View Full Version : Off the lights.
When I first got my SV after 18months on a GN125, I thought it was an absolute rocket, and heavy and massive ... I used to struggle to get it to turn ..... 4 months later, it feels nothing like this anymore .... love it !!
BUT....
I'm (day to day commuting) using a maximum (in general) of about 6,000 revs ... and ticking it along at about 3500 revs ..... and especially off the lights (not that I'm bothered) getting left for dead by other bikers ... so questions ...
1. Are others just on faster bikers ??
2. Are others just ridding their bikes harder ??
3. What sort of rev range you lot use day to day ??
Bear in mind ... I am commuting through the suburbs of London before calling me a nancy boy  ....
Was that you this morning with a black Caberg lid playing traffic light gp with me on the A4? :D
Twist the throttle more and faster. Change gear at 9,000. After this the power is dropping off anyway.
I tend to ride at 7k on a commute and up to 14k on a blast.
No, not me .....
I've had some great rides home recently though....... normally 2 other bikers join me, and we ride quickly, but considerately with each other from the A3 Tolworth, down the Ewell bypass ...
Thats until you get some knob on a scooter/125 cutting between us, and racing off in his white trainers and jeans ..... everytime heading in to Epsom ..... :smt027
Scoobs .... not in the slightest bit worried, and have red-lined it ... maybe I'm just more relaxed than those other bikers .....or more mechanically sympathetic ....
racing off on a 125??? YEAH U MUST BE RIDING SLOW LOL......in general riding i up change before 4-5000 rpm in every gear...but its like anything if u wanna get somehwere fast try 7-9000rpm;)

Bore that in mind..... Nancy Boy!!!!
I'm a newbie, so you might get better advice from the serious bikers, but if you feel the urge to get away from the lights faster you need to keep the revs up and the front wheel down.
So, once you're feet are on the pegs keep your weight over the tank and pin the throttle 'til you hit 9000rpm, then quick-shift into second and pin the throttle again. Change up into third and lift off because you'll be hitting the national speed limit pretty soon.
Remember, in the dry your SV can manage 0-60 in less than 5 seconds if you ask nicely.

^^ the sv can do 0-60 in under 4seconds (suzuki say 3.75 (tested))
i ride prety flat out change at 9500rpm that if i can catch it befor it get to red line but thats when acelorating lol, cruze about 5000rpm change up after that if im doing a continus speed like on mway
PS i went from a 50cc moped to a mt-03 660cc (heavier than the sv)

Well that's optional

nancy boy, but on serious note, just push it a bit harder the bike can handle it, it's an SV

Not on the R1 it ain't. :)
I think I just love riding my bike so much, the longer it takes the better !!! lol.

Dont ever race an sv over hammersmith flyover do you ...keep meeting an r1 most morrnings there.

For the final time  I don't want to go faster ..... I can do that .... but choose not to on my daily commute ....
I just wanted to get a feel for how hard people ride day in day out .... or whether these quicker bikes, are just quicker bikes ....
Personally, I think most of it is attitude ..... all the topboxers ride like me .... all the non-topboxers race away like its the Isle of Mann week

I sometimes go fast off the lights (but only up to the speed limit) :plod: but yeah, after years driving my car which redlines at 5,000rpm, having 14,000rpms to play with is very weird. And at about 10,000rpm (which is about 70mph in second gear) the vibrations are... interesting. :smt081

I recently did my bike plus, and one thing I was constantly told by my instructor was that I need to be higher in the rev range when riding. He said around 6-7k, then the powers there if and when I need it.

My current ride won't even rev that high :(

I found the other day that to get away from lights you are best getting the revs upto about 6-7K rpm and slipping the clutch while giving it throttle. Its smooth and get you going very quick. I didnt even mean to do it when I did it as I normally kinda drive off of about 2.3-3K rpm when making a quick start.
Hope that helps :D

Agreed ..... I've never been in to high rev'ing .... I bought a Turbo charged TT, and a 3.2 V6 Audi ..... rather than the high rev'ing alternatives .... Torque rules !!!
Again, coming from the 125, the SV felt silky smooth at first ...... doesn't feel like that anymore ....... but now, riding up to 6,000 revs seems to give you the best combination of power, smoothness, and relaxed ride ......
ps. Glad to see you are back on 2 wheels, mate .....

Yeah, the SV felt much more powerful than the CB500, and the sound when you gave it a handful was wonderful. But you don't know smooth until you've ridden a 4-potter.

Cheers! Slowly rebuilding the old confidence, and my wrists are enjoying the Fazer riding position. Had a great time yesterday on the way to work properly throwing it into the bends.

1.) I'd like to see this demonstrated before I try it myself :p(not doubting you like, just have an expensive helmet)
2) how did you manage to do it by accident?! Surely you can hear when the falco is ticking over at 5k!

LOL, well I was actually out with Paul (the 6th) and was just saying by, he rev'd his bike (as you know he has stock cans) and I did mine (not very stock :p), then just before the rev's dropped I pulled off, I put the throttle back on a little (as I would from tick over to bring the rev's up) which held the revs at 6k rpm and set off doing the same movements as usual (slipping clutch and all that) but it set off very smooth and quickly. :D
So there you go, a slightly interesting insight I guess :D

Dont think there are any bikes on the road that rev that high. The R6 pretends to but doesn't really go above 15.5K. ha ha :)

Aye that would be the one, hits the limiter at 18k.

3500 rpm is a little low. Try to keep the engine spinning above 4000 rpm; I tend to keep it more around 4500-5000 unless its slow riding (sometimes its more controllable on the throttle to be in 2nd gear at 3000 rpm then in 1st at 4000 rpm for the same speed). Consider that in 6th gear at 70 mph, the revs ar about 5500 rpm; suzuki would have sort of intended this to be the case, so I take it as the revs to be sitting around. The engine remains nice and responsive here (you pretty much ride a nice wodge of torque)
I shift up around 6500 rpm, rarely use the upper enchelons of the rev range (but then I am in london). Out on country roads I'll happily go up to 8000 rpm, but still rarely actually do.

On SV it's easy, get right over the front wheel, rev it up to about 7k, drop the clutch as fast as you dare while keeping the revs up and opening the throttle to full, use the clutch slip to keep the front down. When it's at about 9k shift up.
But, you're still stuffed by most other bikes past about 40mph, less if the other guy knows what he's doing.

Nice one ...... thats what I was looking for ....thats where I am.....
I hear and see other bikers screaming up and down the road :smt119....... but the SV does seem like that sort of bike to me
Turns out the SV isn't as sporty as I thought it was going to be..... and that suits me just fine (with my Topbox) :p

However not really what you wanna be doing round town.

stick a loud exhast on it, they realy do make you want to hear the bike scream because it sounds soooo nice
You think you have problems
Try being 33bhp... :( best i can do is beat people off the line, get to about 7k rpm and every ones gone :(

33bhp can hold its own in traffic.
You can stay with the big boys till about 60 odd.

It's not the fastest thing away from the lights, but as a fellow commuter I find that the lightness makes up for it, it's nice and flickable through the gridlocks of Central London!
