View Full Version : help buying an xbox

CoolGirl

I know you lot like your video games, so you might be able to give me some advice on buying an Xbox for a medium-sized child of my acquaintance for christmas.

A couple of questions:

1. what models are there (an internet search threw up too many to choose from), and which are the best?
2. Best place to buy from?
3. will he be guaranteed to retreat into his bedroom and not emerge for the next 4 years other than to eat, wash and go to school?

(helpful answers only please - I'm not trawling through who likes what game, showing off high scores etc)

thanks

1. premium - for price
2. any big retailer like pc world, play.com used to be the cheapest but pc world offer £1 a month insurance for any accident
3. yes

get a PS3 slim

Good point - we're only looking at xboxes as he's got a PS3 at his dad's and:
- he'll be able to have different games on his xbox to his PS3
- games won't disappear to his dad's house and not come back

As Wideboy said Premium model is the one to go for, unless you can find an extremely good deal on the Elite model (more storage capacity). Ignore the Arcade version (no hard disk).

Game are quite good at the moment as you can pay £20 for two years cover against any sort of defect or issue ie RROD oir E73/E74 error

ask for the latest model they've got in stock to give yourself the full three years rrod cover microsoft's warranty run's by mfr date not purchase date as i found out.i'd go for the premium for the harddrive.

Swin
01-11-09, 03:14 PM
Arcade doesn't have a hard drive, but is cheap
Premium has a hard drive, but you don't get a wireless network connector
Elite also has a hard drive (I think it's larger than the premium but not sure) and has a wireless network connector. Oh, and it's black.

[edit]
At the time we bought our one, Argos was doing the best deal as we got a second controller and a couple of games for the same price that Curry's etc were selling it for.

That covers any Xbox360 regardless of purchase or manufacture date, for 3 years. When they announced this extension (specifically for rrod as you say) they actually refunded any moneys that had previously been paid by owners for repair work.

As your in london have a look at the pc world in fulham.
They are "re-opening" it and doing xbox premium and a free game or two for just over the £100 mark if i read the paper correctly.

I buy consoles from HMV, purely for the lack of grief if/when they have an issue, 2*xbox360's[0] & 2*PS2's replaced without question or problems, even when one of them was a console not bought from HMV and just failed because of something else bought from them[1].

Druid

[0] We were early adopters, had 3 swapped now... Newer ones are more reliable!
[1] PS2 rumble died due to a multi-tap bought from HMV, HMV refunded us for the multi-tap and swapped the (out of warranty and bought elsewhere) PS2.

Extended warranty only applies for RRoD and E74 errors. PS3 stil has the Yellow light of death ad no extender warranty. Bet thing to do is to look around for a deal on last week they had the xbox premium on offer up here for 100 quid.

No it doesn`t , you have to buy the wireless adaptor seperately for ALL 360`s

if he is going to play online then get the 360.
I have both and the PS3 network is poor.
The whole xboxlive experience is far better i know you have to pay 40 quid a year but its well worth it imo.. ( and you carnt get gears of war or halo on the PS3)
The servers on the PS3 just Lagg out constantly.

I seen an eleite on play.com i think with 3 decent games for £199.99

LIES badger LIES, I got one with my Elite. The Elite comes with HDMI Cable already too, whereas the others don't IIRC.

I got my Elite for £250 with Tiger Woods 09 & Fight Night Round 4 and an extra controller from Currys.

My elite didnt come with a wireless adapter i had to buy mine seperatly, but that was ages ago. The only benefit with the elite is 120gb HDD and better HD as far as im aware, but my TV doesnt support HDMI so i just use the standard cable, oh and its a better colour (i think thats the main reason i bought it )

I just looked on Tesco website they dont appear to have any good package deals but my god, their games are cheap :D

Doesn`t matter what you say a STANDARD Elite package does NOT include the Wireless adaptor with it to enable a 360 to connect to a Wireless Router , it comes with an ethernet cable , a HDMI cable and a Wireless Pad and Black Headset . I have yet to even see one advertised with a free wireless adaptor . Maybe you had a special deal of some sorts but as a rule they do not come with one . I even double checked in case I had missed something , nothing from Play , Argos , Game or any of the usual suspects .

