Photography Advice - Night Time

Me and maria went up to alexandra palace last night and I dabbled with some night-time shots. However, the street lamps ment everything came out looking really orange, and I had a problem with light polution too. How can I overcome these problems?

You could try setting a custom white balance. Sam got a free "neutral gray" test card with a magazine, and it made a difference when shooting in sports halls. Depending on the camera you should be able to set a white balance while your out and about, or you can take a shot of the card using the settings at the time and then use that shot to colour correct your shots when you get home...

Yea thats a good idea, I didn't have anything to set the white balance with last night...I guess I should get a peice of white card to carry about :D

If you can, change the white balance. Another way to help is to shoot in RAW. You can then adjust the colours much more accurately on the computer.

Custom White balance is something I make frequent use of when the light is a long way from "white". The other thing you can do is pick your subject out using flash. The camera should automatically set the white balance for the flash if it's on auto, the background retains it's orange colour.

Some lights are just way too orange to easily correct for. Remember to set your WB back to auto when you're done shooting in any area, as otherwise you end up with some very odd looking photos at your next location.
