View Full Version : Go away John Smeaton "OR AL SET ABOOT YE"

John Smeaton. Or SMEATO as he likes to be called now.
Ok, he did a brave thing on the day of the Glasgow Airport terrorist attacks. He wasn't the only one though, and IIRC the others did far more to stop the guys than Smeato. The only thing he is famous for is the quote:
"This is Glesga, we'll set aboot ye."
So, what exactly gives him the right to preach about stuff in a coloumn in the Scottish Sun? He preaches about politics, current affairs, what's right and what's wrong with world. Most of it is drivel because hasn't got a clue!!
Today, he is ranting on about comedians. Frankie Boyle, Jimmy Carr, David Mitchell. He is slating them saying that making "politically in-correct" jokes is out of order. What's brought this on? Because of David Mitchell saying on Radio 4 "there is no truth in the rumour that Anne Franks dad bought her a drumkit for her birthday"
He then starts ranting that it wasn't that when poor Anne met her death in the concentration camps.
Yeah, she died a horrible death. So did thousands of other people in that war and it is terrible part of the worlds history but COME ON! It was 60 ish years ago!
Anyway, who the hell are you, Mr Smeaton, to tell me what I can and can't find funny?
Seriously dude, you are famous for making people from Glasgow sound like eejits!!!
EDIT: PS, I read the broadsheets too, not just tabloids!
In his defense, I think he just gets his picture pasted to the top of the column, I doubt he even knows what's being printed... Not sure if that comment improves his case any...

MBK, you really should send that to him as an email and see what he has to say for himself.
isnt there a great deal of doubt over his role in stopping the attack on glasgow airport? he only got involved after 3 others had waded in and he merely pulled an injured person out of the way of the burning vehicle?

Much as I agree with your other comments and I do understand your point of view. You being an 80's child this may seem an eternity ago to you but there are those of us who had to grow up with the immediate aftermath of WW11 and the war widow aunts and relations. The hardship, poverty, lack of housing and food rationing up till 1954 may all be history to you but a part of life for me. 60 years is a long time when you are young but please remember that this 60 years of relevant peace is due to the people who gave their lives so that you could have the life you have today.
This although a reply to your post is NOT directed at you, but just a reminder to us all and I seriously hope than the younger generation can look back on their 60 years and not have the heartbreak and deprivation that a WW can bring.

Oh God yes, I understand. I do feel you have misquoted me a bit though. I did say that it was a terrible time in the worlds history and I studied them before and I am fully aware of the artrocities which occurred in that time.
My point is that this joke has been going around for decades. I have heard it loads of times. I don't really think it can be classed as being particularly offensive though. He also goes on about the Jimmy Carr joke about the soldiers and the paralympics. This was discussed to death before and I think the majority of us agreed that we took it in the way that it was meant.

No need to apologise, I appreciate what you are getting at in your post. I full agree that sometimes we need to be reminded about our history.
TBH, many people my age don't know anything about the WW's and probably don't care. I think many families made a huge sacrifice and many lost sons as a result. I think people also need to be reminded about the Blitz and that this era of terrorism is not unique. Britain has always faced very dangerous enemies.

Thanks MBK, for making me feel like a really old bugger for the first time in my life...
I was about to retort with something along the lines off, "Well in my school, we learned all about both WWs", then I realised that was some time ago...
Damn you Old Father Time, damn you!!!

was going to comment, but it has allready been said, only realised that as i scrolled to the bottom of the thread, but, that comment is the same as the ****ing on the war memorial, it was 60 years ago so who cares, well as we have found out plenty do. 60 600 6000 matters not a jot, it is common decency and respect, expected more from you mbk.
Have to say that when it comes to comedy, for me, anything goes. Especially with the comedians mentioned who are well known for being close to the bone. If you don't like it change the channel.

For me at least, the difference between this and the "taking a p*** on a war memorial" issue, is that there is no chioces involved. His actions were put upon the public, publicly...if that makes any sense. People can choose which commedians to listen to, and on the whole they know what to expect. Freedom of speach n' all that jazz.

