want to be involved in any way.
last thing you need or want is the kids getting their bikes confiscated for whatever reason by the cops and them coming to take it out on you / your house/car/bike/gerbil whatever.

Mike is right, it's when nasty accidents happen that these kids learn the very real dangers of what they are doing. Unfortunately, thta is at the cost of potentially someones life. Yes you could call it natural selection, but these kids are very often the product of bad parenting so as much as they annoy me, their parents annoy me more.
One of our neighbours kids have a scrambler and they ride it up and down from time to time if they've been working on it, but they are farmers, they don't ride it in the roads, they are sensible and incredibly responsible lads, so don't bother us at all....in fact, Dan and I are usually taking the mic because being 6ft on a little thing like that looks hilarious.
If it's possible, police can seize and destroy the vehicles, but maybe they should also fine the parents to cover the costs.???

Personal experience: Cop too scared to arrest 3 crims until backup arrives says to them, right in front of me..."if it was up to me lads i;d let you go right now but that fella there insists you be arrested" I hadn't insisted on any such thing, just confirmed to the cops that they didnt live in the house they had just smashed the front door into pieces to get into.
CID wanted me to make a formal complaint against the cop so the case could carry on against the 3 cos there was a lot of stuff CID wanted them for and they were furious this stupid cop had blown the case by messing up the arrest procedure too.

In fat, our longest "street run" trip went from Dartford to Gravesend, through housing estates and such, which ended up being about 6 miles.

i have a mini moto a yellow one the same as in your pic but i wouldnt ride it down the street whats the point its not worth the risk of losing your licence.
No tax insurance and what ever else they do you for.

It was a cheap import, but it was before the phase of everyone clamping down on them.
Gave it away probably 5 odd years ago now. Epic fun on that thing though with friends, esp riding through posh estates with toffs coming out to complain
Poor little yellow one lost its fairings 2 weeks after getting it (2nd run after running it in) and highsiding the little bugger... One friend went over the bike, the other went over my head
We wore bash hats when racing after that  Ahhhh memories.
Anyway, if they annoy you that much, just walk outside with a plank of wood under your arm, and when they come past, just "happen" to turn your body to walk accross the road and watch them ride into the plank...... Old man done that once, but without the plank, and replaced with flat handed open arm... Kid got it smack bang in his mush  (but these kids were riding as close as possible to people walking down the road so deserved it moreso).
