you should have agreed with them to have it taxed so you can ride it away. After all its illegal to ride on the road without paying the tax (says the guy who just got a fine thru the post for not having had tax on his bike for the last 3 months )
Call them tomorrow, tell them to get it taxed so you can come pick it up and ride it away.
In reality tho, you can of course ride it home without tax, wait for the relevant paperwork to come thru and then go tax it yourself. ;)

If it is a new bike the garage has to tax it when they register it to you.If you mean a used bike you will get part of the registration doc with it,and you can go to the Post Office with your insurance cert and MOT to buy the tax.

wont have the insurance on the same day as recieving the bike i can just pay the dealer cant i for tax and they can do it

yes you can pay the dealer and get them to do it but its far riskier riding the bike home with no tax and far more of a fine and points if you get caught than it is for tax too so i;d be more concerned about that myself tbh.

If its not insured you wont be able to tax it and nor will the dealer. And you shouldnt ride it uninsured.

Think he just said wont have the docs assume he is insured.
If not he runs risk of the bike being seized .... noone is that silly 8-[ as she thinks back to how many vehicles she has taken off people for no insurance

Providing you have insurance details and mot info you can do it on line.you may not have the tax disc but if you get stopped and receive a HO/RT/1 you will have all the appropriate dated documents in your possession before the last day[7] of the producer

The offence is failing to display the tax - still a £60 fine if you get a snotty copper - I mean an officer doing their job proper :)

right to get this straight, will be taking bike in on monday or fri, when im at garage i shall phone insurance to get them to change over, so will be insured on bike, bike doesnt need mot till april yet, but as the v5 wont be in my name i cant get the tax disc. so if i ask dealer to get tax for me this should be ok yeah? then i can ride home and post v5 bit off?
sorry for sounding like a newbie :D

Surely you'll have the V5C new keepers supplement from the dealer? Or potentially and VE103? Either of which should be more than acceptable for the post office to tax the bike
...when im at garage i shall phone insurance to get them to change over, so will be insured on bike ....
Assuming the insurance will swap over without any problems, thats not what you're asking about but it may influence the following
....so if i ask dealer to get tax for me this should be ok yeah?
No cause it wont be insured unless the dealer takes it on as owned by them (they rarely do) and not the shop, their own insurance is normally only there for the mechanics when they take bikes out on test runs etc. Chances are you will need to supply them with a cover note or tax it yourself when you pick it up. But do talk to them and see if they are willing to do it but would also talk to insurance company as well just in case

The garage will not tax it if it's used because they have to register themselves as an owner and insure it to tax it, so you should negoiate a lower price and get the insurance company to email you the certificate.

Failure to display is a £60 fine, however if you ride garage to home without stopping this will be hard to prove. If you have purchased online and print out the receipt at the end of the process then this will be enough to show said copper that you do have tax just that it is in the post. We have just had guidance to be lenient on tax discs as they are slow coming through the post due to strikes.
Do not ride without tax as you WILL lose the bike if caught and that will be pricey.

Mine did because I was in the same situation and bikesure emailed me the docs failing that get them to fax it to the dealer or wait to pick the bike up.

I picked my bike up with no tax.
The insurance company emailed me the certificate (as already mentioned).
The bike had an MOT and I had the keepers slip from the V5.
Thats all you will need.
I found out via the .Org that I could tax via the new keepers slip as I didnt realise I could do it that way.
Dead simple.

As you can get insurance sorted prior to the day, can I suggest when you get to the garage, ask them where the nearest post office is. Pop in quickly with the V5, MOT and your insurance cert, grab a tax disc, pop back to garage and bobs your uncle. You are on your way all legal and safe.

a bit off topic, but I never display tax on my bikes. Whenever I have in the past it has gone missing...hmmmm. anyway, I've never had any issues from old bill about it. They are taxed, I just keep the disk at home. If you were unfortunate enough to get some jobsworth who wanted to fine you, I guess you could always try the old - oh, it must have just fallen off, I'm sure it was there this morning...Might work...

Are you serious! You're the last person I would have thought would've been worried about that!
Maybe you need to change your user name! ;)

Against a jobs worth probably not :( but more chance of being believed if the bit that attaches to the bike is still there, all rusty like ;)