Woah! Steady on!!!
Think you should go back and read your comments about the soldiers who have lost limbs.
If you can laugh at that then I am sorry but you cannot judge me on this!!!!!
And how dare you say that I am doing the same as the idiot who urinated on the war memorial!
PS - I think you should read the rest of my posts in this thread before you speak to me like that!

i think with comedians, it doesn't matter, they will say things thatare harsh but it is always said in a light hearted manor and nothing malicious so people need to get off their backs. all this pc **** is ruining mock the week dam it.

Touche!
There is an arguement that not execising our freedom of speach is to devalue that which all those people died for...back me up someone!

mbk, you can not stick up for veterans, or the people who gave their lifes in conflict's one sentance, and in the next say quote, Yeah, she died a horrible death. So did thousands of other people in that war and it is terrible part of the worlds history but COME ON! It was 60 ish years, ago!
It's just not cricket.
And you won't thank me for this but, how would you feel if in 60ish years some one said about a member of your family that had passed away 60ish years ago, quote, but COME ON! It was 60 ish years, ago!

i think the point MBK was trying to get across was that comedians say other jokes about war and situations and less of a fuss is kicked up but as soon as you mention someone remotely famous from the war including hitler it gets out of hand with how "PC" it has to be.
Milky Bar Kid

I think if you read my posts properly you would see that I was meaning that this joke is decades old and has been told countless times by countless comedians.
People make jokes about the Twin Towers. People make jokes about the soldiers that are being injured as we speak and people don't seem to get anywhere near as offended, but yet, a joke about something which happened 60 odd years ago is turned into the most heinous thing to say EVER in the history of man!
Anyway, this is derailing my thread and I would appreciate it if you didn't.

EXACTLY my point. At least someone reads these things properly without slandering the OP and likening them to some yob urinating on a war memorial.

I was not commenting on the joke, i have no problem with jokes if they are jokes, it was only mbk's flippant comment that as it was 60ish years ago it was past forget it, get over it, i guess there is a differance between the people that provide that freedom with their lives, and those that live with the freedom provided by said others, but would not be willing to make the same sacrafice, but forget it it was ages ago.

Not what I was meaning at all. I was meaning, how can we joke about Twin Towers, Afganistan etc etc without SMEATO getting his knickers in a twist but the minute someone mentions Anne Frank, a victim of a war 60 years ago, he loses it and puts a big rant in the paper?

sure mbk agree with that, was only the one line i disliked, as an ex service man these things come back to haunt you, still peace and love, peace and love, more love though than peace though. :D

I was reading your post and thinking. No, these major past events shouldn't be forgotten, but then I couldn't help thinking how much better life would be in the west of Scotland and Ireland if people would forget about, and get over, war and battles that are now hundreds of years old...

hmm, I think, IMHO, that the N.I situation has now been diluted. I don't mean diluted a in its not as bad as it was, I mean diluted as in, the cause behind the fight has been diluted. It seems to have just become more of a reason to fight than anything else.
There was a very real cause bhind the original fighting in Ireland but now it has developed into a "catholic" vs "Protestant" thing. Just my opinion, if I am wrong, please, correct me!
In Glasgow at least it seems more of an inbred attitude, rather than any emotions built on an understanding of the facts and any real sense of loss or pain. The more modern problem in N.I., the yearly marches, and the "root" causes of the whole catholic/protestant problems go way back to 1688.
P.S. It's always been about Catholics VS Protestants... Another reason you've gota love religion.

Hmmm, I think if you look a bit deeper into it, there are other roots behind it, not just the catholic protestant things.
Anyway, this is derailing the thread.
yay derail!! *running away slowly*
i think he smeato should just can it - he has to do something controversial to get back in the papers and he has a cheek to say anything about it - yes it an old joke and its done the rounds with no one complaining as bitterly. As if he is all sweet and light - i think that Glasgow would be btter off without him he ain't no ambassador
as for saying it 60 ish year ago - today with one in 20 think AH was a football coach and auschwitz(sp) being a WWII theme park - it will soon disappear into a few memories.
MBK didn't say it flippantly it was used as a marker point. its the nuances of the forum that makes things misunderstood.
