Ubuntu (pronounced /uːˈbuːntuː/ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:IPA_for_English)),[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_%28operating_system%29#cite_note-1)[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_%28operating_system%29#cite_note-2) is a computer operating system (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operating_system) based on the Debian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debian) Linux distribution (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_distribution). It is named after the South African (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Africa) ethical ideology Ubuntu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_%28philosophy%29) ("humanity towards others")[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_%28operating_system%29#cite_note-3) and is distributed as free and open source software (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_and_open_source_software). Ubuntu provides an up-to-date, stable operating system for the average user, with a strong focus on usability (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usability) and ease of installation. Ubuntu has been selected by readers of desktoplinux.com as the most popular Linux (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux) distribution for the desktop, claiming approximately 30% of Linux desktop installations in both 2006 and 2007.[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_%28operating_system%29#cite_note-Market_Survey_2006-4)[6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_%28operating_system%29#cite_note-Market_Survey_2007-5)
Ubuntu is composed of multiple software packages of which the vast majority is distributed under a free software license (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_software_license) (also known as open source (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_source)). The main license used is the GNU General Public License (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_General_Public_License) (GNU GPL) which, along with the GNU Lesser General Public License (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Lesser_General_Public_License) (GNU LGPL), explicitly declare that users are free to run, copy, distribute, study, change, develop and improve the software. Ubuntu is sponsored by the UK based company Canonical Ltd. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canonical_Ltd.), owned by South African (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Africa) entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Shuttleworth). By keeping Ubuntu free and open source, Canonical is able to utilize the talents of community developers in Ubuntu's constituent components. Instead of selling Ubuntu for profit, Canonical creates revenue by selling technical support (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technical_support) and from creating several services tied to Ubuntu.
Canonical endorses and provides support for three additional Ubuntu-derived operating systems: Kubuntu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kubuntu), Edubuntu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edubuntu) and Ubuntu Server Edition. There are several other derivative operating systems including local language and hardware-specific versions.[7] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_%28operating_system%29#cite_note-ubuntu_derivatives-6)
Canonical releases new versions of Ubuntu every six months and supports Ubuntu for eighteen months by providing security fixes, patches to critical bugs and minor updates to programs. LTS (Long Term Support) versions, which are released every two years,[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_%28operating_system%29#cite_note-7) are supported for three years on the desktop and five years for servers.[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_%28operating_system%29#cite_note-8) The current version of Ubuntu, 9.10 (Karmic Koala (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karmic_Koala)), was released on October 29, 2009.

It does what Windows should be able to do, but can't because it is slowed up by Virus threats and thus Virus software. :compcrash:
Also it sticks a big finger up to Bill Gates and tells him that a teeny tiny percentage of the world don't like his company very much! :D
My system has all the functions a good Desk top should have and the added bonus of it being safer to use because there are very few, if any, virus out there that effect it. :smurfin:

Not really, I have it set to click and hold scrolly wheel on the desktop to move it with the mouse or scroll up/down to swap between virtual desktops. Or you can just select one of the virtual desktops from the bottom taskbar. Once you've got used to multiple virtual desktops (I have 6 at work, 2 on one monitor and 4 on the other) its hard to go back to only one.
There are other neat features such as any window you can chose if you want it for example to stay on top or stay on the active desktop so you could be watching a video and swapping between desktops and the video stays with you.
On the downside flash is sh*te on linux and crashes/maxes out my CPU on my home PC (my work PC being quad core doesn't suffer so much) but hopefully HTML5 will send that sh*tefest to the deepest hell where it belongs.

Swapping between desktops is useful - I use it on Linux at work and OSX at home.
Doing it as some ghey 3D cube thing is about as stupid as the old IRIX 3D filesystem where you fly around a la Jurassic Park.