Any quad core cpu will be more than capable, it's the spec of your graphics card and how much ram you have that will determine performance.

yup because the 360 is pointles heap of cr*p that allways brakes and next year it will be out of date.... (note price starting to tumble fast) so i gave the more cost efective option more useful option that makes sence also have the ability to accomidate work(colage, high school) when he gets there, annnnndddd also you can upgrade one thing at a time that could cost as little as £20 to gain some perforamance increse

all i can see is win win win

ohh and the grafics are about 50% better

Not really better IMO there never as fun PC's...

1. Xbox see if you can find a premium, depends on if you want to spend the extra money on an elite really. The HDD is a necessity IMHO.
2. Internet, Or have a look around to see if any where has a deal on would be your best bet and dont forget Morrisons they're usually not to bad if they have a deal on
3. You wont see him if he has online ;)

IMO while a PC is undoubtably 'better', consoles "just work" and don't require ****ing about with settings, no worries about if your hardware is 'up' to it, games don't f**k up your machine in the name of anti-piracy and are less all round grief.

If you want to play games get a console, if you want the ultimate pretty graphics and high frame rates buy a PC but be prepared to pay for it, a very basic gaming PC will set you back twice what the xbox would cost. Hell a top end graphics card will set you back more than an xbox!

+1
A mid range GFX card will set you back more than an xbox360 lol .

And then if you want 1080 gaming on your pc your going have to spend another 200 quid on a decent 1920x1080 LCD monitor

Xbox just plugs into your BIG LCD/plasma Tv.

plowsie
03-11-09, 09:20 AM
Barwell, your stating a PC. However, that is going to be almost double, possibly even treble the price when we talk HD (if that's what Coolgirl wants), decent graphics card needed, HD Monitor, making sure the requirements are up to scratch, so may need to upgrade RAM etc.

And to a young child a console is more appealing than a PC, once he gets a little older, the appeal of a PC may be greater.

ah, gallant chaps defending my honour!

to be celar, we aren't on an unlimited budget here and my boy's only 13, not a 30 year-old geek. Besides, he can play with his friends if he has the same one as them (and we do have wifi so no problem there).

Yeah, but the game's boring. :p

Dam you angel, that's what i was gonna say, cause after you have finished beating off to the graphics, you'll think oh wait this game is boring, and the myth about k/b and mouse being better is not true, if someone like me who has used a pad all his life plays someone using a k/b and mouse it'll be ven cause i know how to use a pad.

metalangel
04-11-09, 05:16 PM
Heh, I say the same thing in those stupid console faceoffs they do on Eurogamer. Or more recently when they've compared Forza to Gran Turismo: When you're powersliding around a corner, trying to stay on the track, you opponent just ahead, two turns to go... you don't give a crap how many polygons are in his bumper.

Pad v mouse, meh. Played with a mouse for years, then pretty much jacked in PC games (too expensive keeping one up to date, patches a fuss, etc etc) and slowly learned to play FPSes on a pad. I only use my (ancient) PC for simulators and Transport Tycoon now.

barwel1992
04-11-09, 05:16 PM
^^ agreed both but the game can be fun just spaw with the nuke gun and have some fun ohh and unlimited ammo lol

and i totaly agree pads are better for racing but carnt stand them for first person shooter's.

any know if the ps3 is any good just for blue ray ? and maybe some games, any one else head about sony starting to charge for online soon ??

metalangel
04-11-09, 05:18 PM
It's a decent Bluray player, yes. And for games it's okay too, especially if you fit the extra plastic bits to your pad to make the L2 and R2 buttons proper triggers.

barwel1992
04-11-09, 05:20 PM
ohh right kwl just when i had a go on one the sound was a bit strange from the blue ray not sure if thats because its ment for 5.1 and was only through tv speakers

zsv650
04-11-09, 05:38 PM
you'll pay over £150 for just a decent blu ray player anyway so you may aswell plump the extra for the ps3 imo hopefully the videostore will come soon for rentals and purchase.

If you're playing an fps a good k/b mouse player will batter a good gamepad player every time. It is no myth. A gamepad cannot hope to compete with the speed of movement that a mouse affords you. This would apply for an fps however.

