As I said in the for sale thread for the SV (splitting it) I got a '98 CBR900RR - it's awesome, but, a few things:

There's a funny knock at idle in neutral when I let go of the clutch - doesn't sound too bad and I'm not particularly worried because I think the SV did that too but any ideas?
3rd cylinder doesn't run very well at idle - carbs need a clean?
Will be checking valves too hopefully this weekend before I start approaching the redline so there's that to do if anyone has any pointers and,
it doesn't have a reserve fuel light! Anyone know the deal with that?

Cheers!
Conrad

I wouldn't worry too much about the knock it just sounds like a bit of backlash as the gearbox input shaft spins up.

Balance the carbs, if that won't cure it clean them.

Cheers dude. Much obliged, got a haynes manual and going to check the valves soon, it's not going to be too much fun to do I think, need to back the CCT out, need to fabricate a honda CCT locker (haynes has a lovely diagram): fun times! Are there any sort of noises that would indicate the valves are out? They need doing anyway but I don't want to blow it up in the meantime.

Cheers

Headers glowing, rattling, preignition, carbs that won't balance, spitting back through carbs. Allsorts if they're miles out, but those are not a bad motor.

You do not need to lock CCT to check valves, just airbox, tank off etc and remove cam cover

Take it easy won't you mate. Getting a Blade seems a strange cure for a lack of confidence in an SV but I agree they are awesome bikes. Unfortunately I never got on with the 16" front and ended up writing it off at the Nurburgring.

Could check that HT lead.

As stu says, HT lead and also the plugs, had a customer / friend of the shop i work at bring his blade in (think its about same age as yours), kept losing power then kicking in, he was prepared to fork out on having what ever needed doing, replaced plugs and it was fine

Cheers guys- bit of a creeping idle atm and leaking a touch of fuel from the tap but it's missing the o-ring in there and they're £30 on ebay if that doesn't fix it. Creeping idle I'm guessing is carbs again, stuck idle maybe on a cylinder.

Is it vacuum tap? This could be leaking fuel into, or vacuum out of that manifold.

May well be, will have to give it a look when I have a chance next.