Thanks for all the replies. Just to let you know (and if anyone else is interested in buying one for their nerest and dearest), I follwed up some of your leads and the best offer was the Amazon one.

for the grand total of £199 you get

an elite console;
a game from quite a good choice;
another game from same offer of choices; and
a wireless Entertainment Pack - includes wireless Controller in Black and Two further Games - Pure and Lego Batman
however, the offer wasn't easy to find, so do use Bager's link.

£199 new machine

assume 4 new titles a year at least at £50 a time (thanks Modern Warfare 2 for the price hike to come) so £200 a year add another £50 for Download content.

£40 a year for xbox. He will want it to play with mates (rumours going up to £60 next year then £80 year after)

Now sales are slowing expect a new Xbox next year or teh year after new costs £250 i think.

So in 2-3 years you will end up spending:

£1,500 soon adds up doesnt it !!!!!!

Top end PC in same time with upgrades and games some where around the £1000 mark.

dont get me wrong xbox will be good for waht he wants and he will want the same as his mates. I just wanted to point out that £1 for £1 PC gaming is generally actually a bit cheaper in the long run.

Assuming that Coolgirl is going to buy all these upgrades and consoles for "an acquaintances" child, then you might have a point...

If it's a one-off pressie and CG is just going to lob the odd game at the nipper, then it's job done :D

All very interesting but totally hypothetical. I could just as easily say you'll spend £300+ per year on graphics cards alone, and that you'll struggle to build a truly top-end pc for £1000, even if you already have a top notch monitor.

You spend what you want to spend. I paid £160 for my 360 with 4 games, another £35 for Live. Since then I've bought half a dozen games at an average cost of £15 each. There are lots of titles that can be picked up cheap, and even Forza 3 (the only new release I've bought) was "only" £35. I haven't bought a single thing from the Marketplace either.

It need not be expensive. Live subscriptions can be had for little more than £5 when bought with a new game for £40 or so.

Get Xbox live subscriptions from ebay for around £22 not £40 from MS, get games from sites like zavvi thatare heavily discounted, don't buy half the crappy download stuff and you spend very little a year on xbox.

That`s the biggest pile of Horse manure about Xbox I have ever seen written , They are not raising the cost of Live , they don`t need to and it would shoot themselves in the foot . Secondly , you can trade games in nowadays to save on costs , and thirdly you are factoring in the cost of the 3rd gen Xbox into that ?????? That`s a long way off and is reported to not even happen until around 2012 for an actual release .

£1000 for a top end gaming PC , and the rest , wake up and get real , factor in the costs of games for that as well and added on hardware , then the fact that the graphics card probably doesn`t cut it and "Mummy can I have a printer please" etc etc etc . I`d love to live in your world where top end PC`s are so cheap , the games are free without troubles and content costs nothing , and ALL types of games are available on it .

I've had my Xbox for 3 months and never had the lust to play against others online. Play a load of geeks who spend hours on games all day to show that they can play one level right and all that. Yeah yeah, whatever.

Glad you got one for a decent-ish price Coolgirl :)

I`ve spent 5 years or so on Xbox live and it is like that with strangers , or you can play with mates , some who have been friends of mine since I was first ever on there and met them in real life ........ sound familiar ? A bit like this place you may say . Some people you can`t stand , some you tolerate and some become firm friends .

A lot of the time I will play Co-operative games and quite often , in fact a lot of the time , I am saving my buddies Bacon from getting gunned down . Other times we race , and like in real racing , it`s all about beating the track ............. and making sure you beat those that stand in your way . And it is not a load of Geeks , it`s normal people who play the game for a few weeks and then trade them in with the rest of us for new games . Those that spend hours upon hours on the same game for years get left behind on the consoles , it`s really only the PC games that have that kind of longevity with games like World of Warcraft .

Oh and half the time me and my mates don`t realise we are playing games cos we just natter sh1te to each other as we are playing .....a bit like Idle Banter , anything is up for conversation and sometimes you hear/see something hilarious . It`s worth it in my eyes , especially in Winter months like this .

Just thought I'd let you all know that the xbox was a huuuge hit - he hadn't taken it for granted that it was going to happen, even up until the last minute. We were on the bus the day before and he sighed, "Mum, it's going to take me aaaages to save up for one". I said that's what christmas and birthday money was for (I wasn't going to let on, was I?)

anyway, the look on his face when he opened it was priceless.:D

thanks for all the advice. Lego Batman is great - I want one of those ride-on BatCarpet-Cleaners
